The costumes for this video were designed by Colleen Atwood, who did the costumes for several Tim Burton movies (Sleepy Hollow, Sweeny Tod, etc). So you are right on the money, it's that esthetic.
Great point, thanks! I'd just add that Tim Burton also had such a foundational effect on the goth culture that eventually birthed emo that there's absolutely a lot of his perspective still in there. There'd kinda have to be, in a way, which is not at all a bad thing, artists learning from and building on other artists. But it's interesting to know that there's also a much more direct connection.
My son is in his 30’s, my daughter is in her 20’s, my grandson is 12, and they all love this group. It’s ironic that two days ago my son took his 12 year old son to his first concert in Dallas to see this group. My grandson still can’t believe he got to see them in person. 💕💙❤️🔥😊
Little know fact: Evanescence, fall out boy, panic of the disco, My chemical romance, and paramore are most popular group within the black community i grew up in.
The Black Parade is a rock opera centering around the character of "The Patient". It is about his passage out of life and the memories he has of it. "The Patient" dies and death comes for him in the form of a parade. This is based on singer Gerard Way's notion of death appearing to a person in the form of their fondest memory, in this case seeing a marching band as a child.
👏👏👏 Gerard Way, the lead singer is also a comic book creator. He won the most prestigious award for his series the Umbrella Academy which is also on tv. My Chem is one of 3 bands who are the kings of EMO music. Danger Days is my favorite album so I would check out Na Na Na and Sing.
That also comes through in the depth of the lore behind this rock-opera-style concept album. All of those characters you see in the video are real, having a story and a role in the world created. The woman in the dress and gas mask, for example, who you see first when she meets the Patient and then momentarily standing beside several other people with a sign that says "Starved to Death in a Land of Plenty", is Mother War.
i like that you mentioned the Tim Burton vibe. Their vocalist Gerard did some concept sketches for their costumes for this album/rock opera (he earned his bachelor of fine arts in visual arts and cartooning before starting the band and is a comic writer/developer as well) and then reached out to costume designer Colleen Atwood to create them. she’s worked on a number of Tim Burton films.
This song gives me goosebumps every time. I do like the songs but I don't listen to this song as often as I should have because this song makes me sad. Don't ask me why, it just does.
Welcome to Emo! My youngest daughter turned me on to this song, and it absolutely slayed me. Gerard (lead singer) has an interesting, yet incredible, voice. Your take on this was pretty spot on, actually. I told my daughter she needs to watch this and then comment; she will do a much better job she was an Emo teenager when it came out, and the remains are still quite evident, lol!. It certainly is both a song and a video that wakes you up and makes you go "huh?! I loved watching you react, I think I had the same face the first few times I listened to it. It's on the current playlist, and am 62!
Omg REALLY MCR!! I love them!! And yes the Black parade is about death. This whole album which the song is about twll the story of the guy in the video called "The Patient"
You totally got the video and meaning the first go! So many people miss it. The woman you called princess is "mother war" from the album art off the record
AB they just released a new song called The Foundations of Decay... it's the first song since the band got back together. You should check that one out! ✌️
I have been a rabid fan of MCR since 2005, they got me through hard times and better times. I’ve seen a few people recommending some more songs from The Black Parade era or earlier, and I am going to recommend something later. Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na). The album it’s from has a different sound, the video is different too. Hope you enjoy!
@@thatbzguy916 House of Wolves is underappreciated. My Chem basically created an impeccable big band jazz song like NBD and almost no one noticed. (Probably because it's on an album where they also recorded an impeccable Queen song and an impeccable Motown song and an impeccable Broadway number, etc., etc.)
The name of the band is My Chemical Romance!! The patient in the music video is Lukas Haas!! I didn't find that out until about a year after I started listening to them!! They are awesome!! Welcome to the dark side, AB!
Check out Helena from them which is also a well-known one from them. Also Teenagers, Blood, and I'm Not Okay. They were gonna have a tour but covid got in the way. You know they affected lives when my friends from middle school all the way to grad school were all planning to go 😂
So the lead singer, Gerard, wrote a comic that he then turned into a Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, it’s very tim burton vibes for sure So I wouldn’t be surprised if Gerard also directed all these video clips 🤷🏻♀️
I love them! I highly recommend from them The Ghost of You, Helena, Mama, Cancer, Famous Last Words, just to name a few. Though I can listen to their albums start to finish.
I've been listening to My Chem for a long ass time, and you're asking them good questions that I never even thought to ask. What is the black parade? I really never thought about that 🤔
Great reaction...thank you doing this! Truly hoping you do Mama off this same album. It's a continuation of this song from the perspective of the man who has died when he was in the trenches of war (you can hear the bombing at the beginning of the song). Though the live version is good, please do the actual cut from the LP.
To me, growing up I saw it as a son that is thanking his father for what he taught/left behind, and even if it was not properly expressed, by the son, at least in the after life, the son hopes that the father knows he was the true MVP
Just gonna say My Chemical Romance are, along with Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and a slew of other groups, the Fathers of Emo-Punk music. It's not that they sound like Twenty Pilots, it's that many bands of today like Twenty One Pilots are heavily inspired by them. Big love to MCR and glad you're checking them out!
@@wesleydvt they def were in the 200s lol. They leaned more emo punk/punk rock than groups like Dashboard Confessionals, but they were def in the genre and established many of the emo aesthetics.
@@wesleydvt I can see a case for Green Day having some emo songs but not being an emo band/being more of a pop punk band, but PATD was firmly in the emo/emo punk scene with A Fever You Can't Sweat Out.
His father did not take him into the city to see a "parade". They saw a funeral march with a drummer. This is why his father tells him one day he will be walking in his black parade and to be good, look out for people and carry on.
Great song by a great band. Only knock I have is about the comment of the views. Just because it has a lot of views means almost nothing. Nowadays kids spend so much time doing nothing more than watching their favorite songs over and over on CZcams and the likes. Not like older great music. But I digress, like I said they are a great band and it’s an awesome song.
Yes! Emo and Kpop are my favorites and I love to see your reactions! This song is still so iconic to those of us who grew up listening to this genre. I also really like their song Helena. Also the whole The Black Parade album used to be on constant repeat for me.
There are some videos of just his vocals. I highly recommend it. I’ve been a fan of mcr for almost 18 years (since I was 7🤣). Gerard Way (lead singer) has some of the most unique vocals. The light behind your eyes is a beautiful one. You’ll need tissues for that one. The ghost of you is also a top pick for me.
As much as MCR is part of all EMO's music playlist, they have said many times that they are not an emo band...lol But my cold black emo heart says otherwise 🖤
In all the reactions I've seen to this song, you're the first one who got the overarching theme of the song/video so fast lol "the black parade" is referencing a funeral procession (think of all those black cars and the hearse)

This song has one of the best first thirds of any song ever. In the same company as Bohemian Rhapsody
"What in The nightmare Before Christmas is going on here". 😂🤣😂🤣😂
1) A "Black Parade" is a funeral procession. 2) The guy in the hospital bed at the beginning died and began wandering the land of the dead.
The opening piano notes just automatically brings me to tears.
