    I can't imagine what kind of sound you got from the 9080's. I went to Best buy and heard the 9020's in person today and holy freaking hell, the bass was insanely crisp, punchy and accurate AF, 8" subwoofers are plenty big enough to fill your living room up.

    As a fairly new owner of DefTech, I have to admit that they've definitely gained a fan for life. Even though my speakers are the much older BP 7002'S, the first time I heard them I was absolutely blown away. I drove 3.5 hours north to Dallas and the gentleman had them setup in his garage. He gave me the go to crank them and I felt I was transported into a concert!
    I too, have that random pop when the amp kicks on and off from time to time. I've been curious about the newer models, but they will have to wait until I can afford such an upgrade.

    Good review. I've had Definitive Technology speakers (same set, flagship at the time) for 25 years, and I love them. They truly fill the room with sound in a realistic way so that you feel you are in the middle of the action, especially with DT surrounds.

    Nice, I've been rocking a full set of the last gen BP8040s in 7.2.2 with the SR8040 surrounds. Since I couldn't cut in Atmos speakers, went with white DefTech AW5500s that I could ceiling mount, they match the sound signature pretty spot on since they have similar tweeters.

  • @maxwired2235
    @maxwired2235 Před 3 lety +1

    Really nice review! I purchased a new set of DefTech BP30's for front/rear channels and a CLR2000 center back in '98. Each tower has (4) 6.5" drivers and (2) 1" aluminum dome tweeters, 2 drivers and 1 tweeter on the front and the same configuration on the back of each towet. The center has (2) 6.5" drivers and (1) Tweeter. That's (18) mid/bass drivers and (9) tweeters. The Definitives with built in subs will eventually have amp failure. Basic sound engineering proves smaller drivers and less of them can't compare to DT's original line up. Why they choose to go with their current line is beyond logical. I just added 2 SVS subs, and I will never change my setup. I am speechless when it comes to their performance with music and HT, simply stunning.

    After much research and very positive reviews, I decided to purchase the DT 9080s for my Christmas present. I found these speakers, brand new, at a discounted price, and all I can say is I'm in audio paradise ! The highs & mids are crystal clear and the bass is AWESOME!!! I have a basic 2 channel setup but I drive these monsters with an Emotiva xpa3 amp, 300 wats per channel, and movies and especially music have to be heard to be believed. They can play EXTREMELY loud without sacrificing any clarity and the bass section, powered by a 450 watt internal amp connected to a 12in woofer and 2 12in bass radiators in each speaker, shakes the foundation of my house to it's knees ! They also have the dolby atmos speakers built in, one 51/4 midrange and a 1in tweeter, but haven't used them as of yet. All I can say is I LUV these speakers ! Btw, they do have an annoying thump, sometimes, when powering up; the only negative, so far.

Also look at the difference between setting the speakers between small and large on the AVR.

  • @akaredcrossbow

    Thank you for the video!
    My right BP9060 towers subwoofer amp just died after owning it for just over 3 years. I was told by DefTech that I was out of warranty and I would have to pay $300 plus shipping for a new amp and install it myself. When I bought them I knew and DefTech knew that the tower amps had issues but I bought them anyway.
    The pop your hearing is the amps that are ready to die, today or 5 years from now. The thump sound when turning on is normal, but the pop noise when they’re turning off isn’t a good thing. DefTech has known about this issue in their speakers for a very long time and they haven’t done anything to fix their issue. For such an expensive speaker you would think the warranty would be minimum 5 years!
    DefTech definitely has some great sounding speakers, but I would never buy them again and never would buy a powered tower, center speaker again.
    I believe it’s time to go all SVS Ultra and invest in a Good 11 channel amplifier.
    Thank You!

      The popping has nothing to do with what your talking about. I have heard popping from many dif makers. It's other factors not the amp.

