Any person that stops combing their hair is going to start dreading. Period. It's not a "black people style."
lol Dreading vs matting...so yeah.
JNne *freeform dreading happens without maintenance... so yeah.
In my country its quite normal that white people have dreads. Even in the 80s this was normal here.
Thank you!
That is true. Hair tangles if you don't brush it at least once a day. Dreads are just a way to control the tangling.
You are the most reasonable person I've heard talk about that topic. Seriously
+Julia Jolie I KNOW RIGHT!
it's just Common sense. unfortunately common sense in our society isn't so common1
Julia Jolie amen!
Why can't we just let people wear their hair the way they want... We shouldn't live in this world worrying about what other people think of our decisions... We live for ourselves. Not anyone else.
Why can't you let people say what they want?
Mr Raleigh isn't that hypocritical? i mean HE is also saying what he wants..
@nothing I said was hypocritical
ahah i meant by calling out on him for "not letting people say what they want" you are technically also not letting him say what he wants..
How, when I just asked a question? Go bother someone else
"Dreads are for everyone... stop the hate"
You are amazing.
No
Myproducts studios Productions why?
@@hannahkohl6053 lol
it is just hair!!!! Anyone should wear their hair how they choose. Jeez
Wilda Mondestin IKR! If it's on your head or it belongs to you then -Your hair , your choice how you style , cut, process or wear it! There is no opinion about it.

It's not just hair

Toxic Tears ahhh babe
@cloroxbleach god you should watch the full video
Woooow hellođ
I clicked on this video expecting it to be extremely racist but was happily surprised
same here, she's right with what she sais
ikr
Ancient Greeks, vikings, Celtics all wore dreadlocks, it wasnt a white thing or a black thing, it was a warrior thing, a spiritual thing, shit even Jackie chan rocked dreads in that one movie
***** It's a different style of dreads. As an Asian beautician curly hair and straight hair dreads differently.
***** I've seen Asian people with Dreads other than Jackie Chan lol
prove it......where are these pictures, because I would like to see them, you people need tools to get your hair that way,and then still they aren't really dreadlocks
BLACK JEW Nah, if you get your hair really dirty and tangly when u sleep with them all crazy, they just kinda lock together. You just have to be consistent with that
***** Probably depends on your hair texture. Mine only get more tangled when dirty
Black people should not be offended on white people having dreadlocks its not there hairstyle they are not the origins of dreadlocks they originated from India in the middle east not Africa.
+Gibson Callaway It originates from Egypt, Africa.
Jennifer w
Do ya research on google harris it shows it on there.
Gibson Callaway You do your research. it originates from ancient Egypt, Africa.
While yes dreads have origins in India, and the middle east, they really do have origins in Africa as well. And also super super white dreads have origins in ancient Celtic culture too.
youre white
"Dreads are for everyone" Yes, just a whole lot of yes.
The thing is... we've been a cultural melting pot since the dawn of human cultures. It's a beautiful thing.
It's 2016 I still don't understand why there is such a conflict over skin color. We are all human why should color matter???
I don't know, but there's tons of white supremacists in the South of the US, and that's pretty damaging to the human psyche.
You right
Katelynn Neagle
Its what the MAN wants, we stay ignorant to the system betraying us all when they convince us of dividing and conquering ourselves.
Rise Up. One Love.
Colour doesnt matter to you because you don't experience racism.
C 1. White people may not experience *systematic* racism but they can still experience racism by definition. 2. Why are you assuming someone is white without knowing them?
Thank you for being a rare and wise voice in amongst a whole load of hate, pride and miseducation.
only one race is entitled to wear certain hairstyles that is the human race
NO.

I'm not even humaphobic but human why you gotta discriminate like dat.

If You Have Hair, You Can Have Dreads, It's Not That Hard To Comprehend
Kinda is
Sauce Gotti All Hair Knots Up If You Don't Brush It, When Those Knots Tighten, Dreads Start Forming. Do You Understand That?
Kean Maynard its takes a long time to you hair to become dreads you cant just not brush your hair and wake up and boom dreads I have dreads and I been growin my stuff out for 4 years now they start of twist which is like dreads but their not locked hint the word dreadlocks and if you dont brush you hair it just get tangled..
Sauce Gotti There Was No Implication Of "Instant Dreads" In What I Said, It's Merely The Process In The Simplest Terms. There's No Need To Be Condescending, You Read Too Much Into What I Said
Kean Maynard All the white people I've seen on dreads videos or white dread videos they also say they get instand dreads like for one, this one person say she didn't brush her hair went to sleep woke up and nearly had a dread I've been havin dreads for 4 years so I KNOW it don't take 1 damn night and I assume thats what you were sayin
I always find it annoying when people say that dreads don't look good on people with straight hair, by implication they mean 'white people'. My skin is white, I am of European(as far as I am aware) descent, I have never had straight hair. My hair has always been a frizzy curl, and often very difficult to brush and impossible to get it to stay that way. I have dreads because I was sick of that crap, and didn't like having short hair. Personally I think that to say that only 'black people' can have dreads and that 'white people' can't have them, is to perpetuate the same racist dichotomy that tears lives apart.
Something Dreadful agree every 1 does what is natural we should not have these discussions do wut yu want 2 it's your life live it,,,the issue and long lasting thorn is wut happen and is happening today,,,any way do what yu want.
