Mackerel Mayhem Montage - Mackerel Fishing At Chesil Beach

  • Back in the summer we took a break from the scooter fun and headed to the South West coast of England to do a spot of mackerel fishing. This video was a montage of the footage we recorded. I get my words mixed a little when explaining how we are fishing and apologies for that. If anyone has any questions or indeed can add value to our techniques, please feel free to leave constructive comments.
Please note: No Anglers were harmed during the making of this video and I can assure you that the fish tasted lovely ;)....

After reminiscing of my childhood in the 1980s and fishing at Bexington my wife bought me a fishing set up for my 41st. I am now watching videos on youtube and can not wait to get down and fish again. The taste of freshly caught mackerel BBQ is really like nothing else. Freshly frozen mackerel from the supermarket is not the same. Great video and thank you for sharing.

Understood and completely agree about the 'dustbin liner' culture, it sickens me when I see bags full of fish and you just know they're going to end up in the dustbin! I have started fishing 'barbless' and find I don't lose fish and if I do it was meant to be. I also never handle my fish if at all possible if they're being released, just shake them off. With the Mackerel as close as they were spinning with a single spinner on a light rod would have been great sport. 👍

You wouldn’t need to put one a long way out to catch a bass with a live mackerel. Drop it out down at your feet in the wash and that’s where you’ll catch bass at Chesil or most places I have been successful. Bass like the breaking water in close in my experience.

Spot on with the dumping. I dont know why people do that but i have notices its mostly eastern Europeans that does that.

    Beautiful and very interesting video.
I try to float fish for mackerel at a harbour in Spain with no luck. I think I must be doing something wrong...
I have two questions, maybe you may help me, 1) what do you think it is the best fishing technique for mackerel at a harbour, float fishing or bottom fishing? 2) what is the best bait or lure for mackerel fishing?
Thank you very much and keep it up.

float fishing is fine set your depth on a sliding float rig up and down until you find the fish as for bait a small sliver of mackerel or herring around 2.5inches long on a single hook this also really is a great way to get bigger fish

As a general rule, you should use 10lbs breaking strain of line for every 1oz of lead you are using. You shouldn’t need much more than 2-3ozs or less whilst fishing for mackerel and even less if fishing from a pier.
      Hope that helps

    • @scootyman2974

      TRACEY SEYMOUR
Hello Tracey, sorry for the slow reply. I have been working on life projects and had to leave CZcams alone for a while. Thank you for your question. Mackerel season runs from around the end of April/early May until around the end of September into early October. It varies a little from year to year but if you went from June to August you should be ok. A couple of pointers we have found increase your chances of catching. Watch the weather closely. Mackerel hunt and feed using sight. If the water is cloudy or stirred up then the mackerel might not see their prey (small baitfish) and stay off shore. Wind seems to affect catching also. A nice south westerly below around 10-15 mph but not more is a good guide as fish use the tides to come in close to feed. If the wind is blowing "offshore" i.e behind you when facing the sea, a light blow of around 5 mph but not much more is a good tide to fish on.
Talking of tides, mackerel come in on high tide to feed so fish two hours before high tide till two hours after.
      The kit we use is:
11-12' bass rod or a carp rod is good for this
6-8lb line with a shock leader of around 30lb breaking strain (google shockleader or ask a fishing shop about this as it's very important.
      1-3 oz weight is ample
Whichever mackerel trace takes your fancy. We use the tinsel type ones quite a bit to good effect at chesil.
If you are fishing at Chesil for mackerel for the first time, please don't take too many if you go. People get into a frenzy and all too often it ends up being dumped in the car park by the bins, such a sad sight.
Take a barbecue and have them for breakfast at 05:00 when the sun is coming up 🤗 We love to do this but please make sure you take all your BBQ rubbish home.
I'm not preaching to you, it's just such a lovely place and we have had so many nice times here, it's good to try and keep it nice for the next generation.
Good luck with your fishing and best regards

      Hi Scott,
It's the ferrybridge end near to Portland. There is a car park for the chesil beach visitor centre. Park there, over the boardwalk onto the stones, turn right and walk 250 metres until you get to an old wall in the stones (looks like the remains of a building).
Up and over the stones to the water. Try there as it's the location of an old ship wreck around there. Also good for trigger fish if they are in. Good luck and have fun

    • @scootyman2974
      @scootyman2974  Před 4 lety +1

Tony Camplin probably around 80-100 yards but that’s not always relevant. We have been at Chesil and watched a complete shoal come right past us on the shoreline after the baitfish. Sometimes you’ll catch nothing and other times you’re into the fish all day at Chesil. We usually fish two to three hours before high tide through till two or three hours after. If you do catch mackerel there. Make sure you take a head off, put it on a 3/0 or 4/0 hook and cast it literally at your feet in the gutter where the wash is and leave it. You’ll have a good chance at taking a bass there. Best regards
