  • This is a video on how to replace the sash operator and/or operator handle on a Pella casement window.
    The sill cover or bottom stop needs to be removed in order to access the operator. Once the stop has been removed, the operator can be unscrewed and replaced. You will need to remove the nails that originally held the stop in before replacing the stop.

    The cost for these replacement parts is ridiculous. Does anyone have any instructions on how to replace this style operator with a cheaper alternative?

    I have a house that was built in 1969. It has these Pella casement windows. A couple of the windows were jammed up, dirty or didn't slide well when I purchased the house in 2017, but after cleaning and applying some WD-40, all but 2 of the windows work. One is missing the mechanism and on one, the mechanism is bent, it appears from someone attempting to force the window open with the crank when it was jammed.
    We're talking about 2 dozen windows. Idk why so many ppl are talking trash about this system. I didn't find any rot at all and most of the mechanisms, other than being dirty and unlubricated, seemed to be in perfect working order. These windows, if installed correctly, seem to be a quality, robust product that requires very little routine maintenance or replacement.

    Is this a right hand operator or a left hand operator? My window opens from the same direction but want to be sure I purchase the correct part. Thanks.

    after replacing TWO of these on the same window.. I decided to modify the operator abit... switching the style becuase I HATE the Pella hinge style.. damn things never last me more then 2 yrs and are expensive. Now the current one is frozen and has stripped gears. I wonder if I can interchange the crank/cover with a different ( universal style) operator?

    Okay need advice. Have a casement window and it wont open. It opens a crack, but every time I try to turn it it wont budge. I broke the crank off trying to turn it. Now I've used a pliers to attempt to get the crank to budge, but no use. So how do I replace the operator?

    • @AllAboutDoorsandWindows
      @AllAboutDoorsandWindows  Před 10 lety

      Have you tried just pushing it open? There's a hinge on the window and if everything is good, you should be able to just push it. If you can't push it open, it may be hitting on top or bottom (if your house has settled over time, there could be boards or brick or something hitting the window where it should be clear to open). I guess if you think the operator is still the issue and nothing's hitting the window, you could remove the stop like we did in the video and see if the arm that connects to the sash has somehow come off or broken. If it has, you'd be able to unscrew the operator and remove it. Just make sure someone's ready to hold the window so it doesn't fall out.

  • @geraldsutton74

    Do you have a video of how to replace the entire window?

    • @AllAboutDoorsandWindows
      @AllAboutDoorsandWindows  Před 4 lety +2

      We don't. There's so many different options -- you can replace with another Pella or you can replace with replacement windows or you can replace with another brand. Usually you want to check with the brand of the window you put in also and make sure that your warranty isn't voided by who installs it.

      Thank you for the video. Do you have one on how to align the type of casement mechanism shown on the video? Thanks

    • @AllAboutDoorsandWindows
      @AllAboutDoorsandWindows  Před 3 lety

      @@martce I'm not completely sure what you mean by 'align'. When you replace a casement operator, it should be relatively ready-to-install/ready-to-go when you purchase it. Sometimes the manufacturers or vendors have it packaged with the arms completely folded in to make it easier to ship, but if you stick your handle on the gear and operate/turn it a few times back and forth, the gears should line up and you should be ready to go, but it's super simple. Let me know if that is what you mean. If not, explain a little bit more and I would be happy to help!

      Thank you. Using the current operator, after the casement window is opened, it cannot be closed as the window is not aligned true. The new operators have a nut that can be twisted to realigned to the vertical. Mine does not have. It’s an old 1995 pella proline

    No idea why the bad mouthing of Pella here? I have had Pella casements for about 30 years. No need to replace an operator yet. A little cleaning away of insect debris and some light oil is all I've found to be necessary.
