There are many accounts of racist people using race as a weapon in very similar manners all the time. We're in an age where it gets caught on video constantly now and denying it simply because you got vilified over a single case where it was fake isn't very helpful.
Also good to point out no one really knows if this bike karen was actually faked or not as of this point in time. We have pictures of a receipt but with literally no indication on it of who actually rented it. We have video of the woman actually taking the guys phone for some reason while he claims he was trying to show people he had ownership with his phone which looks really bad no matter how you spin it regardless of whether the claim is a true or not. We have really fake looking crying with a pregnant woman fighting over a bike for some reason.

5 minutes in, and i already have a hot take. i work in a hospital, and used to float the ER for a few years. i've seen almost the entirety of how humans react to stressful stimuli. From reactions to the sudden loss of a child, relief that someone survived an incident, and even veteran staff members breaking down and crying right in the middle of their shift.
Her suddenly breaking into to tears looks a lot like somebody who has had enough shit for one day and just wants to go home. Compound that with her being pregnant too.

As someone who cries easily and eyes are regularly watering due to allergies, I'm so sick of people going after women for crying and find it incredibly sexist. Congrats men for being able to suppress the tears from falling, but just because you don't cry doesn't mean women are weak for crying or are using it as a manipulation tactic. I can't make myself fake cry, but put me in a slightly stressful situation or conflict resolution, I'll start crying on and off as I handle the situation in a calm and collected manner.

The situation to me seems like these guys were hanging out and planning to use the bikes together, but there wouldn't be enough left at that station if the nurse booked one and they bullied her so they could use it. One of their friends to the side is uncomfortable and says "just let her take the bike", the one filming asks to confirm his friend already booked that bike before dog piling with him (friend lied or was wrong). I watched Vaush for awhile. Sometimes I liked his statements, but he had always disgusting attitude towards people whom he would disagree with. Back in the good old days before social media, journalists had standards of proof summed up in the adage "If your mother tells you she loves you, check your source." Nowadays if some rando posts a video to Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook, etc, the press will take it and whatever is tagged on it as gospel, without getting any of it. It would have taken all of a few minutes to contact CitiBike or the nurse to get the receipts, or check the area for surveillance camera footage. A video from one of those involved in the incident is the worst source for the truth of what happened. "Well, the video is tagged as 'crazy white lady steals bike' so that must be what's happening." Good rule of thumb in life is to assume everyone is lying until proven otherwise. Most people are lying POS... there's only a handful of people that are honest and trustworthy.

A good rule of thumb in addition to the one you've mentioned is to assume you're dumb, biased and missing context. Because it's true for all of us and if you take our innate flaws into account you can navigate around them. Unfortunately most don't have the moral character as it takes some integrity and a valuing of truth for its own sake. Sad state of affairs we're in.

Just imagine someone pays you (and you agree) to spend three hours a day for the next five weeks seeing real stories of white people portraying themselves as the victim in instances where they were actually harassing or abusing black people. How are you going to respond initially to something like this coming out in the news? And let’s say you’re tired from everything else going on in your life as well as paying attention to a bunch of other things in your online stream and everyone else you know and generally trust is affirming a particular reaction. It’s possible you could still be even headed and withhold judgment but the cards are stacked against you psychologically unless you’re deliberately putting effort into not making assumptions. This applies to almost all reactions to news stories. I personally find reminding myself of this makes me feel a lot more compassionate towards others even with the worst takes because it’s often not deliberate cruelty or even lack of intelligence, just the wrong systems and conditions and culture for people treating news stories properly. All those people treating Syrian refugees like demons ? Probably being fed a constant steam of horror stories from Fox News, their family friends and coworkers as well as everything they see posted online, an online algorithm more than happy to give them a constantly escalating stream of of spooky videos that shape their view. So for those that didn't follow this story. The kid was 17 and had a citibike subscription that allows 45 min rides. To save money you can dock the bike for 5 mins and get another free 45 min ride. The kid was doing that and he ended up we found out that he held the bike there for 40 min an took off around 8pm.
His buddies were encouraging him to let the girl take the bike. And after the video the kid on the right was a gentleman and gave her his ebike.
Also there are pedal bikes and ebikes. She is pregnant so wanted an ebike and the boys were hoarding all if them preventing people from renting docked bikes so they could save money. Citibike has the 45 min option to allow users like her to have an opportunity to have an ebike and prevent hoarding. So the kids were working against what citibike wants and caused a traumatic confrontation.
At the end nobody was acting all that horrible. And the big takeaway is that race hustlers took off with this and caused the lady hrm and threats. The race hustler aspect is the story here, not the tiny altercation.
The boy was.. he was claiming the e-bike so he was acting horrible, even saying that the baby would be mentaly distortion ( or how you call it)...

