    My definition of tips is when you do a good job and the customer want to thank you for a great service. It is not a tip of they ask you to do an extra job and give you money for it. That is a service.

    On the tipping, if it is a straight tip on a regularly scheduled job that is already being done where there is no additional service(s) being rendered, then I would think that it would be fine for the employee to except it. But, if it is an additional service not normally being done or not scheduled, then that is the lawn care owner's call and the owner extra income to earn. I also feel that the lawn care owner also has the right to tell his employees not to accept any tips that a customer may be willing to hand out. A owner could be ready to up his price on the customer and then the customer could say, 'Well, I tip you workers regularly", and that could open up a 'can of worms', so to speak.

    When im your clock. You pay me not them. What your describing is not a tip. Thats payment for a job while your paying me an hourly rate. As a Tip if after the job we are payed to do is done and the owner comes out of the house and says. Thanks, great job. Here is a Fiver. I dont really see an issue with that if i was done doing the job you payed me to do and the owner hands me $5 i'll take it. I wont do extra work for them for $5 while on your clock. I think thats a critical difference.

    I work for a tree company. usually 3-5 guys depending how big the tree is and what has to be done. people will come out and offer tips to us and usually we either clear it with our boss and then split it for lunch or something that day. As long as they are still paying for the job then the tip is just extra. it is no different than tipping someone who is washing your car on top of the price.

    A tip is for showing gratitude for a service already rendered and paid for. A tip for an extra service wanted is not a tip, but a payment for service. Employees should always report additional requests to their boss, the guy/gal that signs their check, and get their blessing or respectfully decline the money and service.

    Well I am new to this Lawn Care Business, It is my son and I that do everything. We usually don't ever see the client, everything is done by text. All my clients are set up with the CASH app which I really love. The day before I arrive to mow the clients yard, I text them and tell them an approximate time that I will arrive. When we finish the clients yard I text them that we have completed the yard. They will then go on the CASH app and send me our payment for services completed. Some tip on the CASH app and some don't. I do let them know they don't need to tip on the first time they do it. I believe tips are ok as long as they are spread out with the whole crew that is working that property. But you have to remember tips are taxable also. So if a employee receives a tip they must report that income to the owner.

  • @stevenp1892
    @stevenp1892 Před 6 lety

    Nick, I partially agree with you on tips. It depends on what it is. If he/she asks my guy if you could help move a couch or something. If they want they can. If they ask to weed eat or something simillar then come to the boss. I also do not really care if the customer wants to come and throw my guys $5 or something small for Christmas or as an aprieciation once in a blue moon. As long as they are not getting paid to do something extra with my equipment.

  • @bigginksu
    @bigginksu Před 6 lety

    This is a very interesting, and a quite controversial topic. Here's my opinion. For doing a job that you are paid to do, on behalf of your employer/company, one should not accept a tip unless it is stated that tips are a part of your salary AND that expectation is passed onto the customer during the quoting phase. Instead of accepting a goodwill tip from your customer, politely and respectfully decline the tip and ask the customer 2 things: continue to keep us as your lawn care provider, and if we did an exceptional job please let my boss know. This will be beneficial because you will get continued loyalty and business from this customer (meaning continued inflow of revenue $$ and you get to keep getting paid), and any cash incentive the employee may or will get will come from the profits made by the company (or out of the boss's pocket). Now, AS for side jobs on your customer's request and using company equipment and tools AND accepting side payment for it or given as a quick complimentary one-time deal. This is a no-no, and if the customer is pressing the issue then you would need to make a phone call to your boss for approval and adjustments to the quote. These small side jobs, especially if it is done for free on a "one-time" deal, have a tendency to compound and become an expectation from the customer. Finally, never take a blank check from the customer or accept a cash goodwill tip unless okay'd by your employer.

      On a second note, for the past 3 years we have been mowing our grounds with a 21" push mower, every year we have to buy a new one since it cant handle how much we use it. As of yesterday we were BLESSED with new mower, a Ferris 700 series 44 inch, yes its small but all of our grass is in long and narrow areas with may obsturutions. going from the push mower to the Ferris we have cut down our mowing and trimming time from 10 hours to 3, worth the investment.

    I've been told before that hourly employees outside of restaurant servers generally are not allowed to accept tips. So I've offered bottled water, sodas, and prepackaged snacks/candy sometimes to mail carriers, delivery drivers, lawn care people... etc. Everyone is always happy to accept cold drinks, especially because of the hot weather.
    I've also never asked for any side jobs from anyone. It just seems weird to me.
    In the end, the whole tipping thing, seems too messy and complicated outside of waiters and waitresses. So I just offer the food and drinks, because there is no money involved in that.

    Additional service performed: Additional charges through the company as duties went beyond initial agreement.
    Simply being generous and tipping the crew to show appreciation for normal service: Tip split among those who were on the job and performing the service. A restaurant owner doesn't get a dividend of their floor staff's tips, that's not how it works.

    I don’t take tips right off the bat but I have had customers that insisted on tipping and I did accept the tip but it was not for a special service in addition to what I was already doing. They felt the quality of the service I provided warranted a tip. In that case I feel it was acceptable to take the tip plus the customer insisted on it. I hope this makes sense. Also I made the owner of the business aware that the customer had done so and the owner told me to keep the tip.

    The only way tipping from a customer would be ok is if the business had 2 co-owners working at the same job and one was asked to do something additional to what was already being done. Then that money goes back into the company anyways. I agree with you Nick, employees should not take tips from the customer's. If the customer really wants to tip someone, then they can give that money to the boss and like you said you can then give that to the employees on payday!

