Minffordd Level Crossing

  • Ffestiniog Railway Double Fairlie Steam Loco No.10 "Merddin Emrys" in brown and Ffestiniog Railway Penrhyn Mainline Hunslet Steam Loco "Linda" in green both make a racket as they head for Minffordd station, having both just come from Boston Lodge Halt. This crossing in Quarry Lane (aptly named for being in sight of Minffordd Quarry) has four traffic light wig-wags. This is the only crossing with this type of light, other than Marshbrook LC and crossings on the Isle of Man. The one alarm stops after the lights have ceased flashing, and there are strange looking electrical boxes on the back of some of the Keep Crossing Clear signs (or should I say Cadwch Y Groesfan Yn Glir?). This crossing was updated to an AOCL in the mid 1980s, and it originally had gates which can be seen from the old gate posts. It looks like the crossing hasn't been updated since, judging by the faded signs. The STOP when lights show signs have no image of a wig-wag and instead say 'AUTOMATIC CONTROL', as well as the same in welsh. The crossing keeper's house is right next to the crossing and has a funny shape. In the background in the first shot is the Porthmadog Bypass, which cut the Ffestiniog Railway in two in 2011 whilst a new bridge was built carrying the railway over the bypass. This will be upgraded soon with tilted wig-wags and these lights will be gone. Hopefully I will get one of them and some signage according to one of the workers on the railway.
    Type: AOCL
    Route: Ffestiniog Railway
    Location: Gwynedd, Wales, UK
    Train 1: 0:40
    Closure 2: 1:23
    Train 2: 1:55

    I worked on the railways in Britain for nearly fifty years , it was always a bone of contention open crossings like this . It's not so bad on a small line like this . But on a main line , we had far to many accidents from people chancing their arm and crossing in front of a train . As far as I remember there are about 200 left in use . Manly on lines that do not take a lot of traffic . But the plan is to get ride of all of them and have automatic barriers , so no stupid impatient drivers find them selves wrapped round the front of a loco. As far as people living close to barriers . They tell me they do not notice the noise , I suppose one gets used to it ! Crossings are dangerous, if abused. I have seen to many people with their body parts rearranged from been hit . So take it easy and do not get inpatient when the lights turn red in front of you . they are there for a reason and that is for you do go home at the end of the day !

  • @keith6400
    @keith6400 Před 7 lety +3

    In my opinion these traffic lights do not comply with the traffic regulations because the "wig wag" lights are flashing alternately on a vertical axis. They should flash alternately left and right. The reasons for this are alternately flashing lights on a vertical plane tell drivers to slow down not stop. This is designed to cater for colour blind drivers, a large sector of the population.

    • @Nathan_A_RF
      @Nathan_A_RF  Před 7 lety +4

      The fact is that red flashing lights mean stop, although on motorways in the UK, they do flash horizontally with amber lights flashing vertically. Either way, red means stop anywhere.

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 Před 7 lety +1

      Totally agree with you stop does mean, stop, anywhere. The reality is although UK roads are geared up for almost everybody including colour blind persons. Colour blind people cannot become railway locomotive drivers, pilots or other industries where colour vision is required. Problem in the example on the video is that colour blind people just do not see those lights as red they need additional clues to the meaning of the lights.

    I thought that the bells at an American railway crossing were loud. Our trains are required to blow their horn/whistle well in advance of a crossing, with two long blasts, one short blast, then one long blast as the train fouls the crossing, like the Morse code for the letter "Q."
