Working with rhythms and placements, you'll learn how to make sure that the line, like body language, helps to really deliver the emotion you intend. This is another "can't miss" seminar -- it's bound to take your writing to the next level.
Pat Pattison is a Professor at Berklee College of Music, where he teaches Lyric Writing and Poetry.
In addition to his four books, Songwriting Without Boundaries, Writing Better Lyrics, The Essential Guide to Lyric Form and Structure, and The Essential Guide to Rhyming, Pat has developed three online lyric writing courses, one on poetry, and one on creative writing available through Berkleemusic.com. He has filmed a series of lectures and masterclasses, available through Songwork.com and has written over 50 articles for various magazines and blogs.
Pat continues to present songwriting clinics across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Several of his students have won Grammys, including John Mayer and Gillian Welch. - Hudba
I am a Artist myself and I read "Writing Better Lyrics" & "Songwriting without boundaries" and both these books where incredible , cover to cover. Packs a great amount of knowledge.
I just ordered the first a few days ago, been writing songs for decades, I've never taken a more intentional approach to studying lyrical aspects until now.
Nice name
You have an amazing ability to put in simple words the mesmerising realm of songwriting. Always loved your classes and learned so much from you. Thank you! Love you Pat!
This video done quite some time ago is still very valuable right now to every new writer discovering songs , I really really loved this information , something I will never forget and will always treasure , thank you where ever you are .🙏

This comedian sure knows a lot about songwriting
Underrated comment.
@@connorfitzgerald6990 Underrated comment about the underratedness of the comment...
(I was gonna say that / Agreed)
Certainly more than you.
@@toddgreenwood1458Hard to say. What great song has this guy written?
@@ledaswan5990
I don't really think it is about that. Meaning it's not about if he's written a hit song anymore than a music theory teacher having composed a sonata.
Just like with music theory, it helps to to understand what is already happening.
If you want to see sad watch the old Larry Dvoskin lecture at CUNY...CRINGE
Very useful tools indeed. I appreciate the chance to watch your seminar.
This guy is great. I saw him on cousera for Berklee's songwriting course.
Absolutely Incredible. My heart was thumping with each of the teaching concepts. I can’t wait to try some of these things out today!!!!
Ok the last 10 minutes were like... blew my mind... he said those same thing in the Coursera course, but I think here he showed better with this last example/improvisation =)
I believe the most important part of a song is the music, because my musician and singer can make a beautiful song no matter how mediocre my lyrics are.
thanks so much for all the tips! this video is gold!
Love this guy, he's incredible.
this has just opened a totally new world for me.! thank you for posting.
This is literally gold.
This was actually super incredible! Pat is a genius!

Exceptionally informative. Thank you.
Charming, intelligent, helpful and stable seminar.
This is very informative and I got a lot of out of his teachings. I'm new to this and I'm very glad that I chose to watch your video. I'll look for your books and watch any videos you have here on CZcams. Thank you Sir.
Loved this!
Thank you for uploading this videos. I recently purchased one of Pats books and the material is very useful for understanding the structure of poems.
I did Pat's songwriting course ran by Berklee on coursera. It was so helpful and I try to use it the best I can.
Amazing tools. Thank you!
Really enjoyable and informative! Thanks x
Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. I agree with the statement, " There are no rules."

