Named my son Carter after #8 who was a Hall Of Famer on and off the field. Thank you Gary Carter for being a role model.

I was there in Cooperstown to witness his induction and was able to see him and shake his hand the next morning in the great hall. It was great.

Great catcher, great Mets teamate, great clubhouse leader and great for the Mets to have acquired him.

Gary Carter was my hero. I wish I could have been there for his induction. I got to meet Gary Carter in 1988 in Chicago. I was able to stay at the same hotel the Mets stayed in when they played the Cubs. The first time I met Mr. Carter I asked just to shake his hand. The other players mocked him because all I wanted was to shake his hand and not an autograph. I did eventually get his autograph that week, however, it was a true joy to just shake the hand of my childhood hero. Likewise, I got to meet Johnny Bench in the 80's and got an autograph from him as well. It is cool that Gary Carter looked up to Johnny Bench.

Unconditional love and respect brings out the best. Gary's words for his teammates were fine, but his words for his family were elegant. They came easily to him because he knew he was cherished by them.

@@justanothercollector63 … He should still be here with his family. Dust to dust. He’s now completely gone. I am glad that he is pain free now, but I don’t believe there is anything past these moments we live.

Was in awe of this guy as a kid. Him, along with Steinback from the A's inspired me to play catcher. I was also there, 10 years old to watch his 5 for 5 game as a newly christened SF Giant. I got the worst sunburn ever that day... never forget.

Unfortunately for Thurman he missed 10 years in the majors by a week. In order to be eligible for the HOF you must have played for 10 years and Thurman just missed it. MLB debut 8-8-69 died 8-1-79.
