It's so awesome to see that your STI has been treating you so well, especially after 5 years. Those years must've flown by before you realized it! You make a very good point in saying that it's old technology, and I agree 100%. The STI itself is a perfect blend of what the car enthusiast scene is about, while feeling less primitive because of the updates to the tech inside and out that is evolving around us. To be honest, I'm glad that you ended up managing to keep it and remember why it is you poured so much of your time, money and love into it. I always look forward to seeing updates and being a part of this journey, enjoyed your review!
Thank you! And yes, I am glad she is still in my hands. Everytime I grab the keys and walk out to it, it's a reminder how amazing it is to own something like this.
When the VA came out in 2015, everyone was so upset since there wasn't a new motor or many updates. Everyone called it a dinosaur and boring. Now that it's 7 years old, people are changing their minds about it. Saying they wish new cars would feel this way and the old tech and "mechanicalness" is what is lacking in most new cars. Funny how things change over time haha.
@@Scoobyfreak86 Another reason why it's that much more unique! It feels like out of the majority of the popular Japanese sports cars that have been released, facelifted and/or brought back, the WRX/STI has always been on top. Even if it goes through the cycle of animosity and people refusing to accept change, the VA chassis sold pretty well! I'm still learning a lot about Subarus in general because I grew up without one, and always had an interest in the EJ motor but never thought to buy one. But watching yours progress throughout the past year or so has made me get so curious and now everything you preach in these videos are super relatable and make even more sense. I also look back on your older ones for guidance if I ever thought to do a mod you already had posted about, so thank you for that!
I’m 4 years in with my 2018 STI and feel the same way. The connection to the car and the road is just something you can’t get anymore from other brands.
Found your channel not too long ago, and I have to say, it’s refreshing to see a Subaru owner treat their car so well. I had a 2012 WRX that I treated like a queen that I lost last month due to an accident, but I am picking up a white STI tomorrow and I couldn’t be more excited! Looking forward to seeing what your next steps are with this car. I can’t wait to start adding personalized pieces to mine
I can totally relate with the drivability aspect. My wife got a 2022 Ascent and it has quite a few advanced safety features that help assist your driving. I find myself a lot less focused while driving her car then my little cruze. They only feature I like is the automatic vehicle hold; which when you brake and hold your foot for a second it will stop the car from moving. So you can take your foot off the brake while setting in traffic or in a drive through line.
Appreciate your honesty and the time you put into your videos. Makes a difference especially newly purchasing a 2020 STI. Cheers man
I am glad my videos help! It is truly why I do this. Cheers!
Thats a beautiful car. Clean and all the mods are just awesome.. not overly loaded its just perfectly done
Thanks to you for all your hard work and we appreciate all you do for us to learn and enjoy your videos, salute 🙌 👍
I’ve been trying to avoid the videos of the STi’s here on youtube, and have tried to make myself not like these cars. But dude, your videos always make me want to get one. Your car is so fucking clean!
Great video Chris.
I love that car. I bought my car 2 months ago searched everywhere for an STI could not find one at all
i got my sti in December, first ever manual car, and i dont know if its because its still new or not but every time i turn back and look at it, it puts a smile on my face. And with your videos ill soon be buying some stuff for it, some new tail lights, the iag aos, a kartboy short throw and the AP. Love your videos and your info on the STIs help alot. Thanks for the content and keep it up !
Quite surprised you almost sold it. I don't think I'll ever sell mine (only had it for 4 months though). The STI and Evo 9 are by far the best driver's cars I've owned.
I have a 2004 wrx non sti with 239k miles haven’t blown a headgasket knock on wood and it’s been great to me the whole ownership, although I have stage 3 on it pushing 350 crank and 310whp with a street tune and a catless downpipe, sounds great and performs great good video.
350bhp isnt 310whp unless its a really high reading dyno
Can’t wait to get my own
Everything you are saying resonates with me to a T. I’m expecting my first child this year, I have a Jeep Wrangler that I bought new off the lot which is great and fun but it’s just not me it will never be fast like my old turbo ep3 I had. It’s not exactly a family friendly vehicle but if I’m gunna get a family vehicle I want something that is sporty and fun that I’m gunna look back and not regret when I get out of it. I may have to take an sti for a test drive because I’m really torn between the golf r, sti and tesla model 3. I guess time will tell haha as always great video!
I can relate! It always sounds like a good idea at first and the thrill of something new and comfortable always sounds appealing. But after you truly spend some time in a fairly "boring" vehicle, it sets in hard. I had my Jeep for 2 years and it was a "rough" time haha. However, in doing that, it allowed me to appreciate the STI way more than I ever have before. It made me realize just what I was looking for and didn't anything crazy or insane. Simplistic and fun to drive.
