The sound that you make when your singing infront of a electric fan
That's how I sound. When I was a kid, I thought I was gonna be a techno singer. XD
‘That you only meant well?/Well of course you did.’
Just a devastatingly effective song. Those two lines alone are so charged with emotion. Accusation, hurt, and just a little bit of understanding. It’s so raw.
came for the *MmMM what you say* , stayed for the whole song
it's fckn good
Dan Ny no. he took the inspiration of his song
from this one. it’s towards the third quarter of the song.
ade ade he as in jason derulo ? keep out if you have no idea what you’re talking about lol
God, a capella is an underrated genre. I love these kind of songs.
Metal Sonic? [Adrian] same and i’m happy because i’m in color guard and this is the song the band is going to play for marching season
This TECHNICALLY isn't a capella, as Imogen is using a keyboard to vocode her voice.
However, its still a damn good song.
I actually think the fact that this isn't an a capella song is part of what makes it so special.
i never realized how powerful the meme part of this song is. like theres passion and anger in the lyrics and the tone and we just never noticed bc of its meme status
I really thought the orginal was deurlos song but this is I didt know bc its like slowed whatcha say
This song is so calming. And sad
Lady Twili Nightcore yeah it is about her parents divorce and this song is based on how she felt
about the thing Were Oily Marks On The Wall Where Pleasure Moments Hung Before" I think shes talking about family Photos
And then the best part comes. "MMMM WATTCHA SAY?..."
*Happy noises*
This is like auto-tune, singing in front of an electric fan, recording an audio from a device through a microphone, and having a cold at the same time.
I love it.
Mi.Mu gloves is what she uses to change to the tone and pitch of her voice.
If this doesn't play at my funeral I will be quite disappointed.
If my favorite part is 2:55, it is not for the meme.
It's for the melody, the harmony.
I love that high note during blood and tears around the 2:40 mark. Serious range. It gives me chills.
And then how heavy the second “they were here first” was immediately after. So powerful.
Um.... The actual song was a lot different than I expected to sound like
@@IDoBeParis Actually, Jason bought the copyright for the "mm watcha say" part and made his own song with it, this is actually the original.
@@IDoBeParis this was released in 2005 and "Watcha Say" was released in 2010
Nobody would have liked Jason Derulo's song if he hadn't sampled this song.
This actual song, I never knew outside of the few lyrics that are a meme
and included in Jason DeRulos' song. But now, my best friend showed it
to me and told me about how much it means to him as a child who
experienced a divorce. I don't have any experiences, but nevertheless,
his showing me what this song means to him has caused me to perceive
this song in a different way.
As it’s been 30 degrees centigrade in the UK today, I’ve just recreated this on every fan in my house. I’m ever so talented.
I hate how the song got popular for the "mm watcha say part". I wish it was well known for the entire piece itself, rather than just that part. This is a beautiful and amazing song and Imogen is my queen
+joshy2 boss lol thanks for taking the time out of your day to tell me that
At first I was like "This just seems like a normal song! Why are people talking about it being a meme?"
Then I got to 2:55
*oh.*
@@relish1192 Mm whatcha say (x10) for the best (x10) what did you say (x10)
You know, looking at it objectively, the hook at 2:55 is musically one of the best parts of this song, but because it got sampled and memed so much, I feel like it's my least favorite part. It's like when you say a word so many times that it doesn't even sound like a word any more; I've heard the hook so many times that it doesn't feel like it belongs in this song
I know what you mean. it somehow fits perfectly in the song but doesn't fit at all
this song would have an amazing remake to this day. the hook would sound very different most likely and the anger in it would probably more expressed. it really is beautiful but.. feels so dumb now
This song is about a kid's perspective going through a divorce? "Oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before (Family photos)" "Crop circles forming in the carpet (Furniture being moved)
For some reason I thought it was about a person who was murdered and was a ghost in their old house where the murder happened...like a murder suicide where a lover killed her and then took their own life. Now she sees where the old furniture has already been moved out, etc. She's bitter when perhaps she hears someone will move in soon, even though it only just happened. (They were here first...as in her things...she...was here first) I'm probably the only person who thinks that lmao.
