- I see this question frequently: what battery should folks use for rc drifting.
In this video, I go through different sizes, C-ratings, and weights.
Note - I do not even talk about 3S batteries, as they are typically not allowed (or needed) for RWD rc drifting at all.
Batteries I discuss:
- Gens Ace Redline 4000mah 130C: www.avantlink.com/click.php?t...
- Ovonic 100C 5000mah: amzn.to/3dlXzHe
- POVWAY 4000mah (5000mah) 100C: amzn.to/3JKqoJy
- 8000mah standard size 2S lipo: amzn.to/3vS30UN
ESC Bullets: www.avantlink.com/click.php?t...
Video Timeline:

1:01 C-Rating
2:36 Weight

you can put a red circlular adhesif around the posi side on the those bats and it'll double the visual security ;) if you are tying down a cable use something to stop it rubbing on the carbon or it will cut right through ;)
Good tip - thank you!
OMG this video comes at the right time for me. i was in search for new battery yesterday and he just upload it today
Glad to help!
Thanks for the great info as usual Troy!
Thank you!
Great video Troy. Very informative. That car is awesome. Love the trans am body
Thanks! I really like it also. It just looks long, wide, and mean.
Thanks again for your assistance. Helped me get my Head round rwd drifting. Greatly appreciated
Glad to help! Any more questions?
@@RoadsideRC think I’m good for now buddy. With the heavy pain meds I’m on if I try and take to much in at once I’ll forget it all lol. Carpet drifting only atm but moving onto concrete asap
Great video just the info I needed
Glad I could help Ramon!
Exactly what I was looking for.
Was told I needed a 100C battery but I don’t use boost or fancy. Nice to know I can get by with the 80c I found on sale.
Yes! Even less than 80C is fine without turbo or boost.
Great video and information
Thanks!
That’s quite amazing how much the leads weighed. Thanks for another great video Troy :)
It surprised me also!
@@RoadsideRC I just had a notification from you that I’ve won a controller? Is this you?
@@ChrisKnowlesTube No - spam/scam. Please report it.
Awesome tips Troy! Good thing we don’t have to worry about driver weight like they do in the 1:1’s!
They’d need a motor the size of an oil drum and a 3000A esc to regain all that lost power with me in there!😝😂
Ha! You and me both!
Great video very informative
Thank you!
Funny I found this video today, Troy.
Coincidentally, I was having a bit of trouble with my converted TT-02 and the thing is… LiPo will give me the power I want but on NiMH, it has the weight I need.
As far as the Yokomo YD-2 goes, you can run Tamiya-style stick packs (both NiMH and 2S LiPo) or “shorty” 2S LiPo packs.
The guys around me have use Lectron Pros, ProTek and Gens Ace. I’ve seen a few RêveD shorty packs but those were mostly on RêveD MC-1 chassis. I’ve only seen one or two actual Yokomo Racing Performer shorty packs but most have been Gens Ace or Lectron.
Thanks for the response.
Nimh is very heavy, correct?
A most interesting insight into what batteries to use in drifting
*A big like👍Au👁full watch always*
Thanks for watching!
my go-to is the CNHL 4000mAh 7.6V 2S 120C HV. They are usually under $30 a piece and weigh about 165g. They are very similar to the Gens Ace Redline 4000 LCG which is also very good. The CNHL seems to have a bit more runtime which explains the slight extra weight. For the price, they can't be beat.
Thanks for the info!
I have had mixed results with CNHL batteries, but always happy to try again!
Troy that’s a beautiful T/A
Thanks! I like it!
You're going down a rabbit hole .... Drilling "speed holes" in the chassis and filing down posts thinning down wheel rims etc .... Been there 😁
I have been eyeing the chassis...it is carbon fiber...but there is a lot of it... :)
VERY informative! Thanks! Where can I get that XT90 charging plug with 5mm bullets? I have a Spektrum charger and I'd like to charge it with that...thanks in advance!
Glad to help!
I soldered that charging lead.
Now that I’ve got a few of the Redline batteries (needed the really slim batteries to fit the Usukani chassis), I think I’m gonna go with bullets for my drift cars. Sticking with Deans for the crawlers tho…
Agree - I use plugs on everything else still.
I know nothing about drift cars but they look fun, do you have to go to a drift track because there isn't any anywhere around me, or can you do it on different surfaces neat video Troy thanks
You can drift almost anywhere.
I do a lot just in my garage.
Hey 👋🏻thanks as always nice and informative video. I have Hobbywing XR10 Pro-Stock 2S 80A ESC and Gens Ace Redline 2S LiHV Battery 130C (7.6V/5100mAh). ESC’s website says 6V - 7.4V so is it still safe to use 7.6v ?
A 2S standard lipo charges to 8.4V....so it will be fine.
Even though I have HV lipos, I typically don't charge them to the HV.
@@RoadsideRC thanks a lot once again 👋🏻
i personally use redline 4000 shorties on my drift car. i run ptile and can last about 1-2hours at my track.
Great! I agree - I get1hr+ with it.
@@RoadsideRC Do you charge it on high voltage, or do you charge it to the standard 7.4 settings?
@@Cody................. I only charge it to normal voltage. Don't really have a need for the HV
What offset is your wheels? For your trans am? I got the 72 Camaro body trying to figure out the wheel offset that works with it.
+9mm
Hey man thanks for the video! Is there any specific charger for redline battery ?
No specific charger. Most of them will handle it fine.
@@RoadsideRC even the Venom Pro Duo?
@@CeeCoaching this is the one I recommend for most folks.

Easy to use, and very cost effective.
How do you like the ovonic. Do they last a while? Thinking about getting 2 of these.
They have been really good for me.
@@RoadsideRC do you have an affiliate link for them. I know you have made comments about it and want to help support your channel
Can you use the redline battery with 7.6v on your Esc? Doesn’t the Esc only take 7.4v?
I believe the esc is HV capable. I never charge it to that. I only ever use it at standard voltage.
Just build first drift rwd. What would be better on 2s 13.5t motor. Hobbywing 60a or Hobbywing 120a ?
Both of those ESCs will perform similarly. I would suggest checking this out and going with the XR10:
czcams.com/video/LPVY8W74l5c/video.html
Can you show the different vertical battery position and standard position. Wanna to know the impact when driffting.
It has very little impact. The verticle position just moves some weight forward.
@@RoadsideRC alright thx! Hope u make a content bout it. Love ur content man😄
Is redline 5100mah shorty recommendable for my mst rmx 2.5 rtr??
Yes - that would work great.
Just got a tlr 2s buggy any cheap Amazon options? Thanks
You will want to use the shorty lipos I show here.
@@RoadsideRC ok cool
Hey where could I find xt90 connectors
Here you go: amzn.to/3CbVCH2
Try front monoshock to loose more weight.
That should certainly take some off! Good thinking!
What's the total weight with body
I'm sorry - this was quite awhile ago. I no longer have this same setup and don't have a record of the total weight.
we cant have 71 in the rear for comp we need 65 i think or lower
In my area, we don't have rules around max rear weight bias.
@@RoadsideRC lucky
Now hear me out..... (hooks up nickle battery)
They work also!
if you are nitpicking grams why are you running magnet body mounts?
Because we can't have body posts sticking through on a drift car!
@@RoadsideRC That's my point. Are you after looks or performance?
@@stuwest3653 Both! Of course!
