I was actually one of the artists that worked on the Monopoly game for the Switch, I designed almost the entirety of the "Halloween" theme and a good chunk of the "Amusement park" theme. Not really the coolest property to have worked one, but it was still a great experience.

While it is fun to see Scott showing all those old school board game video games, he is only scratching the surface with them; yes, I know he is doing for the humour while showing and reviewing how these games play, but there are tons of really interesting board games now that have video game versions, Monopoly is like the board game equivalent of Tiger Electronics; you look into the Switch and you will find pretty damn good versions of Catan, Pandemic and even Carcassonne.
Gotta say, I prefer to play Root in digital form, it is a lot easier to teach it thanks to the digital version considering how convoluted it can get due to all the factions and their rules, but the absolute best video game version of a board game is without a doubt Gloomhaven, now I don't have to take half an hour setting a single quest, nor do I need a forklift to move the damn box!
Games with a lot of freedom but complicated rules like Monopoly benefit from being contained in a digital space with a referee that does not break. Card games like MTG and UNO I also like the rules guided solely by a mindless and instant moderator. A game like Munchkin, where cheating is allowed until caught, I don't think would lose any charm without the opportunity to cheat
For sure. I see his point with the games he chose, but there are many great boardgames avialable for pc and consoles. Especially during the pandemic board game video games have brought me hours and hours of joy. And with online play or bots, you have always someone to play with. Because soemtimes I want to play a game that none of my friends really like. And in the past that ment I just didn't get to play it, but now I just play with people online.
I just wished Root allowed for more than 4 people like in the physical version.
I love the fact that Scott has props for even the simplest jokes to make the punchline hit harder. Like there was zero reason for the scene of them dumping all those dice out their pockets, or all the damn mustard bottles, but DAMN IT do I appreciate the unnecessary effort 😂

I remember The Game of Life on PS1. It was bizarre with these little animated shorts with whacky shenanigans occurring for a few different spaces. It was honestly pretty entertaining.

I think an episode on original board game video games would also be neat. There are so many things a computer can do that is impossible in a physical medium. Armello is a great game that has all the spirit of a boardgame, while using the strengths of a computer game. Gremlins Inc. is a great game that uses an interesting method of moving around the board, but would be incredibly finnicky to play in real life. You could even consider classic tactical games like X-Com, Fire Emblem, or the Might and Magic series to be board games.
Hell, there are even some adaptations of board games that do things that would be incredibly difficult in real life. I remember one version of Risk that allowed players to plan their moves, and have them all execute simultaneously. Some also take card games, but do things you couldn't do in a physical game. Faeria is a card/board game, where you can create units, modify cards in your hand, generate new cards, and modify the board, which is theoretically *possible* but certainly not feasible in real life.
Also, if you do end up doing a "video game board game" episode, also look into the modern resurgance of board game adaptations. From DOOM to Dark Souls to X-Com to Frostpunk to Slay the Spire, there are tons of board game adaptations of video games that are actually decent.
Slay the Spire isn't out for retail yet, were you able to play an early copy? I might be getting it for me and my GF when it drops, but i'm cautiously optimistic that it will be worth it
What's exciting is maybe home brewing a co ok climb or a race or a climb where you meet and fight. Only problem I see is having enough counters, it'll look like the video, you'll be spitting out teeth just to mark one extra armor point
I tried the game ROOT based on this comment. I got the mechanics figured out but insofar the rules are like cricket. I feel like without a rulebook I could watch 10 hours of gameplay and not decipher a single rule.

Edit: I Googled it, & after some searching, I discovered it's an old Canadian videogame console from the late 2000s, that only sold 70,000 units. Now, I come from Canada, hell I was born in the same city the company's headquarters are located in, Mississauga, but I've never heard or seen this console. I'm sorry, but I don't think any of us can relate.
I hope you have the best of luck archiving a game for a system no one outside of Canada has ever heard of. I mean, who knows? You might be able to get it playable on PC when there isn't a emulator out there that can run Game Wave games from my knowledge.