Let me just first say, I love your hair. I'm always being told that I'm being inappropriate for wanting dreads, because I'm not black, but it is always someone who isn't black getting upset. I agree with you 110%. Hair is just hair. That's all it is at the end of the day. I also get mad when people say that there is a black and white way of speaking. What are your thoughts on white people "talking black" and black people "talking white".
+Kalma Turner dude my gf really really doesn't want me to get dreads because of cultural appropriation... a hairstyle isn't contributing to racism man
fuckwad Right? My ex friend told me the same thing. Do what you want brother. If she loves you and knows who you are as a person, she won't care if you do or not.
Kalma Turner yea shes trippin and wont listen when I try to convey that to her but oh well haha
fuckwad Tell her that dreads are actually a warrior thing from different cultures. From Nordic, to Celtic, to Indian, to Asian and so on.
Kalma Turner she says it isn't about that, claims that when black women have dreads they face racism and prejudice in the work force , so me getting dreads contributes to racism somehow. idk its a lost cause haha
Black people who judge white people with dreads forget that the ancient Celts and Vikings used to dread their hair long before Rastafarians culture was introduced to white Anglo culture...just saying. So, to all my white counterparts, when approached by such racist judgements on white people with dreads, tell them to do their research.
That's what I think about when I think about dreads. Ancient cultures from all around the world. I think about different skin tones and languages and landscapes all doing the same damn motions for the same effect. Humans love their hair....
Well, yeah, cause they don't have the necessary fingers.
Lol they didn't DREAD their hair, they were dirty and never used water to clean themselves so their hair matted up own its own with shit in between it. To compare those nasty ass Vikings to black people who take proper care of their dreads each day is so disrespectful. Educate itself before preaching that "but white people did it first!" Bullshit
***** ok
.....what the actual fuck?
THANK YOU!
This was great!
I love you!
wow! babe!
Elise Buch hiya Elise, youâre great also
The first depiction of dreadlocks comes from Ancient Greece. People forget that in ancient times white people didn't have shampoo and oil build up would make their hair stick together especially if they were long. The Spartans hoplites wore formal locks as part of their battle dress, while Spartan magistrates known as Ephors also wore their hair braided in long locks. Even James the Just had dreadlocks all the way to his knees. Proto- Christians in Greece also wore dreadlocks as part of the Christian culture.
Even in the bible it says:
"All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow." - Numbers 6:5
The creation of dreadlocks in African doesn't have any ancient roots, in fact it is pretty new custom, no less than 17th century A.D. The only ancient record of locks in Africa is natural locks.
So I don't get why Black people have any say on white people wearing dreads, it just doesn't make sense.
Neat I didn't know that
I heard they came from India and other places but why is it such a big matter? Hair is hair everyone has it everyone has done things to it. To say where it originated is silly. Sharing is caring. I admire all cultures and their differences.
i dont think in a ancient Greece they have dreadlocks :p
ÏÏÏΔÎčΜη Ï
" Spartan hoplites while generally described as fair-haired wore formal locks as part of their battle dress.- "Hook, Richard (1998). The Spartan Army
" Spartan magistrates known as Ephors also wore their hair braided in long locks, an widespread Archaic Greek tradition that was steadily been abandoned in other Greek kingdoms." Sekunda, Nick (2002). Marathon 490 BC: The First Persian Invasion of Greece.
Early Christians have worn dreadlocks (lock or dread); there are descriptions of James the Just, first Bishop of Jerusalem, who is said to have worn them to his ankles; in the early 1st century Greece it was a Christian custom for many. - Glazier, Stephen D., Encyclopedia of African and African-American Religions, Taylor & Francis, 2001,

The Spartans did have slaves, they were called the Helots from Laconia and Messenia, this was after the Spartans conquered their lands, they were a cross between free men and slaves, they were paid wages but they were not allowed to own any property or leave Sparta, they were also white not black.
Other parts of Greece had other types of slaves. The condition of slaves varied very much according to their status; the mine slaves and the pornai (brothel prostitutes) lived a particularly brutal existence, while public slaves, craftsmen, tradesmen and bankers enjoyed relative independence. There was no slave trade at the time so all slaves came from local conquests, so most slaves were in fact Greek.
Black African slaves came to Greece much later when the Romans conquered Greece.
Also:
Shiva and his followers wore dreadlocks. According to Roman accounts, the Celts were described to have 'hair like snakes' Germanic tribes, Greeks and the Vikings are all said to have worn dreadlocks too and Yogis, Gyanis, and Tapasvis of all sects are the most famous bearers of Dreadlocks. I guess they had black slaves too..
The notion of black Africans being in contact with the Greek states and even some nut jobs claiming the original Greeks were blacks
the happiness in your voice when saying "dreads are for everyone" shows you love dreads lol
I'm white(extremely pale too) and I grew up in Little Haiti, Miami and I had dreads as a kid. Nobody ever fucked with me about it and it might be just because my hood knew me and didn't give a shit or whatever. When I came to atlanta I had to take them out so now I wear microbraids or cornrows, and I get mixed responses between "I like your hair" or "You're disrespecting the black community" or "damn the white girl got them cornrows" etc.
Like, if you're worrying about someone elses hair you got too much damn time on your hands
You're such a lovely, logical person.
