After seeing Tesla Model 3s and Ss be converted to LE use, it's nice to see an EV designed for LE use from the start. Most LE vehicles spend a lot of time idling, so an EV is a good idea for this type of use. Most pursuits are limited by agency policy (i.e. for what offenses and under what circumstances an officer is allowed to give chase) and state law, not the amount of fuel in a vehicle.

Two major things to take into account:
    1. Are they cheap to repair like Vic's?
    2. Can they keep up with fleeing criminals like the Charger's?

    • @sefan1317
      @sefan1317 Před 10 měsíci +3

Well depends how you define keep up. The EV’s will probably get them on the launch because the ev motors can be pretty torquey, but as for higher speeds, the gas engines will be superior. The blazers when they used gas weren’t meant to be sports cars so the ev one isn’t either. The chargers and challengers are so they’ll naturally be made and ready for higher speeds.
As for cheap to repair? Probably not. I see dashcam crash channels saying minor fender benders on teslas cost way too much to repair, sometimes totaling the vehicle cause it hit a curb or something. And with all electric vehicles, you can’t just roll up to any mechanic shop and expect them to take/understand how to work on your vehicle. It’s a crazy amount of electronics. I also have to hope they don’t easily catch fire and burn way hot like the teslas can.

There is a reason some departments get EVs such as Teslas as a gimmick for occasional high speed, that’s only city departments where it doesn’t have a big patrol area or high speeds such as New York. Same as a department getting a 392 Charger even though it’s too expensive to operate and maintain for practicality.
My friends in departments have explained how it isn’t the viable for the conditions they should excel in. Not saying EV’s don’t work being good police vehicles, it just makes everything harder for basically small gain for the environment if anything. Otherwise they are a pain to work with.
My local department has that era Tahoe, Crown Vic, & Impala that I see every day. They also have the new era Tahoe, Charger, Taurus, and Explorer. All of them are maintained well and have their own roles they fulfill perfectly.
The older cruisers are in nice condition, including the Tahoe. Very spacious and has lots of room for everything. Doesn’t have many electronic driving aids that can interfere like some. They are most importantly tanks. Modern Tahoe’s that are much more fragile, especially suspension components. You can take an older one over any curb, even at a bad angle. Another department had a new one out of service for 2 months after hitting a curb the wrong way at 20mph that collapsed the entire suspension and wheel assembly. The same hit faster wouldn’t be that catastrophic on an older one.

First off, nothing is tested until its State Trooper tested.
I don’t understand how these are even feasible. The amount of equipment we run has over the years made PPV’s come with larger alternators. Let’s just go with my everyday equipment plug in. My computer, radio, emergency equipment, radar, LoJack, vascar, flashlight or flashlights (depending on what time of day I worked), my phone(s), my wireless puck, dash camera and my printer. Not to mention the vehicle itself so the car radio and AC. Oh and it doesn’t matter if it’s summer or winter that AC is blasting. I also drive about 400-500 miles a day and refill at least twice in my Tahoe or at least three times in my explorer when I had one. That not to mention working over my 10 hour shift which is on a regular basis now-a-days. Then sitting on the side of the highway on a collision with at the very least my rear decks flashing for an hour or more. Now times that by 4-9 times depending on the call volume, then account for traffic stops and running hot 1/2 the day to debris calls and blocking stuff. If you work anytime during the night, then you add on your spot light, take downs and dome light just to add more strain. We also need to account for more weight. You add a push bar, lights, rear partition (cage), window bars and rear metal storage with all our issued equipment. If you don’t think there is a lot of equipment, well my Tahoe is stacked to the headliner to the point I cannot see out of the rear window. The weight alone of the rear storage box needs be lifted in with a forklift during build up. Those EV’s will probably quit working at the 2-3 hour mark if we are lucky. I definitely don’t want the reason I didn’t or couldn’t make it to a call to be because my car wouldn’t allow me to.
Not only that but if I am low on fuel it takes me 5 minutes to refill my tank verses who knows how long for an EV to charge.
There’s just some things that shouldn’t go electric and honestly we all shouldn’t be forced into it. Look at the world we live in, listening to people tell us how we need to live our lives and how we need police has worked out great…

You would be amazed how many DAYS an EV can idle with the AC blasting. The Blazer EV has a 100kWh battery, and the AC will only draw 1-2kW at steady state max power. That's 50-100 hours (2-4 full days). The laptop, phone, radar, radio, etc. might add up to half a kW total. I don't think you realize just how big the batteries in an EV are, and how much power is in there. The average house only uses 33kWh per day. Meaning this EV could power your entire house for 3 days before hitting empty.
DC fast charging takes 30 minutes to get back to 80%, and they'll likely be full at the start of the shift.
You should try talking to people who actually own modern EVs, and you would see that your fears are completely unfounded.

The trooper's concerns are completely valid. Most EV fanatics try to validate their argument based on charge times. Somehow, you think sitting around for 30 minutes at a charge station multiple times a day would be a cool thing to do. Most of us would find that to be highly inefficient (especially for a cop). What people don’t understand is that the estimated 250 mile range with the police lights the air con or hear on depending on where you work plus a computer plugged into the vehicle is that this car in real world use would realistically have a true range of 120 miles especially as law enforcement works various shift for various counties or cities. I was pretty surprised when it said 250 miles. I started thinking about my small town and its police department. How it would basically run out of range after a few hours of patrols. They actively police here. Not just passive. So there would be usage. Would hate to be at the end of the shift with a low battery and end up having someone take off on you.

Structural rear chassis components that are reinforced to protect against rear collisions are always a plus. Countless accidents happen every year where law enforcement vehicles are rear ended when stopped on the side of the road by vehicles traveling at highway speeds. None of this is set up, basically GM creates half the system and then you have to hire a 3rd party to actually make it a police car and do all the physical and software configurations. So now think about how much extra this will cost on top of the purchase price?
These are unlikely to go into service, which is why GM is showing them off with obsolete CCS ports. GM likely has no real intention to sell blazers for another 2 years at least. What they sell in small volumes before their future redesign will be tiny. 1st generation EVs from companies like ford and gm just suck. Ford publicly admitted this fact over the last 6 months and is hyping their next generation while letting current EVs sit on dealer lots and bankrupt their dealers to get them out of the way.

Probably a good use case, as EVs are good for vehicles that need to "idle" a lot, EVs are extremely heavy which is good for pit maneuvers, EVs can have great acceleration which is great for pursuits, and EVs can offer a lot of interior room with a flat floor, good for making room for the cage and what not separating the rear seat area the bad boys go in. The only downside is that these are likely to be completely trashed after 8 years because when the battery is dead the battery replacement will cost more than a new vehicle, effectively totaling it. So you won't get some of the cost recouped by selling them private party.
