He is accompanied by his wife at the stage because in case he's going to be interviewed by the judges she can interprete for him. He barely speak English because he only achieved grade 3 since he's living in the street. In the phils grade 3 education is just enough to barely write nor read and write your name in pilipino language. The amazing thing is he's singing in english and italian fluently. God bless him. Yes, I think you're right. It was probably arranged for her to be there in case the judges ask questions. He can speak and understand some English as shown in the clips, but that was rehearsed and he was probably given time to do things over if he made mistakes. But I expect he'd have difficulty conversing, and that would just add to his nervousness.
In any case, it was so sweet of his wife to support him like this. 💕

Someone did a bit of digging and discovered they made him "give a happy ending" to his life story (their contracts force the contestants to do this) - He'd found his family "before" he went onto the talent show in the Philippines. But the AGT decided they wanted a different "story". But the truth is even more amazing!
This is what the other person found out:
As a very young child, he was at the jail with his father... because his mother left him. But a guard took him in to give him a home. When he was 7 he found out the guard & wife weren't his real parents and ran away to the streets. He was taking care of chickens at 18 when he discovered he could switch voices. (lucky chickens, those hens likely laid more eggs!)
But he found his father & stepmother when a customer, (think he sold some sort of food)
told him he thought he knew his father. It was him, so he was reunited with the father. But there were issues, disharmony and he returned to the streets. He wanted to find his mother and eventually found her, as well as his brother & sister. (not sure if they are full siblings or half, & no information about a stepfather either.) Unfortunately, disharmony and troubles caused him to leave again.
He stayed on his own & was encouraged by friends to go to the talent show in 2011 because he had been doing karaoke at places & singing.
So when he won the contest, his family came to see him & he has such a big heart, he reunited with them. But he took the prize money & he got his own place. (Not sure when he met his wife - before or after. She may have been one of his friends.)
But she became his rock, encouraging him, being the supportive love in his life. When he felt like giving up, she worked hard to arrange for him to perform (like a manager would for him) & soon he received interest abroad. Then he finally got more exposure and the rest most know about from there...
When I watched the performance Of Marcelito The Prayer was able give mr the goose bumps and tear. Has to be blessed by God