+Twiggy Morris What I was thinking. She's amazing.
+DestructoPop seriously! if more people were this positive and lovely... the world would be a beautiful place.
THANK YOU! I hate hearing people say that white people can't have dreads. Hairstyles should not be limited to race or gender.
lol alright
*****
Ancient caucasians had dreadlocks as well.
***** Not every individual is accounted for their dumbass countries fucking actions. And most definitely, NO ONE is EVER defined by their skin colour. Absolutely no one. We need to shape the fuck up and show each other some respect. Everyone. Stop separating, when this generation needs to be closer and on the same page, now more than ever. These are fucked up times and its no time to start blaming each other when we could be getting along. Equality. Theres only 1. the peaceful (us who agree that women/men: gay or queer, people of all races, beliefs, economic classes and identities, are INFACT EQUAL) and 2. the unpeacful: (those still blame EACH OTHER because why?) Yes these are fucked up times, but why are we blaming any skin colour, when the real problem is the law enforcement, government, social media!
It's so true! Anyone can have dreads! :) Dreadlocks are a culture on their own with no limits to skin colour, gender or even sexuality.
Alya Kassam
dumb ass
Celts in Britain had dreads 2000 years ago - but I hearby give notice that I don't mind if people of other races copy this cultural icon.
***** Africans didn't have dreads they had a different method. 32shumble Also many other civilizations had dreads that are completely gone today that were proven before the Celts but that a whole nother discussion. No one owns a hairstyle. For America, people went back and forth and saw the hairstyle in Jamaica and applied the name dreads to negative and gave it to black people. In JA dreads are prideful and mean gifted and graced. Why can't we all just be cool with every race doing what they want? No one would ever want anyone to tell us what to do?
***** Look it up... Celts and Africans and Europeans had a similar style. Even Indians had similar dreads. Dreads the word, the name of the style originated in Jamaica. No one knows who invented that particular style. Celt, Indians, Africans, everyone did it differently. But the method used the most today, was from a style coined in Jamaica. So please get your facts straight and research instead of trying (very poorly) to school others. Thanks, now *points* the door.
HAHAHA You mad or nah? You really think I care about your feelings. Obviously by saying you don't care now I know your feelings are hurt. Think about it... Did I ask if you cared? And excuse me, this is CZcams and I don't believe you get to choose who responds to a public commet. Gtfoh. You are mad because you thought you knew everything and were sadly mistaken.HA! Take this as a blessing, learn something :).
***** Wow so Americanized. In Jamaica dreads are a good thing. You say hello and greet people like "Wah Gyan Dread?" What are you even talking about. In America they us the dictionary definition of dreads. American saw this as terrible but in the J to the A its thought as being closer to God spiritually. But if you looked it up and see where it originated and how those people used it you would see you don't know anything. I feel good that I do. Now you may GFTOH :)
+Kedah Miller (Sunshine) so, from what I kind of got out of your statement and belief that whites shouldn't wear dreads unless they understand the history and meaning... Or anyone of that matter.. Which I get because I get annoyed with people who bring up spiritual matters and clearly they don't know what they are talking about.. So then my question is: do you just judge those people because they are simply ignorant? I doubt it's meant to offend anyone if whites or anyone else wears them... They just either enjoy the look... I don't think it's wrong for people to like the look either, it's beautiful in its own way. I personally like the look but I would rather explore the many opinions of people out there about this style bias, that way I don't offend anyone, being white and all that. (Because everyone knows people of my color are heartless jerks because of other people's mistakes. Must be in the genetics! ~ eye roll~) Just because I do care about people's fragile feelings and whatnot.
this is a really pleasant video. I've always loved dreads and I'm Irish. the ancient Celts had dreads thousands of years ago. everyone should be able to express themselves however they think is beautiful without something saying they can't
If black people are allowed to have blond hair then white people can have dreads. It's not a big deal.
Black people also had blonde hair first my sir. Our bodies has every gene on the planet
Lupe Brooks I hope that's a joke.
Courtney Hicks lol
Courtney Hicks you're ignorant so of course you'd say that
Courtney Hicks first of all, I said Black people, not just African Americans. Second of all, Google is your friend.
Yes sister, dreads are for everyone.
My girlfriend is white and has dreads, all natural. Im half black we decided to use product to give my dreads a headstart. It's your own decision, but the key is time and patience!
If your hair can loc you should be able to wear dreads.
@First name Last name It still locs though, right?
@First name Last name That's not true. Most seems to take about a year. But there's some of us that start to lock right when we wash it or within a day of not combing. Some others can take a few or more years, but that's a rarity.
Wow so nice to hear a thoughtful, mature response on this subject. I've only ever heard black people talking about white people having dreadlocks in terms of "CULTURAL APPROPRIATION, THAT'S RACIST, OPPRESSIONNNNNNN"
my white boyfriend has ad dreads for 6 years. he takes care of them and looks hella sexy.