    • @akaredcrossbow
      @akaredcrossbow Před 3 lety

      @@BMWliterbikes4life just letting people know my experience. I lived with my two towers and my center turn on thump for 3 years, never experienced a shut down thump. Six months later I start to experience an amp “pop”(much different sound than a thump, like an electric arc discharge) and my tower sub stops working and now my D symbol and light on the plate has also stopped lighting up, so absolutely no power going to the tower. I’ve pulled out my subwoofer to test and it works perfectly along with all my other speakers in the tower. I removed the amp plate and noticed an almost burnt, darkened resistor, I’m almost positive that’s the issue. I have also checked the fuse and that’s fine. There is no other explanation but a faulty amp in the tower that is a known trashy product in the first place that is in every BP9040 and BP9060. The BP9040 and the BP9060 use the same amp and it’s my opinion that the amp is the perfect size for the 9040, but the bigger woofer size in the 9060 is using to much power and blowing the inferior amp. They should’ve designed an amp specifically for the 9060 and there would be no issues.
      If you can come up with a better explanation for what’s going on, then I’m up for taking your advice to try and fix the issue.

    • @BMWliterbikes4life
      @BMWliterbikes4life Před 3 lety +1

      @@akaredcrossbow I get what your saying. Usually the issue is with grounding of your homes electrical service. Sometimes adding ground rods to your service helps. Remember that a house full of amps was not the engineered design of your electrical service when the house was built. So when we all go crazy with adding components you need to get an electrician involved to take a look at the service , the circuit feeding the components and also suggest devices that can help with dissipating unwanted voltages etc. go to emotive.com and take a look at their ac and dc filters for multiple component systems. The dc filter model may have helped save the amps. I own two 9060 towers and plan to use the dc filter on my front stage. And the ac filter device on my AVR , cable box , roku etc.

      @@BMWliterbikes4life I did have an electrician come in and he set up a new box and outlets just for sound equipment and a 12 foot ground pole into the ground. The other thing I was thinking that could be the the issue is I have a Furman Elite -15 PFI power conditioner and a Panamax MR4300 power conditioner. The left tower and center are plugged into the Furman and the right tower that has the issue is plugged into the Panamax because the right tower cord is to short to reach the Furman. I’m just wondering if the Panamax is not capable of doing the job it is supposed to be doing?

I actually unplugged the center channel, as I feel that too much bass undertone on the dialog channel stripped away a bit of the vocal clarity at times. There is plenty of bass coming from the two built in subs from the 7004s. Plenty for me anyway lol.

    For the last 4 years I had used the BP 9020's with the CS 9040. Due to some remodeling going on at the house, I now have a new room that is larger and thus allowed me to upgrade the surround sound.
    I upgraded to the BP 9060's and the CS 9080. I have temporarily made the 9020's the surround sound speakers and I think they are overkill as they drown out the fronts. I have some sr-9040's I've ordered to be the surrounds, but I think I will change them out for the sr-9080's.
    I couldn't agree with you more. This setup, these speakers, are fantastic. I LOVE watching movies, and this enables me to be fully emersed into the movies. Even my wife and kids, whom weren't happy about the decision for a theater room now agree.
    Now, I have to upgrade the sub. My single Martin Logan Dynamo 700 isn't sufficient for the balance.

    I had an opportunity to to sit in a very comfortable leather chair and listen to a Definitive surround system at a Magnolia (Best Buy) several years ago and was a bit stunned at just how bright the speaker system was while hearing the amazingly clean and tight the base was. I don't recall if Ihad my Klipsch 550s back then. That was in the mid 1990s. At the time I owned a low end Klipsch center channel and a great pair of Infinity rear channels. With the exception of the Klipsch 52C center channel now, the rest of the speakers are original. I gave my sub to my son when I moved from a house to an apt.
    While I was blown away by the Definitive speakers, the cost back then seemed stratospheric. I still have no retreat with my current system which is operating perfectly. I did recently upgrade to a Yamaha 4K receiver, the greatly improved center channel and a Sony 4K BlueRay player, along with a Samsung QLED 55” TV.. I’m a happy senior citizen. I had been running Klipsch and he was running Jamo's. After your review, we went out on a limb and listened to a set in a showroom. Needless to say we're a little broker now. Your review was spot on and we are so impressed with your recommendation. Would you mind sharing how you setup your AVR with these? Did you utilize any auto room calibration or set them up manually? I was speaking along the lines of AutoEQ or Audessy? Again, thanks for the great videos and sound advice (no pun intended).

