I see them open hopper roll through Kaukauna Northbound loaded. They must come back headed south empty. I always see the full hoppers sitting in the Neenah rail yard. The consist comes out of the Neenah rail yard
That same inspection train came past my garage about a month ago. The horn sounded odd, so I grabbed my video cam and caught it as it went by. (Cedar Rapids Iowa)
Hello Steve. That equipment puts a Gel on the tracks just like they do for looking at a Baby in the womb when doing a Sonogram.Well this baby are the two tracks, Gel is spread on the rails and the transducers will send and receive the sonic pulse. It's looks for all types of defects or possible problems in the rail. I also see some laser equipment. I have had to tour of how this is done on the Loran Track Geometry cars, and the test cars that do this type of sonic work on the rails. lasers are used to look at the profile of the head of the rail when doing grinding. Sonogram or Sonic track testing provides a Deep look into the Steal of the rail. Cracks and Fissures and other Anomalies will show up. Good close up you did. The device with the Yellow Warning Stickers, That is the Laser unit. the big box house a High Def Camera and the gel dispenser and Ultra Sonic Transducers. I have seen another device that marks the rail with a problem with color paint

Very interesting if I had to do over in life on my career I may have chose R..R over Truck driving if I could have made Locomotive Engineer When I Trucked I Usaully dressed like an Loco Engineer Cap striped overalls and boots with the adjustable strap I loved it the only other job maybe U.S. Secret Service but very difficult to make it to The Presidents Detail that takes seniority and a lot of training and a spotless background 😎😎😎
Read up on how railroad employee’s are treated these days & you’ll be glad you’re doing what you do. Used to be different but took a turn for the worse a while back.

Good stuff. It looks like they would have used a newer locomotive to pull that fancy equipment around.
That would be a bad use of resources. Maintenance of Way trains, trains such as this, & locals always get the worst, hand me Downs type equipment. Even NS Research/Geometry train doesn’t use frontline locomotives.p, it uses GP-38’s last time I saw it, it looks good (cleaned & washed), but that’s it.