    Hi Nick
    I do the same i tell my workers any work outside what we their for goes through me as the business owner and i can make the decision. Point 1 if the worker does it on their own and hurts themselves or damages something they will expect the companies insurance to cover it but they want the money for doing the work and if they do hurt themselves then your down a worker untill they are able to get back to work or your out of pocket paying to fix what gets broken or higher insurance cost. 2 what the worker thinks could take longer and then throws the whole schedule out and could impact on other customers. 3. If they do it once the customer will keep going to the worker and if the employee accepts they are double dipping by getting paid extra from the customer plus they are on the clock for their hourly pay which cost you more money that your not getting paid for. 4 its extra wear and tear or possable equipement costing the business that your not getting paid for. To me at the end of the of the day its a form of stealing which is a level 3 breach and termination from the company

I tell my guys they are not allowed to accept tips. Any employee accepting tips will be terminated immediately. All monies (pay, bonuses, tips, etc.) come from the check signing sensei . I have even had to let guys go over this. I make it a point to coach/train my customers that if they are so inclined to tip, it should only be run through me. Now, having said that, before the haters start stalking me, I give my guys monthly bonuses (especially during the busy season) in which any "tips" received are divided equally among all the men that have put forth the effort, come to work on time, don't have negative attitudes, etc. I believe in fair for one is fair for ALL. We work as a team, we are rewarded as such, as well!!!
    As far as additional services are concerned, that should be a customer/sensei issue. Any work detail has absolutely nothing to do with the hired hands simply because, like you said, what is claimed to be "only a few minutes" turns in to a nightmare that takes longer than expected, you don't get get paid properly for services rendered, delays in arrivals for other paying customers, etc.

    I would say that it is okay for customers to tip the company/business not the employees. I am saying this because right now I am a teen lawn care owner and I will happily receive money from the customer wether it be them paying for the services we have given them or them tippping us. Whatever it might be how I plan to do it in the future if and when I start employing is the customers tips the company/business in your case Saving Green Lawn Care and then when your company/business pays the employees on the date you have it set for all the tips your company/business has accumulated goes to all employees including the owner. I also let the customers know this before I agree to take the tip from them. Just a 14 year olds opinion on this subject.

    If you believe the "Customer is always right", then it's not even an issue. So long as its not extra work done, and just them showing appreciation, then it ought not be an issue.

    I don't like tips. Once it starts the customer and/or employees seem to think it an obligation there after.
    Either charge for the service, or do not charge and take no tips. Business with me would be clear cut. You pay an agreed upon amount.
    Tips are not and would not be in any of my agreements.

    All depends on the customer and the job. If it's too much. I say talk to my boss. If it's something I can do easy and without wasting any time really. No problem. If they offer me money, I say no thank you I just want to make my customers happy, and if they force it, I'll accept it, and tell my boss.
    Note that a lot of people that are of different cultures could take your refusal as an insult, if they have less money than you, they may take it as an insult there, so on so forth. At the end of the day make the customer happy without making his life difficult. That's my bosses mentality

    BUT NIIIICK! Ok I sale propane, I fill bottles and work the office and people always want to tip me for " I'm friendly and do a great job" " not treating them like dumb people" and this is what they say to me all the time. I take the tips BECAUSE that's there way of saying thank you and I don't want to reject them. It's like there good deed I guess you can say. I'm doing my job and giving 100% to my customer which we all should feel because we should care about the company like it's ours, If we do a great job we have customers and we keep our jobs. I give all my tips to my boss because they are really tipping our company for the way he wants us to do.

    Ok so I have a question say you had an employee for 13yrs and you get hurt and have said person runnin the show for ya for basically the whole summer and takin care of the equipment oil change blades ect. Would you still leave them at the regular employment rate say its 10.00$ an hr when the owner is normally working or would you give them a raise for running everything?

    I love the multi angles you did, even though its a PITA to have to set it up. As far as the tip goes i see where you are going with that. Employee's taking money out from under your nose. I dont think its a good idea for employee's to be taking tips for doing side jobs at all. Hourly pay, your equipment, your fuel. Any jobs done and money earned while on the clock, goes to the business.
    Even thought i said what i said in the last video, that was just an answer to your question about if he should be hired back after he took a blank cheque. If the cheque was blank the employee assumed it was theirs because i guarantee you there was no pre discussion between employee and employer about accepting tips. So all in all. Yes i think he should hire them back but make sure the tips deal is understood.

    A tip out of the kindness and appreciation from the customer is fine, but if you do something extra (with the bosses permission) it is no longer a tip but a compensation for a service.

      I would rather keep the job in stead of the tip. Lie to the owner and chances are you get fired. Keeping the money would be the same as lying to Nick. Nick gives all kinds of raises and bonuses to his people, give him the money rather then be deceptive.

    In my opinion if an employee is tipped for normal services or extra services that are going through the company the employees deserves the tip but if it's to do a additional service it's not okay.

    Around holidays we’ve gotten tips before like around Christmas time for example but the customer tipped all the guys which is just two but I don’t see a problem with that style of tip but like you said doing extra work and then the tip being more or less like a payment I don’t like but let’s say for example you have a granny lawn and she asks if you can move a flower pot a couple feet over it won’t take but a second so I don’t mind the guys doing that but if she tries to give them the “tip” for that they shouldn’t take it because like you said they are already getting paid and it’s not something that they need to feel like they need to pay extra for