@nikkiB I thought the same thing!! Does anybody know where I can find the meaning for the song writers?
wow, I can't believe so many meme songs originate from an actual awesome song.
It really took me this long to find out Jason Derulo didn't create that😂😭
The O.C brings me back here everytime
Sang this for our choir around 7 years ago...
Still know the lyrics
Still know both tenor and bass parts
Still a fantastic song
This sounds awesome to do for choir, I might ask my director about this
I deadass expected the name of this song to be called “Whatcha say”, This song doesnt deserve to be a meme its so good :0
edit: yeah the jason derulo actually stole the part lol nvm
Dipsticks Had a life. Art. If you didn’t know there is a song called watcha say that uses the mm watcha say part. It’s buy Jason derelict
Edit: I meant Jason derulo but it put derelict lmao.
Kuinileti Adeliah Saleupolu omg lmao I didn’t even know I typed derelict 😂
If this isn't played at my funeral.. I will haunt all of you..
If this is played at your funeral...does that mean you died cuz of hide and seek overdose?
It's a bad funeral song, unless you were actually a part of an oppressed minority who died in the hands of oppressors/invaders.
Alvin Mendez no no no no , the song is suppose to be open to interpretation for any tragic event.
I love the different meanings people have for this song, some say the Holocaust(my personal favorite), abusive families/relationships, and it really shows how good this song is.
Idk where the Holocaust thing came from, Heap themself said its more to do with parents splitting when you're young so people have taken it way out of context to apply basically genocide to it
2:15 the lead up to "Blood and Tears" gave me goosebumps
I did not expect this song to be THAT meme.
It sounded so sad, so touching and heartbreaking and BAM - you give me THIS?
"mmh, what you say-"
Of ALL things existing, I did NOT expect THIS to come!
Haven't heard this song in over 10 years I have nostalgic goosebumps and tears running down my face. Music speaks so loudly.
*Normal People* Brought me here.
This song is a lot prettier when you know what it's about. Imogen wrote this when her parents got divorced and her family was being torn apart. Most of the imagery describes what an empty house looks like when you're moving out and remembering the fun times you've had and seeing it all dissapear in front of you. Sad, but beautiful.
The "mm whacha say" part and what comes after that describes the custody battle between the parents.
Having gone though that many times myself with my family yea... it describes a lot of the feelings and memories I had as a child.
Thank you. Yes, it is. People are free to interpret it however they wish, but that is exactly what she was writing about. It's a relief when the author actually informs people because it grounds things for those who simply wish to understand what inspired the lyrics.
This song is about the Holocaust. The bridge is about the general Holocaust. "Hide and seek." Meaning, hiding from the Nazis. "Trains and sewing machines." Meaning, the trains used to transport the people to concentration camps and the sewing machines women were often forced to work with, until they died from malnutrition, starving, or execution. "All those years they were here first." Meaning, that the Jewish religion was there before Hitler.
The Chorus is mostly about Hitler. She uses a lot of sarcasm in it. Basically she means that she can't believe that Hitler did this and claimed that it was for the best.
The first and third verses are about when the Jewish people first arrived at the camps and their houses had been ransacked. "The dust has only just begun to form crop circles in the carpet." Meaning, the empty houses. "Oily marks appear on walls, where pleasure moments hung before." Meaning, the items gone.
ohmygod you are brilliant in a metaphorical person but I just couldn't get this song I just thought this song was related to war-ish and I'm guess I'm right 🙈
The lyrics in this song can be up for interpretation, because we all have different experiences. Ik the songs lyrics were originally meant to be about a kids perspective having divorced parents. But personally, this song leaves me reminiscing over old memories that made me happy before. I reminisce about being with my family, who at times it feels like they hate me. But this song always brings me back to before all the mistakes and arguments and confusion.
Dear Sister... *gun shot* 2:55
Quick question: did Jason derulo copied some of this song's part?this came out earlier than his song
I don’t think so. I think he was allowed permission since she’s still alive
Expresses immense pain, helplessness, stress & anxiety with a desperate yearn for hope & optimism most kids between 6 & 13 feel as their parents divorce or split up..
This is just throughly depressing

That's why memes are cancer. Young ones will realize this soon enough and then they will cease to be cancer.
Blood Orange love this song, I don't recall ever seeing the meme.
