  • There are little pink pigs, ferocious hairy tuskers, and all manner of pigs in-between. There are pigs in steamy rainforests, dry savannas, and snowy woodlands. From humble beginnings in the jungles of Asia, pigs have become one of the most successful mammals on earth. Our film travels the globe to celebrate their fascinating lives.

      There is no reason whatsoever human beings need to eat other animals at this point in time. We now know enough about nutrition & the vegetable matter containing the nutrients we need to feed our brains & bodies so we develop well & properly making it no longer necessary for our species to consume the flesh of other living creatures. We can now breed & grow plants much faster than animals to accommodate the needs of our body's & brain's optimal development at this point in human history. It's also less costly to the environment to raise & nurture plants for food than it is to raise & nurture animals for food. In addition, the plants can be continually harvested but the animals can be harvested only once. The expense to the environment is much higher, as well.

    Some outdated info there, hippos have no relation to pigs, they are related whales. Hence, peccaries are a sister family to the true pigs of the Old World, so calling peccaries “pigs” is fairly accurate, they are the closest relatives of the suids and their shared characteristics are due to divergent evolution, and not convergent evolution, like with dogs and hyenas, where hyenas are closer to cats.

      @Dr Boom Firstly you seem to think the entire world will wake up one day and stop eating animals. That would never happen. Right now there is a gradual trend away from eating animal products, as the demand lowers, so does the supply. The number of farm animals will slowly drop down, as the demand falls. The farmers won't breed them if no one is buying their products.
      Secondly farm animals do not breed naturally. They have their breeding controlled. The vast majority of males are castrated. Only the ones with desirable traits are kept intact and their sperm is harvested. The farmers artificially inseminate the females. Certain breeds like Broiler chickens, Turkeys, and Belgian blues cannot even breed naturally because of their enormous size. And the males in the dairy and egg industry are killed shortly after birth as they cannot produce eggs or dairy.
      Lastly Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction: www.independent.co.uk/environment/mass-extinction-life-on-earth-farming-industrial-agriculture-professor-raj-patel-a7914616.html
      By eating animal products we require more land. Land required to feed 1 person for 1 year: Vegan: 1/6th acre, Vegetarian: 3x as much as a vegan, Meat Eater: 18x as much as a vegan: www.pnas.org/content/111/33/11996.full

    • @jhunt5578
      @jhunt5578 Před 4 lety +2

      @Dr Boom I wrote that assuming that you were talking about any farmed animal. Do you consume farmed animals?
      In the case of overbreeding and invasive species, its complicated. We are ultimately to blame for such destruction. Other techniques can be used such as sterilisation, catch and release, re-wilding. Some Vegans think we should treat other species like other nations, they have there own ways and culture. If another nation invades and means to destroy another that is fair grounds to use force to stop the invasion. Veganism is not pacifism. I'm fine with killing pests if all other avenues are exhausted.
      Hunters seem to hide behind this "righteous" notion of being environmental protectors. When it seems that hunters just enjoy killing animals and eating meat, and like any carnist they throw out an excuse to justify their actions. Except with hunting you have a moral grey area to defend yourself.

    • @jhunt5578
      @jhunt5578 Před 4 lety +2

      @Dr Boom You're appealing to nature which is a fallacy, and wild pigs come from domesticated pigs brought over by us humans. The natural world didn't create them we did. And if you mean to assert that humans and our actions are a part of the natural world. Then you undermine the common definition of natural, in that sense everything is natural. Thus claiming that "the natural way is the best way" is redundant because everything is natural.
      There is a company working on sterilising darts. With that you could wipe out enough pigs. Wild horses who are pests for the livestock industry, they round the horses up and they live in lots or sanctuaries. Re-wilding has been proven more effective than hunting in places like Yellowstone. If all of these methods fail, and the pigs are causing net suffering, then I'd agree to culling them. But again, hunters I've spoken to simply enjoy killing animals and eating meat and happily hide their animal abuse within a grey area.
      Treating animals as other nations is metaphorical, we treat other nations with rights and respect (or at least we should) In this sense wild animals should have rights to their habitats, and we should only invade them with sound cause. Pigs destroying a habitat could be such a cause. Sorry what is the difference between instincts and have a "way"? There is an end goal to every intentional state. Animals have wants, needs, desires and interests. Ultimately those interests come down to suffering and wellbeing. If a being suffers and has an interest in survival, there is no rational argument to say the being should not be taken into consideration.
      If we define equality in the only sensible way. Which is a granting of equal consideration. Animals should be treated equally. Pigs have a similar cognitive intelligence to that of a 3 year old human child, we do not deny rights to unintelligent human infants or the mentally handicapped. Animals may not be able to reason or talk like you and me - but like both of us, they can suffer.
      You completely dodged my question btw. I hate when you carnists do that. "Do you consume farmed animals?"

