  • About Shell Top.
Shell Top is a small but naturally beautiful, undiscovered area in Kohistan, Dir. Located on a four to five-hour trek from the village of Jaar (also known as Biar), this place boasts the unique distinction of offering views of most of the villages in Kohistan, Dir. Additionally, the towering snow-covered peaks of Thaloon Zom, Kishwar, Jhukot, and Sandrawal, along with the entire Panjkora Valley, can be easily seen from here.
When the sun sets behind the Hindu Raj mountain range on the border of Kohistan and Chitral, the resulting scene is unforgettable. The sight of the sun dipping behind snow-covered mountains, vast fields of green grass, flocks of sheep and goats, dense deodar forests on the edges of the fields, and smoke rising from the houses in distant villages can enchant anyone.
Our elders named this place Shell Top. It is situated directly above the famous and beautiful village of Jaar, also known as Biar, in Kohistan, Dir. Jaar or Biar village is located after Patraak village when coming from Dir to Kumrat. Although the exact height of Shell Top is unknown, one can enjoy an expansive view of the entire Kohistan from here. In front of Jaar village is the area called Kehjoon, and beyond that begins the region known as Bajore. (This name is a remnant of today's Bajaur, as when the Pashtuns, with the help of the Mughal government, attacked Bajaur, most of the Gauri and Ghabri people were killed, but some families managed to escape and came to their Gauri brothers in Kohistan, Dir. Their descendants still live here today). You can comfortably reach Bajore by a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Beyond Bajore, there is an easy two to two-and-a-half-hour trek. The path is mostly level and smooth, making walking not difficult. Shell Top has no hotels or suitable places to spend the night, so be sure to bring food and a tent for the night. The local people belong to the Dardic lineage of the Gauri tribe and are simple, hospitable folks, so there are no security concerns. Anyone wishing to visit can go without fear, but they must be mindful of cleanliness. These areas are still untouched and lack any waste management facilities, so be sure to take your trash back with you instead of leaving it there.
