  • Check out NEOM's cool project - 'THE LINE' City! It's super long, super tall, and wants to be car-free. 😲 Watch as they build it in the Saudi desert. People first thought it was a joke, but now it's real!
Learn about a city plan from a long time ago called Ciudad Lineal. NEOM's 'The Line' is way bigger! But can it work with 9 million people in just 34 square kilometers?
There's a fast train idea called 'spine,' but is it too fast? Some worry it might not work with today's tech. And why build a super tall glass building? What's the plan for garbage?
Think about animals and the environment. Does 'The Line' help or hurt? Some people are worried about that.
People are upset about forced moving and serious decisions. How will 'The Line' change Saudi Arabia? Some folks are worried it might not work out.
Tell us what you think! Is 'The Line' a cool idea or maybe not? Leave your thoughts! 👇 #thelinecity #neomcity #neom

@@larsvonlennep6405 No, the question is: why making such an insanely impractical, expensive and stupid project ? They have plenty of space to build cities. A line is the most impractical and expensive way to build a city by far. The most practical being the square and disk because they minimize distances and allow easy extension. What if there is a fire at two points of the line, due to terrorists are malfunctions ? Millions of people are trapped in a giant prison with no escape route. What if the train fails or there is a fire in the tunnels ? Same thing. And you can't go out except at ONE end of the line, which is 180 km away (the other end is the sea).
Logistically, it's also incredibly stupid, everything has to go through either end of the city, including water, sewage, electricity, food, etc.
This is insane from all points of view, it is just an extremely stupid vanity project and a prison city.

Neom has announced that the Line will be reduced in length from 170 to just 2,4 km. A reduction of 98,6%.
This should be finished by 2030, but I doubt they will even achieve this.
It should now house 300.000 people instead of 9.000.000. My guess is that IF this reduced structure is built it will only be inhabited by a fraction of that. Maybe a few thousand.

Honestly I don’t think it’s economically and socially feasible. Cities throughout history have been circular for a variety of reasons that are easily researched and make sense. Also Saudi has a horrrid human rights record to include killing African immigrants at its southern border regularly. The country should probably improve its existing cities, build more viable ones, and improve things such as education, economic diversification, and perhaps using some influence to help thier Arab brothers and sisters a few hours away encountering mass starvation in Yemen. This all a political ploy with very little input from other than one narcissistic ruler who can’t take criticism for fear of death ( overt or special ops) from those who dare.
In practically it could probably start in sections as an experiment

They have scaled down the line. Looks like they are building it in sections, which is a good idea. My major concern has to do with climate change. Water has no where to go and there have been floods due to climate change. What will they do when 6 inches of rain comes down? It will flood from the ground up. Also, it is going to be without transportation of a personal matter. What will I do if my Mother is sick and she lives 90 miles away? How am I going to get there? Is some AI robot going to strap me on his back and run through the desert to my destination? Also, living there will be expensive. It will be like living in a can of tuna, smell and all -
If this works, I'll be the first to applaud. If it fails, it will be a black mark against the Crown Prince. This isn't the only project. There are several, none of which I will be able to afford and enjoy.
I personally think the money spent on all these projects could be better spent on national security, infrastructure, education, etc.
These projects have nothing to do with oil depletion. It has to do with conpetition. Saudi Arabia is being left behind while their neighbors are advancing their economies with tourism. Egypt has pyramids and King Tut, the UAE has Dubai, and Qatar has a hard to beat sporting venue. Saudi Arabia needs to catch up and they now have a leader that is willing to bend the status quo in order to get it done.

Not if you plan it efficiently enough so that people would always have the shortest possible distance to travel no matter where in the city they live. You could actually plan it so that you'd have three lengthwise lines of different districts. One outer line for housing, the center line for shopping, services and mercantile, and the last line for offices and corporation HQs. That way, the vast majority of all travel would only take place across the width of the city instead of the length. You would of course need to have lengthwise travel as well but not for daily commutes.
Add to that, trains travelling that fast wouldn't make people throw up. The acceleration is so gradual that the effects of g-forces wouldn't be felt at all.
