    August of 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. So I wanted to make a video about that. That was a bad idea...
    What do you get when a Classically-Minded historian ventures about 2,000 years outside of their comfort zone? A mess. A well-intentioned mess is what you get. BUT a mess that we can learn from! So join me as we dig into the aftermath of the Second World War to analyze the origins of the Cold War and the decolonization of European Empires.
    SOURCES & Further Reading: "The Cold War" by Gaddis, "The Wars of French Decolonization" by Clayton, "British decolonization, 1946-1997" by McIntyre, "The Cold War's Killing Fields" by Chamberlin, "The Cold War: A Very Short Introduction" by McMahon, and "Crash Course European History [Parts 42-47]" by Green.

    Some clarifications:
    North Africa did of course see conflict, the pacific did get occupied - even the places that *didn't* (eg: India) still paid for the war. Damn double-negatives.
    That weird Romania-Hungary-Russia border is a holdover from WWII. The border lasted until 1946 and was changed in 1947. Later in the video you'll see the more familiar borders.
    Indonesia declared Independence in 1945 (Like Vietnam), but the Netherlands didn't withdraw until 1949, hence my mention of '49.

    Growing up during the Cold War was... difficult. Not to say other generations had it better, but it definitely changed the way you thought. It was drilled into you that nuclear war was inevitable, that the leaders on both sides were too stupid to understand what they were playing with. At any moment, you would hear the sirens or the radio/tv go emergency broadcast. And *that noise* meant the missiles were already on their way and you had 10 minutes left. Any moment you could hear it, and everything will be dead...

It was moorish naval knowledge that led the Portuguese and later Spanish to innovate in the field and sail across the world unchallanged for two centuries. Go to notably the south of Portugal and maybe also Spain and you'll see many places with Arabic origin of name, notably the "Al-" prefix. This also applies to wording, I rest my head in an almofada when I go to sleep. I study algebra at school and go eat alface with alfarroba for lunch. Al al al.
      Then yeah, when becoming democratic was hip, we stayed isolated from Europe as the last authoritarian western European states, which the Portuguese dictator Salazar put to words: "Orgulhosamente sós", meaning proudly alone.

    In all seriousness, this was a huge topic to cover in 14 min but he did a good job covering the basics. A mention of the non-aligned movement would have been nice, to understand that some countries wanted to go their own way and not fall into the orbit of either superpower.

  • @Soundwave3591
    @Soundwave3591 Před 3 lety +34

    2:24 some mention must also be made that despite what Anime tries to tell people, the Japanese weren't exactly angels before or during the War, and the US wanted to ensure the Militarist elements (you know, the ones who STARTED THE WAR in the first place) had been purged from power or otherwise removed from office. This was compounded by the need to establish friendly relations in Asia once it became obvious that the Chinese Nationalists were going to lose the Chinese civil war, and leave a bloc of Communist or Communist-aligned states stretching from the Baltic sea to South East Asia.
    Hence when people ask why the Allies didn't clamp down on nationalism in Japan like they did in Germany, the simple answer is "politics." The USA had more than enough regional allies in Europe to stand against the USSR that a shamed and cowed Germany could be accepted (and even then, by the mid-50's West Germany was already rebuilding its military) but the same could not be said for the Pacific, so they needed a re-armed Japan on side.

    The Suez Canal crisis itself deserves its own video. It is an interesting event in regards to the history of America, France, and the UK's foreign policy. I've noticed that prior to the crisis The United states had a tendency to defer to what Britain and France wanted. Iran is an example of this. As is Vietnam surprisingly. This was partly spurred by the fact America's intelligence agencies were poorly developed and weren't the behemoths they are today and the Red Scare permanently crippled America's intelligence gathering for decades by kicking out most of America's non European history experts. The Suez Canal Crisis was one of the first times America really put its foot and made it clear that it called the shots on the world stage. France and Britain also learned from this event. Britain learned they were no longer a major power and retired to being America's close ally. France learned they were no longer a world power and were subservient to the whims of bigger countries. So they worked to preserve what was left of their empire by tying their former colonies in debt to them. America learned you can't always trust your allies and you have to keep tabs on them to ensure no one does anything stupid.

    You know the scariest part about this kinda history is... How close it is. I was born in the year the Yugoslawien civil war ended. My cousin was born on the day of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Those are things that happened in years that are so close to us that we act like they are LONG TIME AGO because they are history. And right now stuff happens and I feel like we don't really look at it the same way. And while I am super thankful for Austrian education in particular to focus strongly onto WW2 and what was going on, I am left wondering if there should have been more of a postamble about talking about what came after. Cause if anything, that is the part of history that hits us harder... cause it was stuff we might have experienced and if only indirectly.

      @user-cx9nc4pj8w Před 2 lety +1

      And the even scariest part is that it isn't over. We're living as history is playing out, but most of the time we don't realise it.

    As an Austrian, I'd like to point out that my country also spent a large chunk of time under foreign occupation by the allies, most of which was very much not fun for the people subjegated to that mess... We only got our freedom via contract 10 years later on the 15th May 1995 and the last soldier didn't leave until the 25th October, which is why that is our national holiday now...

      @@andrygugli1928 Readied to be a battlefield for which war?! It was 1945, the war was over, the Nazis had lost and the allies just decided they had the right to take their anger out on the largely innocent populace. And I'm not aware of Germany or Austria doing any of the occupying after 1945, because again, THEY HAD LOST THE WAR!