Who else remembers bawling as this played on The O.C. when home girl shot Ryan’s brother? Still brings back memories even in 2020 😫💔
Yup. And now people are talking about this song being a meme, and I'm like "You mean the TV show that made it world famous?"
when i first heard this song i didnt know english, and i used to fall asleep to it, sounded like my mother singing. Now i know english. What a bitter song. still beautiful tho
I'll never stop loving this song. The harmonies gave me ASMR-like stimulation long before I had any idea what ASMR was. Such a beautiful song that has helped me through some really difficult times (and overall is so very underrated). Definitely one of my favorites.
Reading these comments with this music in the background is rather fitting.
This is still a heartbreaker and I'll always come back.
And i always hear “what did she say” before the last outro. Very telling line
Dear Sister was the best CZcams video I've ever seen.
this song is actually really sad? i heard the full version on a mix and I was like "this is so sad wtf"
kudos to Imogen. they did well on this piece.
Play this at my funeral. Thanks.
I was born in 2001, and I grew up in the wild west of CZcams and later formative years of the internet in general. For so long this song has been a meaningless meme, but now: It's a masterpiece. This song deserves more recognition as one of the greats...big only it didn't get sampled
the meme will never die
I haven't been notified when people one'd up this and I was really surprised at the amount of people who liked my 12 AM thoughts
Mom: Go to your room!
Me: whispers inaudibly*
My mom: 2:55
You know what's funny, when I discovered the meme, i went to look for the full song. One of my substitute teachers players played the song and said the name of it and I recognized it. I was smirking the whole time as I waited for the meme part to begin. When it did, my whole class was like "OH MY G-SIR!!! SIR WHY!?" and I was just smiling to myself
I want this playing at my funeral, and the "mmm whatcha say" part to hit as my coffin is lowered in my grave.
First time I heard this song was on the OC. Years later still just as good
Me in beginning of video:Man, this looks interesting, it's so cool. Why haven't I heard of this before?
Me at 2:55 : WAIT WHAT?!!!! THIS IS WHERE THAT CAME FROM?!!!!! OMG X,D
This song actually reminds me of the feeling of dissociation...
This song is so incredibly far beyond and above any stupid meme.
the part you came here to see is 2:55
+I sold my soul to tumblr
Thank you bro, we are all sick, you saved 2 precious minutes of my time in wich I could be watching porn or sleeping.
+I sold my soul to tumblr
No, I came for the whole song. The _entire_ song is good. Jason Derulo soiled this song, making everyone only care about the bridge. Pisses me off. Heck, some people think Derulo is the original artist of that bit. Sickening.
Imogen Heap - Hide And Seek
Jason Derulo - Whatcha say
Yeah really shows his song is built around the sample of this song.
I normally never comment twice, but uh. This song is really good?? Like it makes me wanna cry kinda good? Idk why??? The tunes it hits and ugh-- it just, reminds me of when I was younger, and still a little kid. Before all these problems hit. An oblivious little kid with an amazing life. All smiles and laughter. Full of love and genuine emotion. Yes, the kid who started therapy for anger and anxiety in only 1st grade, but the kid who had 90% happy on the little emotion pie chart she made. The kid who loved her friends and family to such an high extent that she never considered they could ever do something wrong. The kid who openly shared emotions with her parents and wanted to be with her friends every chance she got.
The auto toned sounding voice reminds me of my Grandad's keyboard/piano. He played it constantly, and still does to this day. He let me and my siblings press the keys and make little songs. It was one of the keyboards that came with sound effect noises if you switched it to a certain setting. One of them was the "Mmm, what you say".
This song just, somehow reminds me of those days. The days when I knew I had anxiety and just considered it as a part of me, not a problem that could lead me to where I am today. Idk. Thanks for reading.
Man it's amazing how memes can introduce people to great bangers such as this one.
Bizarre song with with one of the catchiest hooks sitting in the middle of it- which makes it even stranger
“Mr.Stark, I don’t feel so good....”
*fades away*
Mmmm watchu say
"Mr stark you don't look so good"
"If i hear one more pop culture reference out of you"
This is the saddest song iv ever heard , it scares me to a very deep level
Ever have a song hit you in the soul? Makes you feel alive.
