It's pretty obvious by now, just how much I love trains in Japan. This vlog is dedicated purely to finding some hidden photography spots around Tokyo, specific to overpasses and railway crossings.
In this vlog, we visit one of my favourite areas of Tokyo and some of the busiest train stations in the world; Ikebukuro, followed by Yoyogi and Shinjuku for some level crossing shots of the trains. I was shooting photos exclusively with the Fujifilm X-H1, mostly paired with the Fujifilm 35mmF2 lens.
I thoroughly enjoyed making this vlog and am so happy with the results. From what started as an idea to explore an area I often saw from the window of my commute, I'm so glad I went to investigate further. You see, you don't have to have a Japan Rail Pass to enjoy the amazing trains in Japan!

I have loved trains ever since I was small. I could stay for hours in my city just looking at the trains going by when I was 3-4 years old and even recognized what train would come out of the tunnel just by the sound of it. When I was in Tokyo in June, i ditched my friend at the hotel and went to Tokyo station and spent hours on the Shinkansen platforms photographing and videoing the trains. I even took a Shinkansen to Ueno station and back just to try the different ones!
Loved this video and the Japan train series as Japan truly are the worlds best train country. Would love to shoot some trains in Japan with you some day! :)
    Cheers from Sweden

Hello Joe, and Elly, great to see your new video, and what a great subject, yesss trains of Japan, Ikebukuro is a place well worth seeing,
and the birds sounds as you leave or enter the station give a little life before moving on to your next adventure, and as for the train's yes Joe
your so right there something else.
I also love the stations they seem to have a little sound of their own, but oh so exciting, great photos, great video, the street shots are super, love the
lighting mate, and then the voice inside the train, took me back for a few seconds, brilliant work, and great to see you, be safe both of you.
I have just booked a flight to Thailand in September, and going to shoot the food markets, hope to get some video work done as well, but still
learning from you guys, you both rock, I see
Shu has been having a great time also, all the very best to some amazing people, and thank you all.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  Před 5 lety

Thanks, Clive! I always love the bird chirps and different jingles for each station. In fact I actually have all of the jingles in my iTunes as JR released a CD of them which I thought was hilarious! I’ve also converted them to ringtones which is a fun novelty haha. Did you know the bird chirps also serve as an accessibility tool to pinpoint exits around the stations for the blind?
Have fun in Thailand, we should go back some day soon; there’s a few spots in Bangkok and the north of the country I’d like to check out. One in particular is the Maeklong Railway Market - enjoy!

Amazing place and shoot! The opposite of the philosophy of a Japanese garden.

Very good video as always. Thank you for the video explaining your vlog gear as well. I just have a question. You shoot everything (VLOGs) on the GH5, right? What do you think on AF-performance. I know everybody asks this probably. I see some hunting here and then. Do you have a lot of troubles with that which makes you later throwing some of your shots in the trash?
The other question would be: Do you think the GH5s is good for vlogging as well even though there's no IBIS? Is it still useable for kind of "steady-shots" with a stabilized lens? The low-light performance is much better.
Sorry for asking so much ,-)

Hey Joe, I stayed in Ikebukuro a couple of years ago on business. Tokyo is an amazing place!

Another really nice video Joe. I have one question. When you're walking and talking the shot is very smooth, but the autofocus is hunting around all the time i'm also assuming it's the GH5S. Is it?
I sort of hope it is so it's so easy to identify the 5S from the 5, but hope it's the 5 to give some hope to the 5S.

You should go to Enoshima and shoot the trains there! The Enoden is smaller than the ones in central Tokyo but it goes through the middle of the street in one section and next to the ocean in another.

The train shots part, is that north of the station, or south.
I tend not to visit Ikebukuro so much, more of a Shinjuku/Nagano/Numabukuro person when I venture towards the ‘23ku’. (I live out Kokubunji/Koganei area)
Only time I really hit Ikebukuro is when I do some portrait workshops with my photography friends....
Maybe I should explore more for street shooting....
And yeah, I’m envious of your long trips here. My dream would be 6 months Japan, 2 months Malaysia, 4 months NZ... making do with 12 months per year in Japan. 🙂🙃

Have you been on Toden's Arakawa streetcar line? You'd enjoy it- lots of interesting shitamachi neighborhoods to check out and photograph in. Keisei's main line is good, too for exploring the eastern parts of Tokyo...Yahiro, Aoto, Machiya, etc. Great fun! Keep up the marvelous work!

Thanks for the tips! I hadn’t seen that streetcar before, but just googled and what a cute little system that is!

The Minami & Kita Senju areas are also good if you like trains/neighborhoods. Also! If you take the Keisei Line, you can visit areas like Yahiro, Machiya, Aoto and points East...lots of interesting non-touristy Shitamachi to get pleasantly lost in. Aoto Station is a must...it has a great statue of Strauss, complete with canned waltz music. The area around Nakano Station is also a good time, with loads of fine photo ops. Have fun!

Dear Joe, could you specify which part/from what side of the Ikebukuro station are the level crossings? Somehow I did a long walk from Shinjuku, through the Toyama Park and the around Takadanobaba (hehe) station, but all of the crossings were uneven. Will be grateful for a hint! Keep up the splendid work!
