Leonard Cohen was asked to perform his song at the Vancouver Olympics, but he was unable to do so. He suggested k.d. Lang ( fellow Canadian ) for the performance. He was in the audience when she performed it. Her version is my favourite.
I remember watching this on the night. By the end of the song was standing in the middle of my livingroom with tears running down my face. It was stunning.
In some ways I feel bad for KD because prior to this, although people knew she sang this song, she was known for other things too. Since this night, and probably forever more in Canada, this will be the only song and performance she's known for. She has a huge collection, but this night, this performance, was epic. A Canadian singer, singing a song written by a Canadian, in Vancouver BC at the Olympics... it will remain unmatched.
if a singer had to be known for one song over all others, her rendition of this is the absolute best--ever-- acknowledged by Leonard Cohen himself. Honestly, my favorite version of this is her at the Logies award video here on YT.
She exploded on the scene (deservedly, obvi)😉 in the 1980s - everyone I knew bought her smash CD Torch and Twang, and thereafter. I suspect people who think only of this particular (legendary) performance didn’t know her beforehand; she’s been touring globally since the ‘80s.
The best female vocalist in the last 30-40 years... Lesser know do to her Canadian roots / Inspired by Patsy Cline So started with country ish music add in her alternative sexuality, I am sure she is just fine without the insane chase of fame). .Got big when the great Roy Orbison sang his famous "Crying" with her as a duet .... Her solo tribute version is awesome .. Rare someone can be pretty much technically PERFECT as a singer and put so so much emotion, feel and presence to everything she sings..
Only hours hours before giving her performance at the opening ceremonies, Georgian lunger Nodar Kumaritashvili died while training. This tragedy intensified the emotions of the athletes and everyone in attendance.
Back in the mid eighties, my then girlfriend dragged me to a KD concert. At that time KD wore long skirts and army boots. I thought it was a joke. After seeing her live, I totally became a huge fan. I had never heard a voice so powerfull and spot on key! TREMENDOUS!
THIS is why Cohen himself said her renditions are the best of everyone’s including his own. This particular performance brings me to chills and tears every time. It’s almost impossible to believe so much talent and beauty. kd is incredibly charismatic and humble and universally beloved. Great reaction btw🤘🏽
This is by any account, a wonderful performance of Leonards song...but my preference remains for her "Hallelujah" from the 2006 Juno awards...for the theatricality, the big stage and the music savvy crowd welcoming back a Canadian legend.
IF I COULD WRITE THAT FEELING! How i feel so close to you reacting to her and my identity, my humanity!! It is truly a hallelujah. It's simple and basic and human. Hi!!! SHE!!! jesus christ.
I consider this song to be hers since I first heard her sing it. Haha - every artist makes it their own. Yes they do! Cohen wrote 80 verses and singers generally only sing 2-4 verses, so they pick and choose the ones that mean something to them. Every time she sings it, it is magical, but there are also two other performances of note. One was at the Logies in Australia right after this Olympic performance. The other was at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, where Cohen was being inducted and was in the audience.
Kd is my all time favourite female singer of all time . Her technical prowess and imotional intensity is only matched by Dimash. Can we all imagine a duet.
Very moving and copyright did NOT interfere with the white clad K.D. Lang ombience singing...nor did the encircled quiet respectful audience with their gentle waving lights from their iphones ...., just heavenly!
The more often I listen to KD or Leonard sing this song, I find myself trying to sing it like them throughout the day. Haven't mastered it yet, but so far one neighbor clapped. I was thrilled, then realized she's partially deaf, lol.
Alex ---- thank you for this!!! I'm so glad you've reacted to our KD and, in particular, this performance. I was there (I live in Vancouver) and got head to feet goosebumps. I got goosebumps on my kidneys watching this with you again! She's such a powerful yet sensitive vocalist. Her albums are a memorable journey. Be well, and thanks again.
Fan girl since early 90’s & I say without exception, her rendition of Hallelujah would make death row inmates fall to their knees & cry. It’s just beyond✨
Great reaction to the BEST version of this song ever made. It brings tears to my eyes at the end EVERY time. God bless this gift to us...KD Lang. Beautiful. SHE is such a blessing and gifted singer. Constant Craving is another of her best songs.
This was in BC Place stadium, not ideal for concerts but they did well on this occasion. About 50k there for the opening ceremony which was spectacular. She held that entire place spellbound. My home town threw quite the party.
Music is such a personal thing for one person; how you react to a song or singer may not have the same affect on someone else. kd lang has such power, control, range, vibrato and emotion in her voice that so many of us have the same visceral reaction to hearing her. Either the very first time or the 100th time; she moves you, she gets into your emotional depth and touches all your feels (good, bad, sad and sexy). This is my first time seeing you and I clicked on this because of kd lang's rendiition of Hallelujah. I have been of fan of hers since she performed at the closing ceremony at the Winter Olympics in 84 (?). You have to listen to her entire discography to truly appreciate her range is genres of music. She is a gift from Heaven and her voice is that of an Angel.
Check out the duet of crying with Roy Orbison and a young k.d. lang. She has a remarkable voice and in her early days felt she could be a reincarnation of Patsy Cline
k.d.lang, yes. Oh hell yes. (Her cover of Roy Orbison's 'Crying', anyone?) But... Also: Pentatonix's "Hallelujah". Shot out in the southern CA desert. Go listen to that one. Completely different since they're an a capella group.
You can hear her version of this song all the way to your soul. KD Lang, Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley all do a fabulous job. Leonard Cohen, who wrote this song, will always remain my favorite. KD Lang is a close second and Jeff Buckley is in third place All three of them touch you with this song in different ways.
Thank you so much for your kind reaction and it was beautiful I was there. My question is why do some reaction people have to blank out some stuff and others you can see the whole thing I'm Canadian I'm not sure I'm not very social media type of person. I just have to say though your reaction was awesome and I'm so sorry that you have to even blank some stuff out I don't understand why you have to and other people don't so all I can say is I think I trust you more so thank you very much and God bless🙏🕊🙏🙏🙏🙏🕊
@@wolfangel369 Female contraltos are *much* more rare than male tenors, we just want her to get that extra acknowledgement for her unusual and unique range 😉