Once ina while I come back to this video for a refresher. Deep wisdom here!!
I found this seminar to be very energetic and helpful ! Over the years in my life, I sometimes get distracted with other things < But when I feel it in the wind ,or the urge , spirit, inspiration etc .... I swim in it, Hoping to find success, strong enough to keep me there in that aeroplane ! Thank You Pat sir, Great 2019 to you ....
Incredible resource.
Briliant great book too "Writing Better Lyrics"
“This is not rocket surgery”
Thank you man! Very usefull!!
So enjoyable. Excellent explanation. Entertaining.
The crowd singing is so uplifting
Love how you explain things. Profound stuff! Phrasing on crack.
great teacher
The Man is a song writing genius and a brilliant teacher thank you Patt
What songs has he written that I need to hear?
He really culminates it at the very end in an interesting way doesn't he?
this guy is great, i learned alot. can we have more clips from this guys please
I want to write a song to her, she enslaved my heart already😄.. thank you pat. Love u pat
thanks for confirming what i thought i was doing was wrong, was actually right, if that makes sense... thanks for posting!
Absolutely amazing
A nice little seminar. I thought that the lyrics at the end were quite good!
Just excellent!
This man is brilliant. I fall asleep reading this stuff but in person or as close as, it really makes sense and Pat is a great teacher.
Me too lol. I’m just always trying to figure out how good I am so I can know my strengths and weaknesses so I can actually improve.
He let down my expectations, and left me unstable 😏
Gotta stick around for the end.
Pat, Just found your Channel. A couple of songwriters I know that attended Berklee College of Music. One is Liz Longley. I had interviewed her when she was 18 for an internet radio show I was doing. Second is Jesse Terry. I now do an internet tv show uploaded to CZcams called "The Performing Songwriter". Jesse was my guest on the last show uploaded.
You´ve open a whole new door for my songwriting, thanks Pat!
Hola Juan Carlos. Soy de Buenos Aires.. Vos dónde sos?
im still home but now it's five years later and i'm peaking in the window
i recommend you reading songwriting without boundaries by pat pattison ....
5 Years Later - I concur. I've done 2 weeks on object writing and I feel like I'm just scratching the surface. I'm going to keep doing daily exercises for a couple more weeks because I'm starting to really build the sense-bound language muscle.
Thanks for teaching
Wow this is super helpful.
nice seminar!
50:58 with your number of lines, with your line lenghts, with your rhyme skemes and your rhyme types.stable enough for my new song
Really, really inspired me
amazing seminar. I wish i was in attendance!
I'm trying to find an article I once read by Pat about John Mayer's song 'Badge & Gun'.
I've been looking for it everywhere and can't find it.
I now can't remember if it was an article or a seminar like this. Can anyone help?
Pat is great. I took his class at Berklee back in 75-76ish. I still refer to his notes from then...curious comment he makes here on unions however. Wonder if he meant it....sounded pretty stable to me...lol
That is amazing
Really interesting seminar !
32:31 his Do re me is actually an A note lol
thank you!
every major chord has 4 notes? that is crazy!!! haha. B is part of C Major chord? that would make it a CMaj7 chord, right?
47:00 shut up Pat. ok lmao
Did everyone miss the part when he used even number of lines to make his point 😂🔥❤️
pat for pat !!
I was looking at several songs to see if they followed the rule about real rhymes with even words, and false rhymes with uneven number of words, and I have not found that technique in any of the songs I have looked at. So what song that you know has it?
Great seminar..tough crowd..lol
Make subtitles please!! Thank you. Automatically for youtube
I need a mp3 rip of the class singing the world goes around the sun
even though I have been watching this, I am not sure how you put in a down beat with your lyrics, or what a downbeat is, and should I put it first or not?
"my name is pat and im music's thesaurus"
The girl singing, does a good job on the spot. who was she?
I love this guy I'd even rather sleep with him than with john mayer
Biggest lesson: creativity does not equal spontaneity
Thanks!
1:09:10 the girl flinches lololol
what is the song at 53:30??
Quoting Aristotle? I’m in.
He’s the Jack Nicholson of music
Tough croud
Very haha
A shout-out to the guy who edited the video....
Pat cracks up a funny dad joke at 1:03:33 -This guy's close up at 1:03:49 sums up "tough crowd"
@THEmscellany If you don't think he's dropping gems then you aren't super into songwriting. It seems like repetition but he's always adding subtle nuances that make all the difference.
I love the material, but i mute the video when he makes the voices.
He kinda looks like Gary Shandling. :)
"Doesn't matter what you are.
Get yourself a good car,
get out of here!"
how many hits has pat or his student wrote with his techniques? Please list some. TY
John Mayer is one of his students... Basically, anyone who has graduated from Berklee and took Songwriting in the past 20+ years is his student.
@@HeithinnGydja he may have doesnt really mean he used any of these techniques.
@@frankm6711 It's not a "may have" - he did. And he does. Don't ask a question if you have already decided on the answer - regardless of what is provided.
czcams.com/video/hs599FlQbkU/video.html
I don’t think he’s written any as far as I can see. People are saying he’s a genius but wouldn’t a genius be able to write a hit song? Maybe he has I don’t know. I do know some of my favorite songwriters don’t use any of this stuff.
@@HeithinnGydjaCould it be John Mayer was already a good songwriter and taking this guys class was just a coincidence?
No clue how the audience is sitting so quietly. :D
The teacher is so funny
What the heck is he talking about at 45:30? Friend, wind, and bend all perfectly rhyme, do they not!? Maybe not in every accent of English, but in his own standard American accent they certainly do.
Wind doesn't rhyme with the two other words.
