Its sort of humbling to know that the great Joshua Bardwell also gets plagued by frustrating quad failures haha
The timing of this video was PERFECT.
Ahhhh.... A real FPV video. I feel like they should all be like this! One crash and failure. Maybe I have too much BetaFPV stuff🤣
Bardwell your videos always seem to come out right as I am thinking of particular drone related topics! Crashed my drone on Tuesday, got black screen but I still had osd and vtx transmission. I threw the drone on the bench and luckily all I had to do was solder the signal wire back on because it had busted off and within 5 min I was up and flying again. Sorry about your flight controller, but thanks for the videos!
I can sympathize with you on this one. Happened to my five inch quad. Literally went through the exact same steps. Now I'm 2 weeks out waiting on a new board. Incidentally it was on the xilo jb edition.
i friggin love these kind of videos. this is one of the most fun/frustrating parts of FPV is just troubleshooting issues. Its cool to see how you trial and error your process. Too bad it was a sad face at the end but still nice to pinpoint the issue.
Sounds like JB is fricken rubbing off on you 😅😮
Just had the same experience, luckily enough it wasn’t the board just the 5v cam pad, thanks Joshua Bardwell your the man
This actually worked. On my IFlight FC, I soldered the yellow wire to the V1 pad and made an extension for the video wire to the vtx. At least I have a back up now. Thank you for the lesson!
Another fpv problem of mine covered in one of your videos, thank you sir
This was my first major problem with my tiny trainer. Awesome tip on cross-referencing the fc with that bypass. I got lucky with my betafpv board and it just died over a year later! (esc) Cheers!
Dude - I’ve smoked three of these AIO boards. Even soldering with a microscope and using a multimeter it is SO easy to blow a UART, bridge a connection, etc.
Thanks JB...I was about to throw my AIO camera from mobula 7 2s...i bridged Vin and Vout...now figured out the camera is fine.
He really tries with these videos. Full props ❤
I love you. I never would have thought my FC was bad. (It still flies...just no video.) But I had exact same results as you. Off to get a new FC now!
Truly a very helpful video thank you so much for all your work
Great video!! I had the exact same problem are was able to also narrow it down to the FC by wiring the camera directly to the VTX. THANK YOU!
Bardwell’s dramatic sequences at the end of a video are legendary. Although frankly, the fridge one was my fave.
I love these troubleshooting videos!
LOL I just got to the exact same point of troubleshooting on a whoop after trying 3 cameras.
Thanks JB - even though I watched this 2 years ago, it is still helpful. 😎
Would love to see you try to diagnose and repair on the PCB level!
Thanks for that, i had black screen with osd up still tried the direct wire from vtx didnt work, my camera stopped after a crash in snow and drying out so i just took the camera and hit it with brake cleaner all over and now it works again! Your guide helped me learn how to trouble shoot my cameras thanks also love your betaflight videos im a noob
Very informative. Thanks JB
happy freaking flying to you 2 jb
This is why I watch your channel, if the ones with experience have issues, I am out.
The nice thing about being majorly near sited is we have magnifying glass vision for reading pc boards and soldering.
Great content as usual. thanks
I have a TinyGo with the Caddx Loris camera and I had my video feed quit as well. My OSD was still present, but my camera feed was missing. I took the TinyGo apart (dang they are tiny) and found that the ribbon cable was partially unclipped. I clipped the one end down and presto - I have video again. Thanks for you video!
I had a similar issue an cheap 20x20 fc. A change of the osd font brought me to the solution. Change it to bold font or some other of the BF fonts... Reset the fc & esc and check if it worked. I had trouble to do this, but after some tries it worked from then. I had to plug in a battery to update the freaking osd chip... Maybe it works for you. Good luck and happy flying 🐈
I feel your pain... took out 2 motors and an arm on my flight club PRoton. Both discontinued....
i like that the end is different every time
Finally a video on this problem on CZcams. Had my Roma L3, from the specs it can use ntsc or pal. When switch, one with black screen with osd but the other one working fine. So I think it was problem with the fc? Found this out even before I fly it. Maybe you can try switch between that two?
New favourite outro for sure 😂
good video. you need to do more of these quick little troubleshooting videos for the new guys that don't know how to do this stuff. like troubleshooting "is it a bad motor or esc?" I get really tired of typing out that one.
On the issue of "Is it a bad motor or esc?" Issue, I just plug it in and try to fly and whichever component doesn't catch on fire is the good one 👍🏻. Problem shooting ESC's is still probably the hardest thing to do other than just swapping it out and seeing if the issue goes away. You have any tips on doing it another way? 5 year veteran FPV pilot myself so basic remedy's I already know...I think 😜
@@smooth_ops2942 there was a video on youtube, probably this channel actually! About testing continuity of the ground and esc pad I believe. And if it beep (not enough resistance) then esc is fried.
