Listening to this 6 years after I actually sung this back in high school... yet I still remember every word, ever breath, every phrase. Not only that but I can hear the voices I had heard during those 4 years of high school choir..man I really miss choir, my friends, competing. TMEA was hella fun and an amazing experience for me.. will never forget the amazing pieces given to us during those four year of TMEA.. this one was particularly my favorite though. 😊♥️

The poem is by Sara Teasdale.
Day, you have bruised and beaten me,
As rain beats down the bright, proud sea,
Beaten my body, bruised my soul,
Left me nothing lovely or whole --
Yet I have wrested a gift from you,
Day that dies in dusky blue:
    For suddenly over the factories
I saw a moon in the cloudy seas --
A wisp of beauty all alone
In a world as hard and gray as stone --
Oh who could be bitter and want to die
When a maiden moon wakes up in the sky?
    Good luck with the music!

It's funny that someone would describe this work as being the offspring of two other composers when all three have very distinct and different styles and are all contemporaries of each other. I have never heard a Stroope piece that sounds like a Whitacre piece. In the same way, I have never heard a piece by Dr. Childs and thought "this sounds like Stroope or Whitacre." I love the text, as I do with most of Teasdale's works. Similarly, I appreciate and enjoy the detail in this piece. Bravo, Dr.!

I find it ironic though hightly appropriate to use those two brilliant composers to define another magnificent composers work because Stroope, Whitacre, and now Childs have had pieces chosen for the Texas All State process in the past two years, including this beautiful piece by Childs, as you put it the offspring of those particular composers.
