The Central Video ident is based on one of the Central idents in use at the time when it debuted in around 1991. It remained in use until 1995, when both this company and the Pickwick Video imprint were rebranded as Carlton Video the same year, with Carlton Communications having purchased Central Independent Television in 1994 and Pickwick Video Group in 1992. Central Video in case you're wondering was Central Independent Television's video releases division.
As a child and for many years since, I always wondered what the "thing" in the VCI animation was meant to be. Now I've just realised it's abstract art of a CRT TV set (I suppose it had to be abstract, owing to the limitations of CGI technology in the early 90s). The Central ident and jingle always give me a warm, fuzzy feeling - it was one of my two ITV regions (the other being Yorkshire TV). :)
Could you live in an area and receive two ITV regions? (e.g. overlap). If so, how did it work? Was one service on number 3 and the other on 5, 6 whatever. PS: I am from the Meridian region.
I've Seen This When At The Beginning Of A Tots Tv Video Featuring The Peacock Episode And It Also Featured The VCI Children's Promo Which Included Magic House, Christopher Crocodile And Thomas The Tank Engine.
The Central Video ident must be the only time people outside of the Central region heard the jingle. ITV ended pre-programme caps in their 1989 rebrand. PS: Central was one of my favourite regions for idents. They were really always imaginative. PS: I was from the TVS/Meridian region.
I recently got a copy of the second Playbox video. It had the older Central Video logo on the box but on the tape itself it just had the Video Collection logo. Was there an earlier version of the Central Video Ident or was the version shown in this clip the earlier one? The Central Television logo was also cut off on that tape
I know that Central once had an Ident vhs logo that appeared in the opening of my Gran’s Rosie and Jim Volume 2 vhs tape which was released in 1991 that I still have now and it’s a logo that’s just titled “Central Production” with a blue background and the original central logo before the one in this video and there’s no music and the Ident’s shown on the screen for about a minute and a half I think, so I think the Central Production logo is probably one of the first ones used, perhaps it is the original I’m guessing.

I'm trying to guess where you could live that had both... Nottinghamshire, perhaps?
I'm from the West Midlands so it was always central for me, that central logo still remains my favourite TV logo to this day!

IMO, the best ident tune Central have ever had. I wish they had used this for much longer.

The Inspector Morse Box Sets had this one, the VCI logo reminds me of the 1990's when I had the series on VHS ( I have the Collection on DVD now).
Yes, this Central ident has been shown on TV too, just without the 'video' underneath.
Well that wouldn't surprise me, because the Central Video ident is actually based on one of the Central idents in use around that time.
This VCI ident used to scare me :/
I've got this on playbox volumes 4 & 5.

What about those who lived in an overlap area with Central and another ITV region (especially the Granada, Yorkshire and Anglia regions)?