    I'm currently running the Def Tech 8080 12 inch front towers in my Atmos system. I LOVE THEM, not only for movies, but you CAN NOT beat them for 2.0 music. Satellites and Subs which I've run in the past sound great, but, are difficult to blend the frequency between the sats and subs, always seemed there was something missing. But with the Def Tech 8080 there is perfect blend of frequency. I run mine full range with the rear bass volume control at 12:00. I also eq'd them with my Onkyo receiver to cut the 25hrz out due to walls rattling. I also utilize a 1000wt Velodyne subwoofer in the rear for movies. So, for 2.0 music the 8080 are perfectly tuned with a smooth blend and for Atmos movies the rear sub helps with additional low end. Sweet Sweet Sweet!!!! EDIT: Also, another reviewer mentioned to pull them out from the wall about a foot and toe them in 22 degrees, this is the correct placement.

If you already have in-wall front speakers (Polk), would it be better to just replace those with DefTech DI 5.5LCR, or buy the BP9040s and use them as the main front speakers? This would mean though the existed in wall speakers gets disconnected. There are already 4 in-ceiling speakers for surround and dolby atmos. Thanks,

    Def tech and Polk are closely tied together through history. Look at an old polk micropro sub. Also the old polk VM series bookshelf’s. They were basically def techs back then. Back when made in USA and customer service was in Baltimore. I’m a big fan of def tech. Good video. (Some of my history might be a little off) yours are obv very high end.

    Def Tech Floorstanding Speakers with the built-in subs are awesome. I have a pair of Pro Tower 400s that are over 20 years old. The powered dual 6.5-inch subs each tower fill the whole room with tight bass. The passive radiators on the newer models are a nice touch because the Pro Towers produce a lot of port noise at high volumes.

    Thank you Chris for giving Definitive Technology some love. I still have a set of definitive technology pro tower 400 speakers along with the matching center channel and surround speakers that I bought in 1999. Since I live in an apartment I can't go bigger but not for one day have ever regretted buying these. Someday if I move into a house the pro tower 400's will become a centerpiece for a two-channel system. definitive technology was founded by the venerable Sandy Gross who has a penchant for founding companies and leaving.After leaving definitive technology he went and founded Golden Ear, then he left. Apparently a multi-millionaire version of ADD. I would really love to see you do a review on Golden Ear speakers I think you might be blown away as well. My pro tower 400s also have a built-in subwoofer along with I believe a 125 watt digital amplifier. They've been working flawlessly almost everyday since 1999. the butyl rubber surrounds around the speakers are just as supple and intact as they were the day I bought them. Thanks again for a great review.

    Great review Chris I’ve had def techs for 15 yrs . No one gets it not one company that I know of can build a center channel like them . The sub adds the richness and fullness of a voice not all voices are tenors . The center should be able to play close to full range it has to be dynamic . I’m currently using cs9060 .

    Nice Vid.. I am actually borrowing my brother-In-Law's older Def Tech Speakers.. BP7000SCs for my LR and built in subs.. which were the flag ships back then..
    They are very nice speakers and fill my dedicated home theater I just finished a few months back which has some relevance to the speakers you are reviewing. Personally, up firing atmos speakers in my opinion is not something I'd consider but I am sure some don't want to cut holes and I guess its a decent compromise.
    I am just waiting until I get my Atlantic Technology 8600e LRs to compare them. Tho I am using the 8600e Center channel with these Def tech BP7000SCs because I didn't have a Def tech center to use.
    I did think about going Def Tech at one point but I am most likely gonna use the AT set up I am doing for the 7.2.4...

      I have had the same setup now for about a year and a half, the amps for the sub can be a problem. I have had to replace mine . But as long as they are under warranty Sound United will replace them free of charge. I have not had a problem with them since I went to not using the LFE and run them large and full range. The subs still put out plenty of base . But I do let the SVS subs handle the LFE.

    I have the 9040 setup in a 4x4x2.5 meter room, especially for two channel hifi listening: 1. tower placement is DIFFICULT (took me weeks to get it "perfect" with sound treatment). 2. no need for extra subwoofers (you already have ONE powered 400w subwoofer in each speaker) 3. ATMOS: just buy a surround set for the ceiling. 4. center: no need for another sub in it. 5. Sound stage is created by speaker placement, not bipolar functionality. Bp fills the room and gives depth. 6. DO NOT OVERKILL/SATURATE your room with sound and speakers that are too powerful! END NOTE: Very good sounding speakers for my room.