I am sure it can be found with a good search
Literally first result (for me) of a youtube search: troubleshooting esc.
czcams.com/video/NW4a3AnraVk/video.html
@@smooth_ops2942 I totally know how to do it. Been racing for 4 yrs now. You have to get very good with quick troubleshooting and field repairs when racing. Quickest easiest way is to swap the "bad" motor with a good one and see if the issue stays or goes away. Stays is is esc, goes away is motor. Always a good idea to check the wires for cuts etc to make sure it's not shorting on the frame or anything. Was just saying he needs to do more of the shorts to help noobs that don't have a clue where to start.
@@glidentity honestly that fastest non bs way is to do a quick motor swap and see if that fixes the problem. if not...esc. no need to bust out the multimeter and check continuity, resistance, blah blah, aint nobody got time for that
Hey Josh can you do a video of your race day would be interesting to see what happens on the day at a gp race
czcams.com/video/0ZBbuc0oYSQ/video.html
Put on the camera which voltage reading on the osd camera itself👍 happy flying
Nice Troubleshooting video.
Might be time to try the iflight beast aio
I feel your frustration.
Yep I agree. Supr stuff! Like the real world theme. You tought me so much in these last like 8 months since I started FPV ... thankes Joshua 😘❤️
I had issues with the jhemcu 411 30a I had in mine I swapped it out for the tbs aio and its a much neater build
Great work, Joshua! Thanks a lot! 😃
You know what would be fantastic? A wire with probe tips or something... So you could connect the video wires without dissoldering them. But unfortunately, I don't know a solution for that. 😕
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
There's no easy way to do it without desoldering at least one of them, probably the wire that goes to the vtx, jumping them might work but it's always risky jumping pins on a live circuit
@@jpsalis Yeah, that's true as well...
Had the same issue last week. Landed on grass, the props has cut some grass into my FC in the OSD chip and I lost video. Now I use a clean feed from the vtx and I have set my radio to tell me battery voltage, just to avoid replacing the FC hahaha. I actually found really distracting the amount of info you get into your osd. Only matters if you want to troubleshoot a flight and see some stats.
One time I crashed and my video went to static. I thought I had destroyed my VTX. Nope, it still had blinking lights. I did a channel scan and found it had somehow changed bands! It had little buttons to change band and channel, I figure something must have hit the button. It never happened again, but if you have static a channel scan is a cheap and easy check.
I've seen this on some boards when there is a format (NTSC vs PAL) mismatch between the camera and the OSD.
Also could switch over it over to tbs crossfire or tracer and use the fusion osd
I believe the same thing happened to me. I blamed it on the OSD chip. I Hooked up a RealPIT Switch to Vbat and a UART to turn it on/off The VTX, camera to the RealPIT. Turn on the Camera OSD to show voltage.
I had exactly the same issue with my bardwell F4 a week ago.
Even if the video output from the FC is defective, you can still use/activate the cam's OSD (inc. voltage monitoring), at least temporarily after soldering cam and vtx directly 😉
Ah but that will only give you the 5v reading from the fc regulator unless the cam also has a vbat wire and you add it.
I did exactly everything that I was watching you do. I also did another way of checking to see if torn wires were within casings of the wire that was good switch cameras that was good on soldered my OSD from the flight controller and it’s still giving me black screen
Oh this is a new format. Quite enjoy it!
I know the feeling, JB.
I had the same problem on a GEPRC Sparrow, when I upgraded BF. First time I bought a new "Tower" Stack and changed only the vtx, but I didn't solve, so I changed also the FC and I solved. I tried to upgrade BF also on this FC and it happened one more time...
I changed another FC, but I didn't trow away the other 2.
I'm using those 2 fried FC, upgraded on cinewhoop with Caddx Vista and thanks to a Uart the osd works!
P.s.
Poor little Geprc Sparrow has remained to BF 3.4 😔
Is there an option of soft serialing or using another trace/path instead of the “dedicated” one? Or could it be a resistor or some other surface mounted thing you can swap out?
This is ace, as a noob I have been fault finding the same issue on my Nazgul5 V2.
The question is am I able to swap my FC for any other FC not necessarily IFlight.
If so can you recommend any ;)
Thats how i felt when the same thing happened to me on my nazgul5. It sucked
Nice
i had the same thing happen to me anf funnily i did the EXACT same things i soldered vtx and cam together and it worked and i also put them back normally just to see if it magically worked again
I had a problem with my Nazgul 5". No OSD. I just upgraded the FC, found out the new one didn't work with XM+ so I upgraded to CRSF. Best problem ever😂
This was an entertaining vid to watch!
My guess comes in @ 4:48. Popped a cap of the camera board. Lets see........................Ok not it. Could you inspect the camera itself to see if there was a place that the 5v ground out and caused an overload at the FC? OSD burnt during the walk of shame! Thanks for showing the real reel for reals!
I got the same issue and the remedy that I did I moved the video terminal from camera and directly soldered to the vtx of nanohawkX. It works fine but no monitor for the battery on my goggles.
some cameras give battery voltage on their osd if you prefer it to telemetry
Hi Joshua, was the camera getting a positive voltage from the FC? I've had three quads that have failed like this.. Add an external 5v + feed or vbat if acceptable to the camera and presto I can fly again. 👍
Regards
Steve
How about a tutorial on the blackbox-tools?