I doubt it đđđ
Lauren Brewer Agree my friend has dreads and she's Mexican but has light skin so some people think she is white and don't believe that she is Mexican which is stupid xD she looks awesome with dreads! đ
Glad to hear yall happy
Oh my god THANK YOU I currently have long blonde dreads and the comments I get on the races that "should have dreads" because a white person such as myself shouldn't have dreads I'm glad someone's talked about this issue
it's a hairstyle. If people are getting butt hurt over a hairstyle- simply a number of hair follicles placed in a certain matter - is childish and down right boring. There are much more important problems in our world than a hairstyle. Take a seat and re-evaluate your morals. Love your videođđŒđđŒđđŒ
It's such a relief to hear you. You make me feel lighter, I've been looking at dreads for a friend and some how ended up on video after video of hate. It's been a bit of a shock to be honest. Anyway, I just want to say thank you x
I love this video! I think it's so, SO important. Locks are not and have never been exclusive to one particular racial/cultural/religious group. Throughout history American Indigenous, Asian, Indian, Pacific Islanders, Middle Eastern, African, and YES even European people have locked their hair for a ton of different reasons. I'm full blooded Abegweit Mi'kmaq First Nation (aka Native American) and my people have been locking their hair farther back than oral history can say. But our tribe is a snow tribe, and we tend to be very light skinned and and often are mistaken for being Asian or Caucasian, and the amount of shit I've gotten for my locks is ridiculous. No one group has any sort of "claim" over dreadlocks. and to the POC's i see making the comments about thinking white people dont "deserve" dreads, you're only making yourself look ignorant.
Oh wow Sarahbella. One of my great, great, grandmothers was from PEI and Mi'kmaq. She married a Scots-Irish man. I too have been confused for other ethnicities and my lineage connection is very distant. I loc'd my hair 16 months ago for spiritual reasons. Very nice to see someone from that tribe :)
I'm Lakota and about to loc my hair, too many reasons to list. I've been told so many conflicting things about what to do with my own hair that I have just given into what I want to do. I'm glad there are other first nation people who agree with me. :)
+Sar>did research
>dreads originate in africa
>people who originate from africa are black people
>dreads are a black hairstyleahbella Scanlan Will quote this and end your ridiculous unfounded claims.
Hell yeah. Thanks for this. As a 'white girl' with dreads, it really sucks to read comments about how nasty our dreads are, and how we're posers and what not. I used twist and rip, no products, I wash my hair with baking soda once a week and let nature do the rest. My hair doesn't smell. It does, however, look a mess, but it's working itself out. And I don't care. I just want to take a minute to say that most of the hate I seem to get is from other white people who have seen 'salon' dreads and think mine are disgusting. Like, come on guys, we have the internet. Look up the history, figure it out. There should be no hate among or across races. It's your hair, do what you want.
You are a sweetheart, if only everyone thought like you what a wonderful world this would be.
Agreed. Too much hate in the world
I love your opinion. And i love dreads. Who cares the fucking skin color in 2016? :)
Dumb people.
As someone of Celtic ancestry that is honoring my ancestors by carrying on the tradition of elf locks, THANK YOU!
No matter what color you are, locks are a very spiritual thing. My family practiced the old Celtic ways for centuries in secret to avoid being burned at the stake. Thank you for acknowledging us and our own journeys with our faiths and cultures. â€â€â€â€
Avoid being burned...let me guess Englishmen??
Let people do what they want, it's not your life that they're living. Also race isn't important in the slightest anymore aside from what happened in the past.
shh... shhhhhh...
lmao. stop.
letszombiefck so you're agreeing that race isn't important in the slightest anymore aside from what happened in the past? ...
lmbo!
actually white people looks good with dreads just as much as black people
White women actually pull of dreads better in my opinion. They look like cute little Viking women. But I still prefer regular long non-dreaded hair.
Thank you for this! People have made me feel some type of way about my choice to have dreadlocks. I use no products besides shampoo and they make me feel beautiful and so are you!
I came across this vid randomly and really appreciated your laid back sincerity and positive vibes. Thank you and much respect
Black people don't have a monopoly on dreadlocks. I'm European and I've got long hair; if I don't brush it, it will dread naturally. All hair will...except maybe for Afro hair.
Most Afro hair dreads naturally...
All European hair dreads naturally.
I never said it didn't
I'm aware.
how so?
YES, PREACH. I'm native American and I wanna start dreading my hair soon. I've done a shit ton of research on them and been wanting them for years. But I always get comments like "white people shouldn't have dreads and you're shaming the us for wanting them blah blah blah" One, I'm not white. Two, Native Americans even had dreads in their history. When I clicked on this video I expected nothing more than another person hating on other nationalities for having dreads. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard out your opinion. Power to acceptance!
This legit brought a tear to my eye to hear this. I knew it already but you verbalize very well and your wisdom and beauty shines through like a prism. Thank you !
Great video, very well said! I'm hoping to start my hair in the next month, and have been doing SO much research. I've learned a lot and feel more confident in my wanting them every day, but I've also encountered a lot of hatefulness and ignorance, which is quite disheartening. I completely agree with your statement that "we can't expect others to accept us, until we accept each other". I love it...gotta stick together! Thank you for taking the time to address this.
I am a caucasian woman with dreadlocks, and I got mine on a very personal journey while I was spending some time healing from a bad trauma with the Great Mother on a vision quest (fasting in the wilderness). My dreadlocks came to be from an understanding that they are the roots that join my inner body, all of my experiences, and my mind to the ground, and they are here to keep me grounded and remind me of that. I wasn't actually thinking about black, white or any of that. To me we are all one and a hair style does not belong to a certain culture. I travel to India a lot to teach Yoga, and I see hindu's in the Himalayas with dreadlocks to the ground, and thousand year old sculptures of Krishna and Lakshmi who have dreadlocks. I wish this was not even a question in modern day - I think we have real problems to tend to as humans. Bless.
