The guy playing in the left Pt Shashank Subramanyam was a child prodigy and now a legend. He is self taught flute(venu) player. Later he learnt music from legend Dr Palghat K.V. Narayanaswami (Carnatic vocalist) and legend Pt Jasraj(Hindustani clasical Vocalist). He applied those learning on his flute and developed his style and he is now legend in his own right and unique flute player.
Just to add some facts he got a scholarship at the age of 4 years which was meant for 14 years old students. He started performing on stage at the age of 6....

Indian classical music, instruments, and classical dances are very underrated in the outside world...even if I am an Indian and have been listening to these instruments since childhood, I still make the same surprised faces that korbin and Rick just made, every time I hear it.

The raga Hamsadhwani in which this Song is composed (dedicated to Lord Ganesh), is a derived scale from The parent raga Shankharabharanam (equivalent to the western Major scale). You can try singing this raga by yourself by omitting the 4th and 6th note from the Major scale. Just do basic patterns using the notes on a piano and you can produce a similar effect to Hamsadhwani when it's actually sung with gamakas.

In flute, the scales shall be changed with the intensity you blow it. The amazing thing Shri Subramnyam ji done here is changing those scales without breaking the breath and without making us feel he is changing his blowing intensity with no much action from fingers (he shifted two scales) is legendary.

Korbin hi, i have a request
You are allocating just 1/9th of the screen space to the video being played which makes it very difficult to see what is being shown in the video.
Although i understand that these are review videos it would still be great to the see the video being played in a more larger screen space where on can clearly see the video too along with your reactions.
    Just an input.
I have seen hundreds of your videos and i have to always readjust my screen to zoom in the video while watching your reviews.

Generally in Indian music, all the instruments, including the drums are tuned to the same pitch - usually that of the singer's voice or of the main solo instrument, when there is no vocalist. Sliding notes are THE hallmark of Carnatic music, check out the 22 notes in Indian music, if you have not already. There is a sudden spurt of videos on the subject on CZcams. And oh, the singer's pitch is relative : it is the pitch at which they can cover maximum range over multiple octaves.

The problem is that all the crapy music in the world is famous but the most complex, comprehensive, most artistic and most soulful divine musical form that is the CLASSICAL INDIAN MUSIC is not famous or known to the 90% of the world. At least we Indians have that luxury but very few of our classical artists are either famous (like Zakir Hussain, he is great but there are many Tabla maestros like him who are even better but no half as famous) or are rich.

Actually you are reacting to, mostly last part of any Indian classical music. As Kaushiki Chakravarti told you in her interview, it is only last part that is just 5/10 % of any Indian classical concert. The earlier part which is 80 to 90 % is real spiritual & creativity in the given framework of Raga & tala(Rhythm). Of course you require deeper understanding of Indian Music to appreciate the beauty of it.