K.D Laing the best female singer and her version of Hallelujah has NO EQUAL
You are 💯
Absolutely.
There is KD's version and then there are all the rest and people can argue over them ..........................which one of them is second !
None even close. Not even Buckley--rest in peace.

Was
His favorite too
He said afterwards that he would never sing it again, it was her's now.
Leonard Cohen also said, “Ask KD to sing it. It’s really her song now.” And sing it she did!
Kd lang is a woman not a he.. she is amazing what a voice

She is a musical instrument!!!
Please watch her videos covering Roy Orbison's "Crying". Several venues.

Many of us knew about her and her singing for many years before this. She’s been a Canadian icon for a long time. Where’ve YOU been?

some people just own songs after they have sung them, and KD owns this one, like Bobby Hatfield owns Unchained Melody. No one will do it better.
I had all her albums. She was very well loved and known

And yet Rolling Stone magazine left her of the Top 200 singers of all time...what a joke. More proof how irrelevant that magazine has become.

Leonard Cohen himself said this was hands down the best rendition ever and I agree, though the version you reference is also amazing.

Leonard actually gave her this song. Originally they wanted him to perform but he was like no, let her, it's hers now.
Goosebumps always .. kd lang’s voice is like a gift to the world
Roy Orbison picked her to sing with him because of her voice. Listen to her singing a tribute to Roy called Crying.

Phenomenal performance. Best of the best. Still my favorite version. Good reaction.
The Canadian Olympic big shots asked Leonard Cohen to sing it. He said, no, ask Kd Lang to sing it. History was made.