I agree with you xx
^ ME HONESTLY
***** not even being funny but I had to lol at your comment. Truthfully I agree. On the flip side I feel this person is being genuine but it still sounds like a crazy ass hippie vision quest
+Cori Wright THE ANCIENT ARYANS, CELTS, VIKINGS AND PEOPLE OF THE NORTH OFTEN HAD DREADLOCKS. DREADS DEFINITELY DONT HAVE ONLY AFRICAN ROOTS!
+Cori Wright Beautiful sister, Indian sadhus was probably first with long dreads.
Hello from Scotland :) I just wanted to say I loved your video and your point of view, thank you for your fair and kind video
Great video!!!! Love the positivity
Love this video, love your hair. I am mixed with super curly hair that dreads naturally, I have been debating for a long time and I think I am ready to take the plunge :)
Its sad to see all ethnicity's bashing each other in the comments. Everyone needs to realize that we are all one and should not separate ourselves by what our skin color is, our type of hair, or where we were born. Instead lets think about how everyone's first ancestors were originally black from east Africa. That meaning we all came from the same skin color. We are all brothers and sisters.
Thank you for posting this. Skin has colour, not rules. That goes for EVERY race.
i love your perspective i've been hoping to hear someone who thought with such an open mind, i truly love everything about your video.
An excellent and well thought out video. Thank you!
Beautiful video. We are all descendants of one man and one woman. Regardless of what colour(s) we are now, thousands of years later, we are all members of one race -the human race.
No we aren't
K Fizzey nah my mom is like a cat. She can have multiple fathers for the same litter so I've got three dads.
raya sessoms we wouldnât be able to breed if not u idiot grow tf upđâđœ
â€ïž Thank you so much. I was scared to even click on this video. Worried I'd just upset myself. Expecting a hate video. Sorry for judging so quickly. And thank you so much for giving your positive opinion. This made me feel good.
Thank you so much this was so needed!
thank you for posting this! đ
Thank you for your support,I agree that it doesn't matter what color u r if u like doing anything and it brings u joy then go for it,we really gotta get shit together and just let everyone be happy, all the hate needs to stop period. Everyone would be so much happier if we would all just love each other.
Very well put! You are awesome! Apparently the Celtic people from 275 BC (When they started covering more areas) ... Eventually some tribes of Celtic became knowing as the snaked hair people. The snake haired people had many tiny braids or dreads. Dreads & other hair styles came a long way. For some it was a way of life... honor to have long hair. Some Native women use to cut their hair when grieving for their loved ones. To let others know, if they must. I am Native-Italian. I get picked on left & right. I get called Sqwa, savage, Crazy Indian, etc: ... & Now, now i have my hair in the Marley Twist. I love them. People ask me do i just stop washing my hair. Um No... of course i wash my f**king hair. If people stop fussing & labeling other's appearances wrong... this world would be a lot better. Love & Peace.
P.S It doesn't matter where a certain style or a way of life came from or who may have started it first. We are all here now, show some compassion... cause you're gonna need it my dear ones
Thank you so much, for taking the time expand on this topic. I saw a girl on tv show who had them and I absolutely fell in love and mostly just wanted to try it. After expressing my thoughts of this to my roommate they had made feel like crap telling me how I was downgrading a whole culture. At first I thought that didn't make any sense I wanted to try because I loved it? But I didn't want to offend anyone so I started looking around and you really put it perspective for me. So thank you again you are a beautiful person.
If your roommate said you are "downgrading" a whole culture you should never listen to a word they say.
They are ignorant on many levels. The hair on the head of every human on this planet will dread and has nothing to do with race/color/hair.
Also there is no such thing as "downgrading" a culture. Maybe DEGRADING a culture but even that is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.
Your roommate has shitty opinions.
People that say "white people shouldn't have dreads" really need to do some history.
You're the type of people we need in the world, thank you.
That's so damn rude. Nobody should tell another person what they can do with their hair.
Thank you so much for this video! It was just the thing I needed to hear today! Blessed Be!
I love ur positivity!! Im mexican live in Detroit n i jus started my dreads a wk ago n i get dirty looks some times n thought mayb they felt offended .but u made me feel so much comfortable sayin wut u sed. Thank u!!
thank you! I really love that you are so open minded and lovely! I personally don't call my locks dreadlocks because I understand when african americans are offended with white people having "dreadlocks". If you look back in history it was about fighting against the white society and because many whites back then thought they were nasty they called them DREADlocks and they were kind of proud that they were fighting against this and the name is/was for the brave blacks who were fighting against the opression of the whites (sorry if I got anything wrong or if I didn't explained everything right). For me I call my locks fairy/elf locks because of the celtic story: "When young children, especially girls, wake from an eveningâs slumber with tangles and snarls in their hair, mothers with a tradition of fairy folklore might whisper to their daughters that they had caught fairy locks or elf-locks" and you get bad luck if you brush them out. I think it's very lovely and so I call mine that way. sorry for all of the mistakes I made english isn't my mother tounge. have a nice day :)
my opinion...My hair my rules...period. There's no room for debate. You do what you want and don't give 2 shits about the opinions of other people! Thx for the vid! ur awesome!