    • @jhunt5578
      @jhunt5578 Před 4 lety +2

      @Dr Boom Appealing to history is also a fallacy "existed for thousands of years". Claiming green grass grows best in soil because its evolved to do so is a separate claim, you claimed that it is the natural way in the context of hunting pigs. Pigs we released as an invasive species to an ecosystem which escaped from domestication and some humans now hunt. Those 2 claims are very different, one is an evolutionary biological necessity and one is a human made issue and action.
      Does humankind and human actions = nature in your view?
      Your claim is ridiculous. You cannot assert that human influence within in ecosystem is good, because its natural. 1. You can argue human interference is not natural. 2. If human activities are natural, then so is everything by such a definition. 3. Pigs overpopulating is a direct cause of "natural" human activity, so are invasive species good?
      What? I did not claim that re-wilding proves sterilisation effective. I simply listed techniques other than hunting. Re-wilding is an option and so is sterilisation and so is capture and relocation. These techniques should be used before culling.
      What hunters enjoy and eat is completely relevant. People always want to attack the grey areas of Veganism and not the core. Because the core principles cannot be logically argued against. So people like to hide in the grey areas... and in most cases when they still oppose the core. Every hunter I've spoken too, still eats animals from farms.
      Your distinction between "having a way" and instinct is redundant. All you are stating is that humans can survive better than animals. That has nothing to do with the intentional states of humans and animals acting towards the same goal... which is a desire to maximise wellbeing and to minimize suffering.
      What are you talking about? I never said "no animal should die because all animals want to live". I said that animals deserve equal consideration when it comes to their interests, when they're interests are similar to that of a human who has rights. If you think I'm wrong then please explain the difference between humans and animals that justifies the difference in moral treatment?
      I do not oppose animals hunting each other. 1. They are in survival situations. 2. They may be obligate carnivores. 3. They have no notion of ethical philosophy. If we tried to stop predators from hunting the predators would die, and the ecosystem would collapse. (Not the case for humans).
      Human carnivory is the leading cause of environmental destruction. This whole problem with wild pigs is our fault. We have wiped out more animals than any other animal which existed. Right now we are in the 6th mass extinction named the anthropocene. Our involvement solves nothing, ideally we would re-wild every place we've touched and anti-natalise invasive species.
      Provide a consistent argument that granting pigs rights makes no sense. Explain the difference between humans and animals that justifies the difference in moral treatment?
      I already explained that culling pigs is like treating them as other nations. I am not a pacifist. I have no problem bombing the fuck out of ISIS or al shabab. If pigs are so invasive that they will destroy an entire ecosystem, then I would treat them in the same like. I'd like to point out, just so we are clear, I'm proposing that we render invasive species extinct. You seem to want to keep them alive, so you can continue to get enjoyment out of hunting them.
      That was incoherent to me. I'm asking if you buy animal products. Because Veganism is morally concerned with the core issue of avoiding animal exploitation, harm and death as far as possible and practicable. You have brought up a grey area where killing animals actually helps animals. If we cannot even agree on the fundamentals of Veganism, why are we discussing moral outliers? If your wearing leather jackets, and eating hotdogs at sea world, then hunting invasive species is the least of the problem.
