The trick was they had two different hotlines….one was the paid game advice line. The other was a free number where you could talk with someone about new releases coming out and other news. Every once in a while you could try calling the free line and smooth talk them about the news, then at the end “hey I have one more question if you don’t mind…I’m REALLY stuck here…” and the pro would actually answer it for free if it didn’t take too long and they didn’t have to pull out the game from the shelf. I called the number (with permission, of course) a handful of times in the early 90's during the NES days. Even though I was 10, the counselors always treated me with respect, talked to me like I was an adult, and were patient enough with me to help me every single time. The calls usually took about 5-10 minutes. I have fond memories of those days.
If I remember right (this was over 30 years ago), you called and there were presets for the more popular games, like if you need help with Zelda, push 1, for Super Mario Bros 3, push 2, and so on. I usually played RPG/adventure games back then that were a little tough for an 10 year old, so I always had to wait until the end after all the presets for "everything else".
This was a fun nostalgic trip. The late 80's/early 90's were a magical time.

If you notice two of them were listed - as being former staff. Pretty cool touch.

Love the retro vibes in this. Brought me right back to my youth, calling in to ask about beating Bald Bull in Punch-Out!!!

I wasn't expecting that list to pop up after the game asked for my NES game. Overwhelming nostalgia.

Man this reminds me of the movie Retro Gaming called the Wizard. A strange little boy with his brother trying to go to California.

It’s really sad that seeing a picture of what he looks like when he was younger shows that we can’t stop aging because that’s true.😔

This call would have costed you about $6 in 1990 money, or about $14.50 today.
Of course, making the (very untrue) assumption the technicians would be this efficient and didn't put you on hold...😅

I love it when Nintendo gets silly like this and references mostly forgotten parts of their history. Between this, Starfy, and the new Famicom Detective Club, Nintendo's really been digging deep lately.