All 3 are great options! All very different though. Here is my .02 cents....
Golf R - can be crazy fast with some simple mods. Very nice place to be and very nice interior. Exterior is a bit soft and handling tends to leave a lot to be imagined. Does not feel as connected to the driver.
Tesla - Very quick off the line. Very comfortable. But, it looses it's appeal after some time in it. My buddy has a 3 performance and I have had the opportunity to drive it on several occasions. It's a great car, but I could never do it as a one and only car. It would be a great commuter if you had something manual and fun in the garage.
STI - Out of the 3, most driver engaging. No electronics tog et in the way. All mechanical feeling and raw. However, slowest out of the bunch (on paper), old tech, and lacks the overall refinement comparing to the other 2. BUT! That isn't what you buy an STI for. I prefer a better driving feel/experience than sitting on some nice plushy cooled seats.
Could you make a vid on every maintenance you should do and at what mileage like what mileage coolant flush and trans flush you should do
Funny you should mention that. I have that video on the docket.
Hey Chris, I’m picking up an sti in the upcoming weeks. Would you be able to make a video on the first steps you would take if you were just buying one? Or maybe somethings you regret doing early on in your ownership of your car. Thanks, keep up the great content!
Hey man. Congrats! There nothing in particular that I would do other than do an oil change at 1k. Otherwise get the car washed, corrected, and coated asap. No regrets with mine!
Been following the ride for some time now and is my fav STI, def gave me big inspiration for some of my mods. Keep it up!
Also, I was browsing the channel, do you have a video or plan on making a dedicated one on your work bench/cabinet setup!? I’m looking all remodeling my garage as well and love the husky bench🔥
Thanks! I’ve been planning on doing a garage tour update soon.
Man...watching this is making me want to get a Used STI too...
Bought a 2020 WRX brand new and lasted about 4k miles (couple months) before I went and picked up myself a 2021 STI for the last year of the EJ and hydraulic steering. Owning a WRX made me hate all the new technology feels and knew I had to jump on the last 90/early2000s driving feel.
Can you make a full video of what you did, what you liked and disliked, and your whole experience with your WRX hatch?
This video my whole journal on my wrx forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2466554
Just got my 2021 STI. I’ve done a few body mods already but what do you recommend for first engine mods? Definitely looking to be reliable first, power second. I also put an AWE touring catback on it so there’s that. Thanks for the info. Love the vids!
Aos and cylinder 4 cooling mod!
When I got my wrx, the only reason why I picked it was because the dealer was giving me 6k under msrp. Or else I would have gotten the STI and now I feel like I should have gotten the STI because I'm doing mods like getting a bbk that I would have been happy with since it already came with the STI.
And that is totally ok! The wrx is a great car overall. Fun to drive and modify. People have a budget and sometimes the STI is just a bit out of reach. I have certainly been there before.
But yes, the STI has some nice performance upgrades from the WRX. The transmission being the biggest selling point for me. It is easily one of the best feeling gear boxes out there.
I just got a 2018 WRX two days ago and I love it but I’m learning how to use a manual transmission. Always thought it was going to be simple but it feels like I’m learning how to drive all over again lol. I love how solid your build looks. Also, what specs are those wheels? I’ve been frequently seeing them on Subaru’s but I haven’t figured out what they’re called. Thanks if you reply!

I’m going this Labor Day to look at a 2017 WRX STI premium dark subie blue 60,000 miles 3 owners but no wreck getting good deal. Love yours #subieblue
Hey curious about your experience with the Fortune Auto 500's. I'm shopping coilovers and am leaning towards the HKS Hipermax S, but considering the FA's also. I have zero experience with coilovers so I'm just going on what I hear from others.
Go with fortune. They have been fantastic.
4 years with my Sti. Only thing that it gave me was the O-rings in steering rack gear box was leaking. Other than that been having fun with it. Have you thought about upgrade your clutch and flywheel?
No need until I go for more power.
Hey, been looking around but failed to find your exact emblem mounting kit for wrx mesh grille. Can you link me which exact grille, emblem, and mount did you use? I absolutely love how you did your front grille 10/10.
czcams.com/video/uGQniW0JoiY/video.html
I'll make 4 yrs with mine next month. April 2018. Stage 3/flex coming soon. 🏎💥💨
Also.....you haven't sold it because you know that it's basically irreplaceable with this current market.....
i have a 2017 subaru wrx NOT sti been haveing nothing byt problems. But i LOVE the car it self lights on at 4800 miles 12,000 i had studding where the car would lose power as if it turned off in a way. also as of yesterday my transmission died at 27,893 miles. Guess what im getting at should i trade it in for a civic type R ...keep the car or get a sti starting to lose hope. Thanks for takeing time to read this !
