Music teacher reacts: JINJER - Pisces (Live Session)
You guys asked for it so here it is! Jinjer is a pretty killer band and upon further research, I noticed their live videos are just as sick. Don't be so distracted by the killer vocalist that you forget to pay attention to the killer musicians in the band. Super unreal talent here!

Max Morton is their producer. He is finally receiving the attention he deserves thanks to Jinjer. He is the genius who came up with the idea of putting distortion in Tati's headphones so that she hears herself as if she is in the setting of a live show. That's why she sounds in a live setting just like she does in studio. He is also the one who paid the $300 to mix their first song after he heard them. He gambled on them, because he said he saw something very special in them. He and they worked so hard to get where they are. They're like the Rocky of metal, coming from abject poverty in a war torn country with no hope of escape. Music was literally their one and only shot.

This song is one of my favourites of all time. So freaking good.
The rest of Jinjer I've checked didn't grab me as much as this one. But they are indeed super talented.
As for how the hell did your channel grow so fast, I think the answer starts with 'Night' and ends with 'Wish'

  • @ZachComa
    @ZachComa Před 4 lety +5

This was the first song they did with their newest drummer Vlad. The song was already recorded and on an album with their previous drummer, but Vlad added so much to the song with things like the ghost notes you noticed that the band just had to record it for the world as his debut. Vlad is also an amazing guitarist and came up with some of their newer material on the Micro/Macro albums.
As far as their writing process, the guys write the songs in advance and give demos to Tati to write lyrics to. They don't even know what she writes until she records, hell sometimes she doesn't even know, she just comes up with a lot of it on the fly as she's recording. Her lyrics are pretty deep and always have a lot of meaning with clever metaphors.
Tati is one of the best in the business. She has amazing vocal control and they use backing vocal tracks live that she can harmonize to quite well (usually, 95% of the time). Sometimes you'll see her pull out her ear monitors and the harmonies suffer occasionally when that happens (Resurrection Fest live).

  • @donnyarmstrong9559
    @donnyarmstrong9559 Před 4 lety +13

As mentioned elsewhere, I too feel its about time that someone looks at this song beyond our dearest obsession that is Tatiana, and addresses just how tight this band is! They make her sound great!
Don't get me wrong, Tatiana draws us in with her beauty, her angelic/demonic voice, but the boys in the band give her the legs she requires to be able to stand there and make us all aware of this awesome band known as Jinjer.

Fun reaction and great analysis - subbed. Seen them twice and they are sooo amazing on stage. I'd highly recommend some concert videos.
That studio setup is just epic in the most understated way - It looks so much like someone said "oh, hey this room is free, let's record there" and yet all the little details of subtle but complex lighting to create all those highlights, costuming vs. decor (Star Wars' black and white costuming theme replicated by the musicians, echoing the ANH poster). The way the gold filter really contributes to the jazzy feel in the beginning - I still remember my first time seeing this thinking how this could be played at a casual but classy jazz bar somewhere before the growls started haha. I feel total awe and respect for the folks who put the visual aspect of this together every time I see it. And then there is the song which is so amazingly great.
The funny thing about the doubled vocals on the growls is that they actually kept Tati's vocals more moderate in her medium growl range or a bit lower, and I suspect that was because if she was going into her low growls a lot like she frequently does when performing Pisces in concert, it would have been a lot harder to match up the two tracks so they sounded right.
I'd recommend all of their official live videos. Not sure if you've heard the live versions of Who Is Gonna Be The One and Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev - both take the growls way lower. Perennial live at Wacken is also epic and showcases the flexibility of everyone with another epic display of ghost note skills so good I've seen people reacting to it think they are using a shaker. :)

This performance right there is one of the highest displays of musicianship that I have ever heard, especially the non-growl bits. Every single little thing is spot on, and the song is not in a 4/4 notation (?) as most other songs are, which I can only assume makes it even harder to play cause it's not a "natural" timing to play on. Yet it just flows. It has just the right amounts of everything. It's just brilliant.

