Those are both really neat. With that wrench I was thinking that the Wenger would make a great tool to carry as part of a bicycle kit. They both pack a lot of tools but the wrench and the unique magnifying glass put the Wenger ahead of the Victorinox for me. Fun video!

I bought my Swiss Champ new in 1985 and have pocket carried it almost every day since. It has the half stop on the caplifter, a chisel, pen and pliers. No hook and pin though. It is very well used, the Stainless cross and shield fell off more than 10 years ago and left a little hole and the scales are chipped and cracked but it still does everything it did in the beginning and has saved my day many many times.

The Wenger Champ is a large 85mm eight-layer model that preceded the Tool Chest.
It was also sold as the Classic 28, and later as the Evolution 28.
This model could be regarded as the Wenger version of the Champion by Victorinox.

I’ve always heard Wenger’s are more robust but Victorinox more elegant.
Both are too much pocketful to me. I have always liked the dangly chain on Wengers. I like the tweezer and toothpicks of Victorinox. Wenger has better scissor until the spring goes.
The push down flathead on the Wenger is nice.
For me the magnifier and the scalers are a wash. The cut in the Wenger scaler is so you can more easily guide down the fishing g line.
The longer wood saw definitely goes to Victorinox.
I do like the file over the small blade.
What the heck! This is ‘Merica! I’ll take both. Don’t want to hurt anyone’s feeling.

I watched this when it 1st came out, but I was able to use both and I like tools from both but I prefer Victorinox's scissors. I always liked how Wenger had a File instead of a small 2nd knife. I am so glad that the Victorinox Sportsman and now the new Companion have small file. I kinda wish the spring of the Wenger could be put on a Victorinox scissor, but at least it's easy to find and replace a Victorinox spring. I carry a Leatherman with a Victorinox so I don't need a plier but I definitely always liked the Wenger plier. I had a Wenger with a plier growing up and I get nostalgia when I see 1 again. Both are nice tools and I definitely like both scissors over Leatherman scissors, but that's why I carry a Victorinox Rambler, a 2 to 4 layer medium Victorinox and a Leatherman Bond, Rev, or Knifeless Rebar. They covers most things that can go wrong in a day. I feel like I am naked if I don't have them all on me.

  • @hitchpost5822
    @hitchpost5822 Před 2 lety +3

Choosing between Victorinox and Wenger is mostly subjective.
I have always been a Victorinox fan ( the larger 91mm fits me better)
That being said there was a lot to admire about Wenger. They were more
of a risk taker when it came to innovation, it is sad they are not around to
push Victorinox a little to come up with new designs & tools. A couple of
points of info on your Wenger knife, the patent stamp on the screwdriver
means it has the patented locking screwdriver. When you put pressure on
the blade it retracts into the knife a little and locks the blade from closing
until the pressure is released. (probably the philips screwdriver also locks).
The cutout in the fish scaler is designed to help guide the hook remover
to the hook by threading the line through that slot. I have collected several
Wenger models just for there unique tools and designs. Interestingly Swiza
has some of the former Wenger people, it will be interesting to see what
new innovations they come up with.

I question how useful the Wenger wrench tool would be. I think that to loosen or tighten you would need to flip the tool over so that it bites the bolt head in the correct direction, but not have the handle fold up on you as you turn. In one of those positions the body of the knife would prevent the tool from getting anywhere near a flat surface where the bolt might be located. If the head of the bolt is not against a flat surface it might work OK. I might be wrong and would like to see a short video where you try it out.

It's wierd not having a date stamp on something. Every single part we make at work has the year and month at the minimum on it. Some things we even put a dot on the date stamp to tell what shift it was made.

Here is an interesting observation, I have tried to replace the tweezers & toothpick as both were lost. Ordering the easily available replacements online, results in both sitting proud of the red plastic faceplate. I can only think that when Wenger was bought out, spares for them were discontinued? Look after your tweezers brothers!

For me, Victorinox knifes are best. I prefer the Huntsman to go to the forest. It's not too big, but you have a wood saw in it (very sharp). And with the hook you can carry at least 50 kg (about 100 pounds). It will not break.. Swiss quality since about 1898..I still have my Soldiers knife (Aluminium) from 1985. It still works. And we used it daily in Military service..

Being a Swiss Army guy, I'd have to say in this head to head, I'd have to go with Victorinox.. The magnifying glass at this time is I believe is 8 power, while the Wenger is notorious for falling out. Both at this time had solid cellidor scales, but Victorinox takes it due to it having the secondary pen blade, as well as superior toothpick and tweezers. Plus the corkscrew is flouted, which was a change I would have preferred that Victorinox would have kept..

I've had Victorinox knives since 1995 and they've never failed me. Wenger knives haven't failed me either, but I have a personal preference for Victorinox. I'm not a big fan of Wenger's serrated scissors (huge downer), the lack of an edge on its awl, and that Wenger wrench I've never used either. The Victorinox pliers have been more useful to me as well (more precise), and IMO Victorinox's tweezers and toothpick are better too (because they're longer). I've found the ballpoint pen really useful over the years too (Wenger knives don't have a pen), so Victorinox wins by a wide margin in my opinion. On a 0-10 scale, I'd rate Victorinox a 10 and Wenger an 8.