I love your video. I started my dreads on my sober date Oct 12 2013. They kept me busy during some really hard times coming off of drugs and alcohol. Now they are a constant daily reminder of that hardship and of the daily spiritual battles I face.
P.S. Love ur dreads!!
Peace
Thank you for your thoughts. I am considering dreading my hair and am in the processing of gathering information. I really appreciate your perspective.
I agree! Great video! All cultures did it, doesnt matter who was first! Everythings always a "us first, super competition totally win" thing with some people. Its not like the one culture sent a letter to another asking "hey yall, you guys didnt happen to do the dreadlocks thing yet, did ya?!...just wondering cause were totally gonna own this thing! PS: please forward this to every other damn civilization you can think of. Peace." Great video, its hair, do what you want.
Amen
right!
im a black man with dreads. i believe every body has the right to do whatever the fuck they want......but maybe thats just me
It is
+Sauce Gotti nope
+GarudaLegends "#whitegirlsdoitbetter" isn't only racist but also let's be real we all know black girls are magical âš
?
Just to add. I never needed any product ever, to lock my hair and I don't ever let it stink or get nasty.
thank you so much! This topic was starting to frustrate me but you brought some logic to the world. thank you
Some nords who had very minimal if not no interaction with blacks had dreads
THANK YOU! Yes I capslocked that! Finally someone who speaks the truth about dreads! I love you for this. Most people just don't understand that dreads on white people also come naturally over time. I mean if I don't comb my hair for a while you see little baby dreads pop out anyway! Its a natural process for crying out loud. Sure you can help the process go faster by sectioning and crocheting. But naturally it would work the same way.
You can have quicker results with the processing, but the dreads will be less healthy and possibly fall out later. All natural neglect/freeform dreads are the best way to go.
I honestly love everything you say in this video!! you are so smart and wise! :) definitely subbed you!
Love you girl. Thanks for the positive message!!!
Ojiru (and all people talking about cultural appropriation). I am a white woman with dreadlocks and guess what ? Two Zimbabwean guys made my dreadlocks, IN Africa ! I travelled for 2 months all around Southern Africa and nobody ever told me anything about appropriating their culture, not a single fucking time ! In fact, they were all happy to see me with dreadlocks and a lot of people came to talk to me and tell me they liked my dreads, they gave me tips about how to take care of them and washing them and everything, and walked with me to become friends. So I don't care were dreadlocks came from, if it's Africa or anywhere else, I love my hair, I love Africa and the fact that I'm white (I'm not american, i come from switzerland) doesn't mean I'm a racist bitch and the fact that my ancestors were stupid cunts doesn't mean I AM ! So because I am white and because my ancestors were assholes you have the right to insult ME ? I am fucking tired of people insulting white people because of our ancestors ! Insult our ancestors, insult us if we are assholes but what our ancestors did have NOTHING TO DO with what we think, who we are and how we act. I would love to apologize for what my ancestors did to yours BUT, I didn't do it, if I could I would tell them to go fuck themselves but I can't. I'm sorry about white privilege and I'm sorry that non white people have it harder to live in there, and I'm fighting against this every single day. I'm sorry for you but you are the ones dividing people and being fucking rude ! I know some people are still racist assholes but they are not all of us and being so rude like you are is exactly the same.We are one, we all come from earth and it really is time to stop hating each other and bitching about each other. I love people, no matter if they're african, asian, caucasian, indians, wearing dreadlocks, having no hair or whatever, and I'm not sorry for being white, I am who I am and my color does not define my way of thinking and my behavior.
lmao but I bet they laughed at you when you weren't looking
Look, why do you care if people insult you on the internet. It makes absolutely no difference to you. Because you can just go outside and go back to having all the privilege in the world. Store clerks will be nice to you, you can go anywhere without question, wear any thing, act any way. The fact that you do not acknowledge that and get offended when a PoC says "I don't trust you" makes you racist, locs or not.
Ojiru your aim is just to be rude so just be rude with yourself, I'm done with you.
You weren't going to listen to me no matter what I said and you know it! You just wanted to talk about yourself and play victim. Typical ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
Ojiru You have issues. Really. Such a pitiful person LOL.
Wow so much love in this comment section, is this real life?
I wish more of the world was like this comment section.
Much love from LA
Truly a breath of fresh air to watch this video. When I read the title, this was not what I was expecting at all. I had locks for a while. It was a liberating experience to detach yourself from caring about your hair constantly. Just one less materialistic concern that allowed me to enjoy other things more. But, there is a lot of controversy surrounding dreadlocks. You're right @nappy headed black girl , many people do not do proper research on the topic. And I think many white people who decide to lock their hair were inspired by the beauty of the locs on a black person, so it's interesting that some people think how they do. Food for thought, for sure!!
It's always good to hear about topics from someone with a different perspective than my own, thank you for being informative.
My hair is super thick and long. it tries to dread itself. all the time. and I'm (mostly) white. i don't use anything. I'm constantly fighting the dreads from birthing themselves... lol but at some point if i keep growing this hair it's going to end up being dreaded.
it's practical, I know it can be washed still, and it's trying to do it anyway. why fight it?