I’m sorry to hear of your troubles. Did you buy it brand new or used?
Go drive a type r and an STI. See what speaks to you more.
@@Scoobyfreak86 bought it at 4400 miles i dont beat on it and mainly drive it on weekends. thanks for getting back to me man love the videos you put out. Will prob try the sti or type r after i get this transmission fixed :)
Awesome man! Got a couple questions if you can answer
1. Have you experienced any oil issues with the car, apparently people have issues with the WRX and STI. What have you done to prevent those issues?
2. What you think about the 2022 WRX and thoughts on the new STI if there is any?
No oil issues with my ej. Doesn’t burn oil or have any seepage. You’ll see those kinds of issues on older gens with more miles. Moreso on examples that haven’t been maintained properly.
Wrx specs are pretty disappointing. However, the fa24 has huge tuning potential. They are going to be monsters once the aftermarket world gets their hands on them.
There isn’t much on the STI yet. I did a video on it about what it could potentially be. czcams.com/video/tuu49Vfe88o/video.html
I really like the underbody kit where did you purchase that is that from Subaru?
czcams.com/video/4a-sCt07zCU/video.html
Would you consider the new 2022 WRX or the new STI for that matter? Honestly I'm keeping my 2020 series white STI for ever lol
Honestly, it hasn’t even crossed my mind. Not crazy with the direction they went with the wrx, but we shall see what they do with the STI.
@@Scoobyfreak86 I think the only thing that the new gen has over the old gens is the FA24 motor hopefully Subaru learned their lesson and give their fans a more solid engine to build upon.
My Sti is in the body shop because a seagull dropped a shell and dented and scratched my hood. It’s only been 3 days and I miss it so much already these vids don’t help 😂
I hear you. I get antsy when I don't drive it for a few days as well. The 3 months it was hibernating was a true test of my will power.
@@Scoobyfreak86 I don’t think I’d ever be able to go that long. Have you ever thought about auto cross or tracking the car
Not this car. It's too nice to put it through that kind of abuse. If I ever got into tracking, I would get something simpler and cheaper to beat on.
@@Scoobyfreak86 ya same with me I want to track it and rally it but I just can’t see the paint and everything get beat up
@@Scoobyfreak86 This is kind of a strange comment to me - this car is built to withstand the rigors of hard driving isn't it?
Maybe it was already mentioned but curious how many miles are on it?
36,413
Would you have considered getting an Evo X?
If I was in the market when they were still being produced, yes.
I want to get one but people say they are so unreliable and waste lots lots of gas please help your thoughts 🥺
czcams.com/video/3kw5hqYGL5E/video.html
does your state require smog and emission tests?
Just emissions
How many miles do you have on it?
37k currently
Sti or nothing 🤙 dealer tried to get me into a wrx as well. I didn’t even go along with the idea
Haha, people don't realize how different of a car it is if they never driven one. Very different experience, despite having so many similar design elements. The WRX is a great, great car. If I was commuting far and wanted something more comfortable, I wouldn't hesitate to get one. But, I wanted that true driver engagement that the STI offered. Still thankful I made that choice 5 years later.
@@Scoobyfreak86 Totally agree with you! My first car was a 2015 WRX and I loved it and had thought it would drive the same as the STI. Now I am a PROUD owner of a 2015 STI and there’s a world of a difference between the two!
@@Scoobyfreak86 exactly. It’s always been a goal of mine to own a sti. Almost been a year with my 21’.
There’s so much difference between the two models beneath the surface that people don’t understand haha
I’ve had my 21 sti for 6 months and a few days ago someone rammed a shopping cart into my back bumper, waiting for my taxes to come in so I can spend 600 bucks to have it repainted>
Ugh. People. Sorry to hear man.
Scoobyfreak86 yeah a lot of haters out there, but whatever it comes with owning anything nice unfortunately.
I think you would have had instant regret if the sale had worked out.
I still can’t believe Subaru went from this clean body style to the 22’ body style 🤮
It should be interesting. BUT! Keep in mind... everyone hated the VA when it came out. Now look at it.
@@Scoobyfreak86 it’ll look good with a wide body kit to get rid of those ridiculous fender flares
I actually find the new body style intriguing and I’ll bet ppl will make ‘em look pretty dope. I love the look of my STI though and I can’t imagine selling it
Dude put a bigger turbo on it. Why not it's not your daily. You like modifications. keep going. You talk like the car is done.
