Mary Elizabeth Frye wrote the poem “Do not stand at my grave and weep” to console her houseguest, a young woman, Margaret Schwarzkopf, for her loss of her mother.
She never published or copyrighted the poem. She said “I thought it belonged to the world; it didn’t belong to me. I still feel that way … it was written out of love, for comfort.”

Who the fuck in their right mind thought "i am the soft star that shines at night" was better than "I am the day transcending night"
In retrospect it's completely in-congruent with the rest of the poem.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
    I am harvest's golden grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
    Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I am not there. I did not die.

I’m very proud with that! This song reminded me of my math teacher, he died of having a heart attack. This song washed away my pain and worries, and help me to move on!

I sang this in a choir a couple years ago and I asked the pianist if I could record her playing the accompaniment, so I could cover it online (it was easier and less time consuming than learning it myself). I didn't get to do it yet because of the hardships of life and bad timing, but I still have it on my list of songs to do. The reason is because I planned on covering it for someone very special to me; a person who was the closest thing to a father in my life. He is gone and I miss him a lot. Today, I was going through a junk drawer and found a funeral card for a relative of mine (also a spectacular person). The words on the card were the words to this poem. I had no idea because I was pretty young when he passed away. I probably didn't even know it was a poem at the time. It makes me happy that those words were chosen for him though. This song is so lovely.

They are in everything we experience, they are always with us.. if we let them be.. "do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die".. they live on in us, in our memories

    Absolutely beautiful!!
Though this poem/song has been attributed to a number of possible authors, it does not diminish its beauty in any way! So grateful to the dear friend who sent it to us when my wife's sister passed away yesterday!
    From Daily Poem:
"This beautiful poem is probably one of the world's best known and best loved, but the identity of the author remains unconfirmed. There are several variations in print, but the version that appears here was published in The Gypsy magazine in 1934 with the byline of Clare Harner of Topeka, Kansas. The poem has also been attributed to Mary Elizabeth Clark Frye, a Baltimore housewife; Stephen Cummins, a British soldier; J.T. Wiggins, an Englishman who migrated to America; and Marianne Reinhardt (no information found). It's also been alleged as a Navajo burial prayer. Sadly, we may never know who gets the credit for these comforting words."

Oh, please go read them. You’ll be so blessed. Just Google “do not stand by my grave and weep“.
My knowledge of the mechanics of poetry extends no farther than high school English class, but I was struck by the uncommon AABBCC structure. I was surprised that the rhyming pattern carried through to the second verse (stanza?) because it felt so different from the first. The answer is in the number of sentences in each.
But who cares about the structure? The words are breathtaking.

I did not like the morose tone of this performance. It is supposed to be uplifting that you did not die but instead are in all of the beauty that God provides and you are now with Him. I prefer the other versions such as Katherine Jenkins that are uplifting, instead of depressing, as was the intent of the original poem!