2:55 when you were not paying attention and the teacher calls on you 😭
Me yesterday in physics he asks me what the opposite of boiling was and i said "uhh freezing NO melting" WTF LMAO
I cannot tell you how many times I've heard this song
but this is the first time I've heard the whole song
when you notice this video came before the official music video imogen heap made
this song played in the school hallway, Marianne & Connell looking at each other. beautiful
HEART..... MY GOD THIS IS ART
This comment section only makes me angry.
IKR!
"When ur pizza falls on ground"
"When food is too hot"
"Lolzor auto tune"
"Mememememe"
"Skip to 99:99 for the best the other part is trash"
Srsly fucking hate all this.
+EverythingIsMacabre LOL SNL RUINED THSI SONG!! #PISSD #NOFUNALLOWED #RAZORBLADES
I feel like it's not stated enough how good this sounds despite lacking a backtrack of virtually any sort. All there is, is vocals with some kind of synthesizer over them.
Anyone else come here after watching Normal People? 😆
When you are 16 and your mixtape doesn't sell.
KermitTheFrog When somebody spoils what happens to Rem right after the scene the anime ended at.
Dear sister, by the time you read this…..
_Mmm what you say mmm, that you only meant well? well of course you did..._
***** Don't worry! I'll save you! *Runs to you but trips and falls in slow motion* "Mmm what'cha say"
I discovered this song very shortly after it was released, and I fell in love with Imogen Heap. I'm beyond annoyed with the fact it was bastardized by Jason DeRulo, and then later turned into a meme. People have no idea what they're missing out on by having this song completely ruined for them. It's such a beautiful and heartwrenching song, and despite everything I will always love it.
I have always unironically loved this song, it´s very fun to harmonize with.
im twelve now and when I was younger my dad and I listed to this very often. and today this song just came up in my brain. and this song meant a lot for me. fantastic song. I was like 4 to 5 years old. I'm like crying.
Hey I am a year late however, I was nine when I heard this song, it is deep in my memory
Her voice is beautiful, I hate how people turned this into a meme.
true. I still love this song and just ignore the memes so they don't ruin it for me.
After reading a bunch of comments I am struck with appreciation for the fact that I’m too old to know about any meme status to this song and just get to appreciate the fuck out of it
2:55 When the quiet kid speaks up to the school bully.
For does who didnt know the meaning of this song read this.
Heap has been reluctant to say exactly what inspired this song, but most of what she's said indicates that she wrote this song about the separation of her parents when she was 12 and her father finding a new wife. "Crop circles in the carpet" means the furniture has been moved out and all that is left are crop circle imprints. "Oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before" means photos have been taken down. All signs that someone is moving out of the home. Heap has called the images "a collection of childhood memories." >>
This is an a cappella song that Heap came up with after her computer died on her. With no computer to work on, she decided to try a piece of equipment she hadn't yet used to work on a song: a harmonizer. She used the processing device hooked up to her keyboard to come up with a melody, which happened very quickly around 2 a.m. She recorded a rough demo, which she faithfully recreated in the studio.
In 2005, this was used in a climactic scene from the season 2 finale ("The Dearly Beloved") of The O.C. when the character Marissa shoots Trey, who is trying to kill Ryan. In 2007, the song was used in a Saturday Night Live digital short with Shia LaBeouf that parodied the scene.
In 2009, Jason DeRulo sampled this song for his debut single "Whatcha Say." It topped the UK chart and reached #3 in the UK, earning Heap a nice little sum.
Thnx for the info :)
This should be top comment not meme shit although i love AND hate the jason derulo song
Don’t mean to gatekeep, but this song got me through my parents disowning me for being gay and a many suicidal moments all before 🎵Jason DeRulooooo🎵… but good god was his sample fresh asf👌🏽 I appreciated it later but at first i was pissed lol
I hope she’s sitting high on the hog with those top ten royalty checks! Hell yes!
I always thought it was about the start of the holocaust
Damn……
Thank you for providing this!!! Found this back when I was in middle school and as an adult it’s been in my head lately. I watched Ariana Grande sing it and was floored she knew it! Sorry for my word vomit. 🙃 Again, thank you! This is a beautiful bit of knowledge.