I have naturally curly hair and I totally feel you, my hair will dread itself. The other day in one of my workout videos I point out how it looks like I have dreads. My hair gets super nappy.
I'm white with thick curly hair that dreads naturally. The curls separate and dread. I have a black friend who's african textured hair doesn't dread pretty naturally. It turns into a carpet. One big nasty mat. It's not about black or white. It's an individual thing.
u dumb fuuck any black person can grow dreads naturally its called free forming the fuck are u talking about? dreads ant for u white fucks it dnt even suit u stop stealing our culture, do u even kno the orgins of dreads?..... cut that shit off yo head
waveycarter stealing our culture...? Anyone who lives in the US is so culturally diverse that this sort of racism shouldn't exist anymore...is the internet a part of YOUR culture? Are your clothes a part of YOUR culture? It's quite hypocritical to have such a strong racist opinion when you "steal" just as much culture as anyone else. It's called unity - One Love. We are all brothers and sisters. The more we set ourselves apart, the more we hate and the more we hate the more we set "our" cultures back hundreds of years. Light up the darkness brother.
waveycarter I'd also like to add that two of my greatest influences in how I perceive the world and just basic simple life philosophy are Martin Luther King and Bob Marley. If ALL of us of ALL races learned how to love and think like those two men, this would truly be a better place. If we all learned to see with eyes of unity rather than division we would better both ourselves and others. "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually. We have learned to fly in the air like birds and swim in the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers." Martin Luther King.
waveycarter There is perception and then there is reality. A perception is not reality. Which is why it is called a perception. Your perception is that all white people are bad and are racists and that is not true. My girlfriend is Mexican and I have both Latinos AND African Americans in my family. I, personally transcend race brother. I'm trying to find unity with you. You are using hateful and racist words whilst calling me hateful and racist. Racism comes from ignorance. Rise above it man. If your perception is that white people are racist and hateful.....why then lower yourself to that standard!?!?!? It is senseless and without reason. I never said white people started dreads. Neither did the last guy. To be honest I really don't know where that part of your comment even came from. But my point is that it doesn't matter. It would make just as much sense for me to say that it is "stealing" from the Latino culture if you've ever eaten Mexican food. That's an extremely ignorant accusation for me to make. It's an extremely beautiful thing to embrace other cultures and accept them and build them up rather than set them back or tear them down. So yes, I will tell that "Martin Luther shit" to YOU. Not blacks. You are your own person and accountable for yourself, not your race. I actually have several black friends that would tell you the same thing. Hate comes from individuals, not races. You and I are perfect examples. I was taught to judge no one and love everyone. Especially those who hate or judge me. So in essence, you hate me for no reason blindly because of the color of my skin and I love you for no reason blindly because you are a human being just like me. We have outward characteristics unique from one another, but that is it. We are both people and both worthy of love and respect. Neither of us being less important than the other. There is nothing that you can say to me for me to change my perception. You can hate me all you want to, but I will always choose willingly and gladly to love you anyway. Your perception is hindering you from experiencing many beautiful things in the short life you are allowed to live by the God who gave it to you. But that is your choice to waste your precious life hating everyone. Rise above. Light up the darkness.
It's another matter of perception vs reality. Yes, there are a lot of racist white people. But there are a lot of racist people period. And it's because of racist people there is still racism and hate and all of the like. Not because of racist white people. It would be no different to say its because of racist people with brown eyes. color of skin or any other attribute of a racist person is irrelevant. There is racism and hate because of racist people, not because of white people. There has been hate and racism and slavery way before white people were. The jews were slaves in Egypt for 400 years. It's all a matter of who we choose to be as individuals. Will we choose light or darkness? Good or evil? Love or hate?
I love your video and the positive message. I've never had to use products on my hair. My hair is very tangled naturally and I got tired of brushing it out every day. So I made smaller neater dreads and let my hair do what it naturally wanted to do.
Love this video!!! Iâve wanted dreads my whole life and I hear the negative remarks a lot more often than I thought I would. Thank you so much for being so positive and amazing!
Hairstyles sure do bring out the racist in black folks.
There is so much misinformation, so much ego, so much of that just floating about everywhere. Overstand this: WHITE and BLACK are not skin colours first of all. Your skin has a tone, and its neither white or black. So people innerstanding this should stop using such terms. Being a hostage of ones own rational thinking, is what brings people to do this, which is what? Its the need to define everything, put everything into categories. That is left brain thinking. You can force/train/program yourself to be FREE. You just have to want it, read about it, be it, give it importance.
Now.. Ego. It causes a lot of problems, and it only exists to give you false hopes, to attach emotions unto something that doesnt exist. If everyone abolished ego (to a bare minimum, not completely) then obviously lots of problems would be solved. Thats what spirituality teaches (not only that), meditation (different types of meditation, to learn what it is).
Locks for some people is more about the transcendence, like it is for me. You transcend other peoples opinions and you transcend your own ego. You feel freer by not caring about other peoples expectations (caring way less, actually, I know you overstand) and actually you learn that those expectations are not real. You create them in your head. You create paranoias and safe zones. Humans always resort to this bi-polar type of being. This false in-existing dualism that keeps people in trance, occupying themselves with what people think, and not realising you are not being what you want to be.
I know you innerstand this. I-tinually.
so well said
soaring eagle I appreciate you saying that, and you have a cool name!
