Lucerne Carnival / Luzerner Fasnacht
The Lucerne Carnival is the largest annual event in the city of Lucerne and Central Switzerland. Alongside the Basler Fasnacht, the Rabadan and the BĂ€rner Fasnacht, it is one of the largest carnival events in Switzerland.
Tagwache, Urknall und «Fötzeliregen»
The carnival starts on Dirty Thursday (âSchmotzige Donnschtigâ), the Thursday before Shrove Monday (âGĂŒdismĂ€ntigâ). The folk festival in the old town begins with the day watch at 5 a.m. A boat with brother Fritschi and his Fritschi family on board arrives at the Schweizerhofquai from Lake Lucerne in Lucerne. Brother Fritschi is the imaginary head of Lucerne's largest and oldest guild, the Safran Guild (founded around 1400). The "big bang", a very loud detonation, gives the Guuggenmusige and all carnival people the signal to start.
The Fritsch father and guild master at Safran welcomes Brother Fritschi and escorts him to the Fritschi fountain on Kapellplatz. They are accompanied by guests of honor, the Fritschi family (Fritschene, brother Fritschi's wife, with jester, bajazzo, child maid and peasants) as well as Harsthorn players and some Guggen bands. The carnival crowd then meets on the Kapellplatz for the "Fötzeliregen", which consists of more than 5 million "Fötzeli", i. H. approx. 4 à 4 cm snippets of paper (shreds). The scraps of paper, which are made from old telephone books, are filled into several sacks, each with an explosive device. These sacks, which were placed high above Kapellplatz the day before, will be detonated as soon as the Fritschi family has arrived at the Fritschi fountain. The «Fötzeli» rain down on the crowd. Then the traditional orange throwing begins around the Fritschi fountain. There was a record attendance at the 2015 day watch with 18,000 participants. In 2021, the carnival had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is successfully resumed in 2022.
The parades
On the afternoon of Dirty Thursday, the first of two big parades organized by the LozÀrner Fasnachtskomitee (LFK) takes place. The guilds and societies of the city of Lucerne, Guuggenmusigen and other groups present themselves on the parade route from the Hofkirche via the pier to the Neustadt with floats on which small stages have been set up. Current events of a political and social nature are satirized there. Increasingly, however, there are also fantasy subjects among them, in which the focus is primarily on the craftsmanship involved in building the chariot and the masks («Grende»).
