I've developed an appreciation for the Grateful Dead with time. Their music isn't as much about writing phenomenal songs or anything that can be described as flashy. More than anything else, the Dead is an exploration of sounds and sonic textures and positive vibes. Their music is something that can be easily visualized (very round and colorful, just like psychedelic visuals), so much like the psychedelic experiences that inspired it, sound and sight are seamlessly combined. EDIT: I wrote this when I was first getting into the Dead. I now recognize just how great their songwriting is, especially on American Beauty
Oh no - they were phenomenal songwriters. That's my main complaint about Phish - they can't write a hook to save their lives. The GD were vastly underrated songwriters.

I saw them when I was in the Navy too, Golden Hall, San Diego!! Two shows, with Brent. Two smokin', groovin' shows at that! I'd seen them once before that, upstate NY, at Rochester w/Keith and Donna. And then saw them whenever possible, throughout the years. What a long strange trip, indeed. 😎🤘
My 2nd DEAD show was at Golden Hall back in early 80s (probably '81 or '82) first was at Alpine Valley July '81. so Golden hall was '82. Catching Grateful Shred tonight in Baton Rouge, LA. Dead tunes good, no GREAT for the soul...
I was watching a video where a guy was expressing what makes the Grateful Dead great is Robert Hunter and their masterful songs. In my head I'm thinking yea that's PART of what makes them great. Then you tube decides to help prove my feelings with this brilliant mixtape coming up next lol. I do love and sing the Dead's songs and they are part of their greatness but add this and it is what takes them to a whole other level of Greatness and makes them Masters. After 36 years still my favorite band. Anyone that questions my Love of the Dead will be forced to listen to this entire thing lol.

To paraphrase the late, great Rod Serling: "Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into… the Phil Zone" Phil Lesh's concept of phrasing is unique in the history of music. He has a highly evolved way of phrasing that in my mind puts him in a class with John Coltrane, Frank Zappa, Johnny Winter (Maybe it's just me, and I know it's just the Blues but every time, Winter grabs me by the collar, gets right in my face and says "I'm talkin' to you! YOU!"), - oh, and some guy named Jerry Garcia.

5 hours of goosebumps, ethereal cognitive meanderings, tears, laughter, reactive flowing body motion, fond memories of life affirming interactions with fellow dead head travelers, and overwhelming gratitude for the immeasurable waves of GD joy and catharsis. Thank you for this!!!

Thanks so much for this. I think I listen to it probably 4 times a week
Frank Rising me too!! I wish there weren't as many ads 😤 Jerry wanted his art to be free!
@@gratefuldeadosaurusrex asmuch as I HATE to say this....the pay version of CZcams drops all ads, especially during the vids. I have to do that version ,i ts essential. It's totally recommended for these extreme jams that are lengthy.
Quintessence of GD in just over 5 hours. Magnificent.
This is the best jam compilation by Dead. Thank you. Love from India
gosh, thank you double plus good for this aural experience!
No drugs needed. I can listen to and enjoy the GD without the use of drugs. The GD have kept me sane in an insane world for at least 38 years now. Not too many Airborne Rangers who can say they listen to the GD too decompress after a mission. God Bless America.
i saw em the Norfolk when i was in the Navy ....god bless the dead
@jimmie jenkins what were the naive hippies doing to get beaten down?
Black Jack decompress anyway you can! Sounds like your approaching it in a healthy way. Take care. Out.
Pure joyful psichedelia. The Best compilation of the kind ever done. Geniality is here at home. I can ' t stop listening. .... Garcia is an alchemic mesmerizing Wizard and his Band , over the Top.
To paraphrase the late, great Rod Serling: "Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into… the Phil Zone"
Phil Lesh's concept of phrasing is unique in the history of music.
🙌 Pure bliss 🍻
awesome early 70's jams nothing like the Grateful Dead from that time. 01:16:39 - The Other One (San Diego Sports Arena, San Diego, CA, 11/14/73) gives me chills. Man I miss Jerry,
Mark Stevens Possibly my favorite part in the whole compilation
"not fade away" at the end ...WHAT A GREAT ENDING...PERFECTION AT ITS BEST...
This is flat out amazing. Psychedelic elevator music to keep you spinning for 5 hours!
I never got into the dead until 2018. I don't know why, my younger brother was a dead head and followed them during the eighties. I first listened to this actual video in 2018 and I am a Grateful Dead lover now. Magnificent vibe and feeling. Life is good.
Hell yeah
What a long strange trip it's been...
Is it any wonder that as many shows as these guys have done over the decades has created such a "traveling" sound? This stuff is great when you're on the road...for however long. ✌
we all need this
3571113 we all have it 😊. New one coming soon 🙃
JAM..at 3.47 min. is incredible..no more other word...