What I like to do is not attach myself to possessions. In this case Im not talking about material possessions. Im talking about mental ones, like ideas, words, actions. I want to help and share what I have inside me, so we can walk towards progress. Holding on to ego only causes trouble for mind, body, spirit, soul.. My views, obviously.
jefersonvilaede
u should come by www.dreadlockssite.com you';; feel right at home there :)
jefersonvilaede Have you seen the video about we are all shades or orange?
Tierra McLellan greetings. No i havent, just tried to search for it and didnt find it. I suppose its similar to what I said?
o my god this is the best video about dreads i have ever seen/heard in my life I'm so glad that you put this up. there is way to many people that are hatin white people and dreads and i really love this so much. i don't really understand why there has to be a dread stereotype for certain people like its my life life it the way you want i wish everybody can just figure it out. keep posting whatever you want and share your opinions nobody can take that away from you. Peace and love to ya
you go girl!! Thanks for all the positivity, videos like these are so important
Dreads are/were found in cultures all around the world, of all ethnic back grounds, we are all the same race people , just different breeds,.. rant for peace and understanding , not hate and bigotry
In humans, melanin is the primary determinant of skin color. It is also found in hair, the pigmented tissue underlying the iris of the eye, and the stria vascularis of the inner ear. In the brain, tissues with melanin include the medulla and pigment-bearing neurons within areas of the brainstem, such as the locus coeruleus and the substantia nigra. It also occurs in the zona reticularis of the adrenal gland.
The melanin in the skin is produced by melanocytes, which are found in the basal layer of the epidermis. Although, in general, human beings possess a similar concentration of melanocytes in their skin, the melanocytes in some individuals and ethnic groups more frequently or less frequently express and humans have very little or no melanin synthesis in their bodies, a condition known as albinism.
Because melanin is an aggregate of smaller component molecules, there are many different types of melanin with differing proportions and bonding patterns of these component molecules. Both pheomelanin and eumelanin are found in human skin and hair, but eumelanin is the most abundant melanin in humans, as well as the form most likely to be deficient in albinism.
I saw some good commentary on another website that I thought was relevant to this type of cultural appropriation and need for confirmation by the people whose culture is being used:
"one black person saying itâs okay doesnât make wearing those dirty mops on your head and calling them dreads any less racist or appropriation.
Hereâs the thing. If you have to search the internet for one black person to make your thing okay when several thousand have told you itâs not you probably shouldnât do that thing. That thing you are doing is probably racist." -dynastylnoire
Kali Bru Okay, listen here, little one!
1) I'm not racist, I have white friends!
2) Honestly, I wish I could go back to my native roots; apparently, the government officials of the African countries are going to push out white people and bar them from coming back in, and once that happens and the natives there can reestablish the really cool economy we once had, the African countries can go back to being the prosperous, wonderful countries it once was before white people showed up and fucked everything over, and I can be a part of that!
3) One cannot be mad at another just because the other stated facts. :/
Now, don't be upsetti, have some spaghetti! Good day to you, kid!
Kali Bru PS. Since you got mad because you didn't like how non-black people hair is called "dirty mops", maybe the best way to handle that anger may be to chop off your... whatever those things on your head are called?
There's nothing racist about a hairstyle suited for HUMANITY in general. Just because a bunch of black people get all offended because some whites have dreads doesn't mean its racist. It means they're not comfortable in their own skin. Black people straighten and relax their hair to make it seem "white". Who gives a shit? It's fucking hair. I came across this video while looking at timelines.. Its awesome. Very few people search for a black person to agree and to find validity in their hairstyle choices.. That's ridiculous. Racism is a joke. You need to let that go. I'm white and I have dreads. I love them. And if a black person gets offended.. Oh well.. They can stop being full of themselves. Cuz they don't matter when it comes to my hair. Lol. People that dub things as racist are the reason its even still around. Do your "race" a favor and stop focusing on it. Lol.
Koley M I would spend an entire hour or two writing an article-length response to this to show just how wrong you are, but Ojiru's comment below mine sum it up best:
"White people made fun of black Americans for so long, especially if they have dreads, calling them "dirty" and "ghetto", and I've known so many black Americans who have been ashamed of their hair and shaved it off because of white insults. and then white people have the audacity to just turn it around and make it a fad and tell PoC that we're overreacting when we tell them they're appropriating our culture.
This is why we don't trust you"
You guys literally cannot be trusted to do anything because you guys still fuck people of color over and somehow still kill us in order to live a happy life at the expense of ours.
Plus, black people don't perm their hair to get it "white people straight" anymore; white people's hair break too much. Not only that, but many white people seem to think that leaving their hair to get dirty and matted and turn it into some sort of rat's nest is somehow comparable to the care and wonderful management black people's locs, and that's a gross, unhygienic insult.
Ivoriania Phillips What I've always wondered is why White people think they have a monopoly on straight hair. That is the only thing going for them in these types of arguments. Then they want to try and get smart by making these erroneous comments about Black women trying to mimic the appearance of White hair, when I'm certain that Black women are not running to the beauty supply store to buy 100% Scandinavian limp cuticle Remy.
love love love ..... thanks for your sharing.... you go girl ... đ
I've been working on free form dreads for about 5 months now and this is something I've been worrying about quite a lot. thank you.
Lots of love and respect
