Pluses:
The beach, the sea and the friendly staff.
They overbooked and upgraded us to the Catalonia Royal Bavaro. The food at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro restaurants was excellent. The beach was also very pretty and not too crowded on Royal Bavaro side. The restaurant staff was very friendly and attentive. I liked that our room was steps from the beach (building 18).
The Royal Package is cool indeed - large rooms, decent a la carte restourants and fine drinks are included. Where you still have to pay (if not Royal pack), no-cash policy is in place - i.e. either credit card or charge on the room. Close to the airport.
Minuses:
Rooms are located next to the "theater" so you can't sleep at night due to the noise. The shower is incredibly small and room service is terrible. You have to ask for ice all the time since the fridge does not produce ice. They are trying to sell you vacation time on your first day, try to decline it.
