  • An exceptional example which offers an exciting chance to own a true '70s British icon. A unique car, it represents simply the most outstanding original MGB V8’s we have ever had the pleasure of owning in almost 30 years of trading. The car has covered just 71,700 miles from new, has had only two long terms owners until recently, and comes with full history from new.
LHJ289P was supplied on the 1st of March 1976 by W. W. Webber LTD of Basingstoke, Hampshire to a Mr F.E.W Hine who kept the MG in regular use until the late 90s. The car comes with the driver's handbook and service book still in the original British Leyland service pouch provided by the supplying dealer. This documentation shows the car was regularly serviced by the same dealer up to 26000 miles in August of 1979, Leycare job sheets also show in extensive detail what was covered in every service. From this point on the car was maintained by Early's Garage of Axminster, Devon from whom we have a stack of invoices covering work totalling thousands of pounds spent during the '80s and '90s. In 1982 the owner treated the car to a full stainless steel exhaust system travelling as far as the Midlands for installation to make the V8 Engine sound as beautiful as you would expect.
Today the MG retains a remarkale level of originality, the bodywork is untouched, still finished in British Leyland's Sandglow Yellow as it left the factory, also sporting its Autumn Leaf ribbed cloth interior which is now beautifully aged and offers an insight as to how well the previous owner has loved and cared for the car.
In 1998 the MG changed hands and was then kept in dry storage for 16 years until being recommissioned in 2014, at this time work was carried out to include new tyres all round, a braking system was overhaul, the speedometer was rebuilt, carburettors serviced, tuned, and balanced, two new headlamp units fitted and new rear wheel bearings on both sides. From its MOT in 2014, LJH289P has covered less than 200 miles up to its most recent test in February of this year.
As you would expect of a recently recommissioned car, the MGB drives fantastically on the road, the V8 engine feels strong, the four speed gearbox is tight and the overdrive is effortless and smooth. Under close inspection the car presents equally as well as it drives, the bumpers look almost as new, the original V8 alloy wheels are in good order and the gorgeous paintwork appears original, with very few imperfections and still retaining a lovely deep shine.
Being one of only 742 rubber bumper V8 models produced, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a V8 MGB with this impeccable provenance and originality.

Just this weekend I drove a 1976 MGB GT to "Caffeine and Machine", was such a great experience.
Wasn't a V8 but it was still brilliant.

I'm not sure that the overdrive switch was ever on the gear knob.. at least, not until the later MGB's with the 'new dash'.
I think that the MGB GT V8 always had it on the wiper switch ... which gave that column stalk rather too much to do and could/can lead to some "interesting" side effects, especially when it is raining (!)

No, previous, the Overdrive was on the right hand side of the dashboard, where someone has put a clock!