The woman isn't horrible because she wanted the bike that she had rightly booked. Why should she be terrorised, harassed, and in fear of being assaulted, robbed or miscarrying when she didn't do anything wrong.
The guys who stepped in to suggest the bike be redocked it aren't being horrible, they're very reasonably trying to resolve the situation fairly.

Additional Context:
The reason they were fighting over the bike while others were there is because it was the only E-bike on the rack, which the 6 mo. pregnant nurse wanted for obvious reasons after her 12 hour shift.
Also, when you dock these things, your ride is over and you can't "hold" them since they're then up for grabs to paying customers, especially to people reserving them on the app. You see the bike's light is off before she scans her app, and then the guys force it back on the rack.
Likely the guys wanted to dock the bike so the meter wasn't running while they were hanging out in the area. Thing is that you can't go a hold a bike you haven't scanned - Steve mentioned it's like holding a cab which is a perfect comparison.
It's possible that she'd reserved an e-bike using the app, maybe when she was leaving her job, and that was the bike assigned to her. When she got to the bike rack location she scanned the bike and the boy refused to let her take it.

I think this whole routine that teenagers in the city use to get free bikes. One time I was returning a Citibike and two black teenage boys came up to me. Super politely they were like “miss, if you’re done with the bike we can take it.” I was like “no, I’m gonna dock it and then you can rent it”. As soon as I said that, they called me a nasty name and walked off. They wanted a free bike on my dime.
Same here in germany but with German teens. It's a teenager thing. Funny tho because I had literally the same word for word interaction just in German with those German teens.
Also had a 13 year old asking me for cigarettes when he saw me smoking and when I said "I'm sure as hell not giving a kid cigs." he started insulting me And pretended to call his brother. Little does he know that I know his brother and he is a vowed Muslim. Needless to say that he didn't like it at all that his younger sibling was asking for cigarettes.
His brother apologised to me because the way his brother told the story was making me out to be a racist kid beater...

It is impossible for some of these people, i.e. the racial idealogues, to think outside of their frame of mind. I presume that if they did, the cognitive dissonance would be so excruciatingly bad that they would have to curl in a ball and rock themselves to sleep. I can't imagine the guilt they would feel for falsely accusing people they react to that end up causing innocent people harm. I've said it before and ill say it again, these people are despicable.

Well, guess what she actually bought the bike and the kids disappeared. She has the receipts, and when they went to talk to the kids, they were no where to be found, she was trying to park the bike before they took it or they would of took it on her card and she was gonna be liable for the bike, they literally tried to take her bike and they did not pay for it like they lied saying on the video, they didn’t wanna park the bike back because they were trying to steal it on her account and it wasn’t on theirs

The real issue is NOT what happened in the video but rather as Destiny points out, the too-quick reaction by people to jump to conclusions. Because this was a video where a white person could be presented in the wrong, those jumping to conclusions by default felt the white person was in the wrong racializing this video. Had it been a video where clearly the black people were in the wrong then no it would not have been jumped on and gone viral most likely resulting in the same too quick to judge mentality. That is the real issue. The fact that there is a Thirst for examples of 'white racism' or "Karens' and they were too quick to look into it so it went viral. Turns out those black guys were in the wrong in this video in hindsight, but the same people who jumped on the bandwagon aren't going to apologize, nor will they change their Thirst for Karen videos.
