- The island of São Miguel which is nicknamed "the green island" is the biggest of the 9 islands of the Azores which belong to Portugal. São Miguel is interestingly enough the birthplace of my father and grandparents which eventually immigrated to Canada in the 1960's.

FWI, the building you thought was the City Hall is the Regional Government building. The Citty Hall is downtown, next to the City Gates and tbe Matriz Church. And you walked past several coffee shops while looking for a place to have breakfast. 🙂