I am so glad someone pointed out the drummer!!!! He is phenomenal !!!!
It’s such a subtle part that non drummers don’t notice it. It is one of the best drum performances out there. The set of skill set you need to play it like he does is off the charts great. So as you nicely communicated,,,,EVERYONE NEEDS TO OAY ATTENTION TO THE DRUM PART”. People should listen to the drum part specifically on their own

They decided to do this live video for it at the time both as a video, but also because Vlad (the drummer) had joined recently and played the song differently than the recorded version (all that ghost note work etc), so they wanted the video to include his style instead of the original recording. Its also why they added a lot of that stuff like vocal harmonies, to replicate the original recording.

Comments on the backing vocal tracks were spot on. More and more we’re seeing musicians doing small gigs, clinics, and performances at music booths using backing tracks tied to a click track in what ever Daw they just happen to use. In fact, you mentioned Jason Richardson (all That Remains) not only uses the click track with backing instruments, but uses midi commands within the tracks, to change his presets during a show.
Glad I found your channel, great post.

I think they deserve more attention, though. Go back and listen to the first section again. It starts with 7 beats, goes to 3, then briefly to 4 beats before the transition. As a long time Rush fan and high school drummer. the rhythm changes in this song really make me happy. Great reaction. Like most people, I usually watch reactions to this song for the eye pop at the first chorus, but this reaction was just as good in its own way.

And each time I listen to one of their songs, I find something new. That is a rare thing to find. Only other examples I can think of are Jaco Pastorius' Reza/Giant Steps/Reza of his Invitation (Live) album, and Nigel Kennedy playing the Gypsy Chardash live - saw him live recently too. When I first heard Jinjer (it was actually an older song "Sit, Stay, Rollover") I knew I found a band that was amazing. My musical talent is... lacking... virtually non-existent... but I do really get into lyrics and lyric writing. I have yet to find a single song from Jinjer that I don't love. Every single member of Jinjer has such amazing talent and I love that every song they do.
As a side note I heard in one interview that the whole point of this live video for Pisces was actually to show off Vlad Ulasevich as a drummer as he was the most recent addition to the band and I love that you kept going on about him since that is what they wanted in the first place.
So glad I checked out your channel, keep up the good work!

  • @RalphCahill

Some beautiful things about this. This song was originally recorded on their album King of Everything with their previous drummer. The album was released just before this current drummer came on. They decided to re-record it with the new drummer and his interpretation of the drum part adds many more ghost notes than the original drummer had and it's more the better. Also, in the original recording, the high vocals during the bridge were layered with the harsh growl vocals that were almost at the same record level which kind of obscured the impact of her beautiful high vocals. I love that they didn't do that for this recording. It should be noted that when they do this song live during vocal part in the bridge she does the growl vocals because personally she thinks she'll bust the high notes at the end of the phrase in the moment and would rather not worry about it.

You know, something I've never heard any reactor mention or even seem to notice are those badass pre-bent notes of Roman's in the chorus. I only play a little guitar, and it's been a long time, but that seems to me like it would be _really_ tough to do so consistently every single time like that.
Am I missing something and that's easier than I think?
Also, _thank you_ for having a good ear and/or just a clue about how studio production works. Of _course_ her voice is layered in places. It's plain as day! Not just on the cleans, too, but on the screams as well. No, that doesn't mean she can't really scream like a beast; clearly she can. I'm so sick of people who either think it has to be all 100% natural, or just an effects pedal, and whoever thinks the opposite is crazy.
Yes, this was a live studio session, but it's still a produced, studio-quality finished track, complete with effects, layering, EQ, compression, etc. Hell, there's even an entire extra guitar track recorded by Roman that sounds like a _Wurlitzer_ that 90% of people never seem to notice. Or maybe they think it's magic? I dunno.

I was surprised you didn't mention the time signature changes until the end. With a deep musical breakdown that is usually the first thing to grab the ear. They use like 5 different time signatures through the song. But you heard those ghost notes. Vlad is killing it with some of those beats so soft and harmonic. It is truly eargasmic. Jinjer takes pride in their progressive metal backbone and you clearly have an appreciation. And lastly let's talk about Tati. So beautiful in her look. So beautiful in her clean vocals. And amazing growls, which are real and not doctored. Yes this is a live studio recording with post production added to augment the sound. It in no way falsifies the performance. Watch their live performances to become a believer.