BrainFPV is notorious for this. I've had multiple Raddix boards do this. I think the OSD basically fries itself.
use the TBS Cloud and let the Fusion display your OSD
I had in few quads same issue just replaced from fried fc osd modules and starts working. But you need microscope to do that and hotair
Ouch. Which AIO from BetaFPV was that? Wanted to buy the BetaFPV Toothpick F405 20A V4 for my micro long range built but if their AIOs just die like that.. Had the AIO of my Eachine trashcan fail suddenly midflight at its fourth flight. Started smoking. At least Banggood offered to send a replacement board - honestly didn't think they would. Still sucks.. :(
Same issue with mine, got black screen after the crash, part of the board 5v not working which i believe is powering the osd, a lot of headache to trace out as i plan to run a dedicated 5v bec. This is the awesome betafpv aio 12a. Sucks. My Mamba aio 13a still alive even if i soak it on rain water.
I didn't know you were still going on youtube, Been a while since I watched anything interesting, have you watched Nick Burns at all?
i was getting this error after landing on Wet Grass after removing any wet grass and letting the drone dry completly it worked just as new.
Put a spoiler on your kwad jb, it’ll fix all your problems
Look at the up tilt on that quad..
Took a year off droning because this happened... this game me the motivation to go figure out what is messed up. Hoping a bad wire
I had 2 ant cams go black changed cam it worked
I had a beta fpv aio whoop die recently in a similar crash
on my jhemcu f7 supra 20x20 fc i had a black screen osd no video issue but the camera and vtx pads were flipped from the wiring picture i thought i had a defective board at first.
I've got the same problem Just that I've got overexposed video with osd working but if I solder the video wires directly the video is good and well exposed..I think my flight controller osd/video part is somewhat damaged or bridged.
First Love your vids
I had this problem yesterday. When I gave a big throttle I had a black screen for 1 to 2 seconds and my drone was beeping... I saw that the zip tire that was holding my vtx pushed on the reset button. I cut it and I have no longer this issue ;)
Maybe the OSD chip has pins with cold joints, or some small piece of grass is making short somewhere.
Worth a look.
Ultra sonic clean it and check or resolder the chip under a microscope. you can also check the voltage supply to the osd chip
I already had a hunch that the osd chip was blown up... I've had the same happen with me with 2 versions of the 4s betafpv aio boards
OSD on flight controller died, i got the same issue with mine. looked like a small short circuit on the osd "legs" fried the OSD. i could even see a small burn on it
Hello Joshua.
I have a black screen problem now, i have VTx signal coming out of the VTx, but no video on the screen display, and no OSD display either. I have checked my fpv camera and plugged it into another drone, at it worked fine. But using a different camera on the VTx got me the same problem. I followed your video till the part where you unsolder / solder the video wires from the fpv camera and the VTx from the FC. Which video wire from the VTx should i tap / solder together with the fpv video wire? From the FC to the VTx i see 2 video wire, one says V-out, the other V-in?
BTW, i am using the GEPRC Stable AIO FC with the GEP-VTX200-WHOOP VTx.
I hope you can help me.
Thanks much!
Everytime I have to take multimeter to these small quads I'm always afraid to hit 5v and grd together
A good headband magnifier with decent lighting should help boost your confidence & capability at dealing with these ever shrinking flight controllers.
Last night I had to solder straight onto the pin of an STM32 to get RX2 working since Diatone in their wisdom didn't think to include a breakout pad for it on the FC in the Tina Whoop. Headband magnifier FTW.
@@licensetodrive9930 no way I could do. Wish I could. Got 2 bad fc in a row. Dji plug uarts wasn't working. And no pads for them
@@licensetodrive9930 you would think they would have thought that we'd like to use uart2 but... nope. uart2 reserved for the braves.
Have you come across any apps for the FPV that allow you to plot automated waypoints routes?
Dammit man what a bummer☹️
Could you try jhemcu?
Any pieces of conductive dirt in the FC?
hy Joshua bardwell I have the old fc f4 and I put the vtx in the flight controller and the cam too, and I see the old but black screen and them I put the video directly and the screen is black without old, what could be the problem the cam I think is the problem . why do you think
I have a mobula7 hd that has black screen when you arm and increase throttle. Video is fine when the motors aren’t running but as soon as you arm and start to fly, black screen. Anyone have an ideas? I’ll try some of the troubleshooting from here. Maybe it’s the board.
Hey Joshua love your videos my tinyhawks video gets static when I get past half throttle then it cuts out completely do you now I fix for it I have a eachine VTX o3s on the way would that fix it??
Do you use a cap on the battery?
Get battery voltage from camera osd?
If camera video wire was bridged for example, could that also cause black screen?
You finally put the sign up lol
What’s that thing you use instead of your goggles
Best Channel for FPV 😍😍🌹
My goes black when i turn on the trasmiter is loco, with osd sometime
Might be the OSD chip (AT7456E) that's loose?
I'm having this issue with my Mobula7 1S, but when I try a different pair of goggles, I get video and OSD. Part of me wonders if i need to replace my antennas or the rx module. I have been wanting to upgrade that, too..
