    I will never forget when he came to our conservatory for a masterclass. In the end he played the slow movement from Rachmaninoff's first piano sonata. A phone started ringing halfway through. Trifonov stopped playing, angrily stared at the audience - then reached into his pocket and turned it off.

    The piano world seens very fickle to me. Comment boxes suggest the fans have already moved on to other younger pianists they consider ‘the greatest ever’, and weirdly, ‘gods’. Opera lovers are much more loyal to the old (really old) and critical of the new.

    • @f52_yeevy
      @f52_yeevy Před 2 lety +7

      I think that both the new and the old are equally appreciated. While the first one I’m has the excitement of novelty and of seeing in real time the development of great pianists, the other has more reverence towards the “legends”.
      In fact, older pianists such as Horowitz, Zymerman, Pogorelich, Gabrieli, Arrai etc. are known by most pianists today and are recognised as some of the greatest to ever live.

    not much time for anything else, that's ok, I mean, he's fully committed and that's cool, perhaps that's why he's so good at playing the piano. If it's a passion your spending your time on, time becomes irrelevant, you don't feel hunger, thirst, boredom, or the need to do anything else. It's being in the zone, and fully committed to one thing, trying to be the best at that single thing. It's being exceptionally good at something, and the interviewer asking this question shows signs of mediocracy just like the standard person who can't excel at anything but merely do their jobs to put food on the table. Unexceptionals interviewing exceptional people basically.
