    Trying out a different way to cover subclasses starting with this video! Looking at diving into more Roleplay focused take on the subclass. Would love feedback to make these videos better. Let me know if you like the change up!

      I apreciate a lot that now people can explore the mechanics of the subclasses and at the same time learn to fit into the narrative of the game. Keep it up!

      Just stumbled on your channel looking for more roleplay focused subclass videos! Imo, too many focus on combat optimization and are missing out on non-combat focused gameplay. I’ll be watching more of these as my party branches into non-combat focused games, love the character ideas!

    I am playing the Rune Knight in two different campaigns. One thing you didn't touch on is that the side effect of becoming a large creature can have on battlefield control. You are covering more ground, 4 squares for large with a 5' reach influencing 12 squares surrounding you. Sentinel feat becomes monsterous; even Protection fighting style gives the DM a headache. You have advantage with Str checks, so grappling/shoving becomes a core tactic. Shove things to a prone position and suddenly, you and your allies now have advantage to hit. Battlefield control potential is as large as you become.

    Rune Knight is fun. I built a Duergar Rune Knight Fighter Urchin, initially to get to play a Kaiju Brawler like Jet Jaguar, using Tavern Brawler to turn set dressing into weapons and artillery. But looking at the MTF Duergar's now extraneous weapon proficiencies, I got an idea. Using Tasha's Customize your Origin rules, I swapped them out for Herbalism Kit, Tinker's Tools, Forgery Kit, and Poisoner's Kit. Xanathar's guide said you can use the Forgery Kit to make appropriate fakes with your other tool proficiencies, and Tinker's Tools are explained as something of a patch kit, letting you repair damage to objects. So I ended up having him be a bit of a con artist, dumpster diving and jury-rigging whatever he can find to the point of being barely functional, then selling it off for quick coin and moving on before it breaks. My DM even let me use my Herbalism Kit, Poisoner's Kit, and Forgery Kit Proficiency to be able to craft Potions of Poison. An uncommon magic item that looks, tastes, and smells like a healing potion or other beneficial potion, but when imbibed, deals an immediate 3d6 poison damage, followed by a DC 13 Con save vs Poisoned. While thus poisoned, the victim takes an additional 3d6 poison at the start of their turn and can make another save at the end, reducing subsequent poison damage by 1d6 and ending the poisoned condition after reducing the damage to 0. Now I'm just waiting to reenact the Iocaine Gambit from The Princess Bride.

    My group is planning a fairy tale themed campaign, and I chose Jack and the Beanstalk for my character’s inspiration. This version of Jack, after killing the giant, was cursed or somehow affected by its latent magic (my DM and I are still workshopping the specifics) and is in the middle of the slow and painful process of turning into a giant. He was ostracised and shunned by the people of his village who once hailed him as a hero, which caused him to leave in search of a path where he doesn’t have to be feared or hurt innocent people, which also gives great reason for having the Faceless background. Mechanically, he’s just a goliath, but the flavor is something I find incredibly interesting and unique and can’t wait to explore. I also really love giant mecha and kaiju fights and this is a pretty good gateway into D&D’s closest approximation.

    My character concept for this subclass is akin to shadow of the colossus. Where the colossi, in this case a storm giant, is a local deity who resides in a massive temple.
    My PC is a temple guardian in training. He gains his giant strength from fear and admiration of the giant. He learns his runes from his religious order (maybe a dip in cleric) to protect and defend the people from an outraged storm giant (using cloud rune to deflect damage and fire rune to shackle and damage the beast).

    Rune knight just makes me miss the Giant Soul sorcerer. Could’ve easily been a sorcerer that focused on being a frontline fighter, and then they could’ve made the fighter more of a fighter focusing on various spell-like buffs that could be combined like the maneuvers of the war blade and sword safe from 3.5. They missed a chance to treat runes like eldritch invocations and provide you with even your own set of rune magic like elemental damage and defenses

    If you play a variant human or custom lineage you can get polearm master and sentinel by 4th level which gives you a lot of battlefield control. Especially if you can find a way to have enlarge cast on you.

    You hit the nail on the head with your analysis. Giant’s Might is your least interesting feature and yet it’s the only one that scales in power as you level. A whole tune subclass would have been a ton of fun but for whatever reason that’s not what we got.

    I think you underestimating the Potential of the Rune Knight, especially if you are comparing it to the Eldritch Knight.
    Rune Carver is certainly the more interesting but Giant Might is still very good situationally. By no means is it flashy but consider the out of combat utility being able change your size can have. Vertical obstacles are less of a problem, races with the Powerful Build trait can move pretty sizable obstructions.
    Then Runic Shield at 7th Level is "fuck you" to a DM who crits your allies. Its not quite as strong as the UA version (something I lament every day) but potentially negative enemy damage is almost always a good ability.
    As for the Runes themselves, lets really talk about it. The fact that they are tied to the Fighter's CON instead of INT like the UA opens up a great deal of flexibility that the Eldritch Knight just doesn't have. In a game that allows feats, even if you don't get past level 10 the passive Rune abilities give you a number of different ways to play in the same vein as Warlock. You can play a jack-of-all-trades and suffet very little for it.

    • @binolombardi
      @binolombardi Před 3 lety +1

      I agree that this subclass is quite potent, but I think you may be downplaying the Eldritch Knight a bit. Almost every spell that an Eldritch Knight “should” pick doesn’t use your intelligence stat anyways.
      The “should” spells would be any reaction or bonus action spell. Spells that can give benefits without limiting action cost are high priority too, like find familiar.

    • @chacepassmore6474
      @chacepassmore6474 Před 3 lety

      @@binolombardi I agree, but rune knight still overshadows eldritch knight in my opinion. Your weapons grow with you. When a weapons size category is large, the die doubles. Triple for huge. Quadruple for gargantuan. Plus you can literally pick up a large creature and throw it, or even grapple a kraken. Just sayin' haha

Rather than say i want more spells like a wizard think about what benefits I get by going large...... hint: grappling