So if you'll notice the part in the bridge where she does the slur at 11:08 in your video, she does that slur right on point with the bass melody going up and down.. perfectly. I never noticed until someone pointed out in another reaction video. I ingest more of this song with every listen. Sooo good!

Funny thing about their purpose for making the video in the first place, it was to feature their new drummer, but it's exploded on the interwebs for other reasons, as you know.

  • @Shinobi_sac
    @Shinobi_sac Před 4 lety

Not sure if it is even realised by many, but in the description of the video it actually states this:
"I believe we had this idea to record a new version of “Pisces” when we first rehearsed the song with Vlad Ulasevich as a new drummer. His drumming makes the song sound really different. So we finally had some free time last winter, we went to Istok studio in Kiev, did a live recording and shooting, then added over some extra lines, like a few backing vocals and guitars, then Max from Morton Studio made this new magnificent version of mixing and here we are - Pisces video. I hope you will enjoy it!"
So yes, they openly admit to vocal layering, but this video in particular was designed to highlight Vlad (the new drummer) and his interpretation of the song, so focusing on him and his usage of ghost notes in particular is not a bad thing to do!
    Love the reaction!

    Yet another great video.
Nightwish - Yours is an Empty Hope live at Wembley, you really need to check it out. Floor has a little surprise in the chorus.
Now I'm off to look up the term "ghost notes."

😊...I like the intro... Jinjer is awesome.
2:19...it's cool you mentioned the instruments, really it's what I hear first when I find a new band (as I did with Jinjer three years ago) and then if I'm into that, then I get into the vocals. 👍

And you, sir, have just earned a sub!
Would love to see you react to Kamelot - Elizabeth (the live version from the One Cold Winter's Night concert).
    Cheers!

Actually, this drummer joining was the whole reason they re-did Pisces. Dude nails it. Recommendations for songs:
    - Unleash The Archers - Awakening (official music video)
    - Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars (Sonic Pump Rehearsals)
    - Ne Obliviscaris - And Plauge Flowers the Kaleidoscope (Live in Colorado)

If you want to see some BADASS technical drumming check out Arïen van Weesenbeek of Epica. Mind-blowing! In particular, look up "Universal Death Squad" for which you can find the official video, official drum playthrough video, and live drumcam video. Simone Simmons also is another clean neoclassical metal vocalist fronting Epica and a joy to listen to alongside the other fantastic musicians!
For another mixed-vocal female singer, have you reacted to anything from Toronto-based The Agonist? They started with Alyssa White-Gluz (currently of Arch Enemy) and have had Vicky Psarakis up front for a few years now.

Master of Vocal Layering? Hansi from Blind Guardian. There's like 12 different layers of vocals on every track. It's fucking awesome. Also, this song very much reminds me of Change (In the House of Flies). So many similarities.

what I know about this session from their interviews, yes there is layering, The producer that did the audio for the video was the same from the album, so he had the vocal takes from the album laying around, he did the magic of layering them with the live take in the video, and boom, done.
and yes, if layering is auto-tune, I guess then I autotune my guitar takes -_-... because you know it's not like there's 2 takes of my rhythm and then 2 of my lead layered to make it feel more like a wall of guitar.
The guitarist always gets glossed over, but, having learned this song, one, yes, it's actually easier to play a 7 string than a 6 (vertical extension so I have an extra 3 descending notes in any position)
However, if you've ever played this song, The stretches are monsters especially on the extended scale of a 7 string. The position is a bit awkward for a few of them, the runs down when you kick the stomp box are incredibly hard to get clean. you're going from above the octave to open in a single run, never an easy feat to do cleanly at that speed.
also any time you transition from something that heavy, going back to clean and sounding good doing it, it's an incredibly hard task, usually as a guitarist we take a moment to reset, usually it's a long ringing note or chord then to clean, not just *heavy*.. *boom*.. *clean* that's not how we normally approach it, because the chord shapes that work clean often do not work with high gain, and a lot of structures that sound good with a lot of gain are boring when you play them clean.. it's a different vocabulary, it's like speaking English then switching to speaking Ukrainian mid sentence. (pun)

Just a quick note. The correct terminology in the world of youtube reactions is that if you're not hearing the song for the first time it's not a "reaction" anymore, but a "review". I've seen many reactors on yt put in a "reaction/review" if they've heard the song before :)
