I'm glad Trujillo is making money now he deserves it. But he's completely wasted in Metallica. Rob is one of the sickest players alive.

Don't completely agree with this. I think Freedumb is a good album, and like it better than anything they did after Lights, Camera, Revolution. Just for the songs Freedumb, Cyco Vision, and We Are Family. You should re-listen to World Gone Mad, it's better than 13. 13 was just "meh" to me, and nothing about it makes me want to listen to it again. Join the Army is in my top 3(as a fan of hardcore and crossover). I know I'm alone in this but as I stated above I really dislike Art of Rebellion, mostly for Mike's change in vocals. They irritated me. Like a few songs and that's it.

As much as I respect The Art of Rebellion for it's experimentation, no way is it a more enjoyable album than the first two. Especially the first, that's a staple. Arguably their best album along with How Will I Laugh imho.

  • @cycodamo
    @cycodamo Před 3 lety +9

    Here's the real ranking list:
10: Free Your Soul and Save My Mind - fairly derivative, can tell it's inspired by the music of Korn and Marilyn Manson which were popular at the time. Highlight: Bullennium
09: 13 - desperately uneven but has some gems like God Only Knows and Who's Afraid?
08: Freedumb - the first album in ST's catalogue that had quite stupid lyrics but there's some classics here like Cyco Vision and We Are Family.
07: Suicidal For Life - melancholic and absolutely pissed off. Rocky George gives a heroic sendoff in Love vs Loneliness, which is an amazing song.
06: World Gone Mad - amazing album made even more amazing given how late it's come in the band's life. Highlights: Happy Never After, Get Your Fight On, the epic and melancholic Nick Cavesque sounding STill Dying To Live which has the familiar Mike Muir trick of simply using the second half of the song to play the riff in the first half of the song at double speed.
05: Lights Camera Revolution - yeah classic album with YCBMD, Alone, Send Me Your Money. Essential ST listening.
04: Join the Army - insanely good punk metal followup to the debut.
03: Suicidal Tendencies - nothing sounds as hard or as raw in music. Nothing.
02: The Art of Rebellion - the absolute aural masterpiece of the entire ST catalogue. Rocky George's solos will make you weep.
01: How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today - this is the best album of all time. Unimpeachable.

Taking EPS, compilations and side projects into consideration, I would go with the following Top 7:
    1) How Will I Laugh Tomorrow…
    2) Suicidal Tendencies [first album]
    3) Widespread Bloodshed… Love Runs Red [No Mercy]
    4) Join the Army
    5) Feel Like Shit… Deja Vu [EP]
    6) Lights Camera Revolution
    7) Still Cyco After All These Years [comp] - mostly for the re-recorded Join the Army songs, which are pretty decent.
Anyone not familiar with the No Mercy album, it is totally worth seeking out - even though several tracks were re-recorded for the “Feel Like Shit..” EP. The album was hard to find for decades, but did get a reissue in (i believe) 2014 on CD and vinyl, and includes liner notes from Mike Clark. I am fortunate to have first pressings of “Widespread Bloodshed…” on cassette and vinyl - some of my most valued items in my music collection.

Good overview and I think I pretty much agree with your rankings. Just one point I wish you had expanded on with your last number one album you said it was somewhat reflective of what was going on music at that time. And I would like to of heard you expand on that a little bit more. Because when it came out I thought it was somewhat unique and almost the The perfect classic example of crossover thrash. And obviously that had been going on at the time with several bands but that album was the best of the bunch. And then obviously there were the More popular thrash and speed metal bands at the time. And SI was hanging with those dudes too. So are you talking about that genre when you say what was going on at the time? My point being is I can’t think of another band that was really threading the needle between crossover thrash and actual speed metal as much as these guys what kind of puts them in a class of their own. And therefore not reflective of the music that was going on at the time exactly

Cool. Thanks for that. We have slightly differing opinions on some stuff. I mean I really enjoy Freedumb...Love the title song, Cyco Vision and We Are Family are all great tracks. I actually like it more than Suicidal For Life, or the Art of Rebellion. I know I'm alone in this opinion, but Art of Rebellion is my least favorite album. I hated Mike Muirs vocals on that album. There\s a few tracks that I like eg. Nobody Hears, Gotta Kill Captain Stupid, and I Hate You Better(love that title), but over all his vocals irritate me. Mike was singing like he'd just found true love and wasn't angry anymore. I guess my biggest issue was I loved Lights, Camera, Revolution, and at that time I was still angry and I wanted more of that. I agree that World Gone Mad is better than 13. I can understand you're top 5 ranking. I think Lights, Camera, Revolution is a thrash classic, and one of the best albums of the genre, but I probably reach for How Will I laugh, and Join The Army more. Where Lights is a thrash classic of that genre, Join the Army is a classic for the crossover genre. I fucking love that album. And How Will I Laugh is perfect. My cousin and I still quote the one liner "There's Nothing Wrong with This Brain" from the music video. lol. Cool thing about the original Institutionalized video from the first album is that Rocky George is already in the video, and so isn't Tom Araya. Suicidal and Slayer are both L.A. bands so they must of know each other. Plus Tom is Chilean, and ST have always had a strong Latin connection. My biggest issue is the lack of credit that Mike Clark gets. Everyone goes on about Rocky George, but if you ever follow the credits for the songs Mike Clark wrote a lot of material, the 2 Mikes wrote the bulk of the songs. Rocky could really play, but Mike Clark was a better song writer. That dude needs more credit and I miss him in the band.

Agreed about how important the S/t album is - it annoys me that just about every documentary about hardcore completely ignores Suicidal. That's probably due to Hardcore's elitism, and the fact Suicidal "sold out" and went metal.

      4. How Will I Laugh Today

So, i have the same favorite ST album, but i also really like Free Your Soul, because i'm also a fan of Infectious Grooves and that album has the funk influence but mixed with hardcore punk. I know i'm in the minority, but i enjoy the album a lot. Public Dissension is so badass! Okay, as a whole it's got some problems, some filler tracks for sure.

I think T.A.O.R is a bit like the movie Helloween III in that, if peeps could forget it was a Helloween movie without Michael Myers (or in this case an ST album), they'd wake up to just how good it actually is.

    3. How will I laugh.... - Greatest Thrash album of all time....Still f.cking Awesome. Powerful stuff.
    4. Demo. - Raw. How Punk should be.
    5. The Art of Rebellion - okish. Musically absolutely Masterful. Rocky and Clarke combo Amazing...Vocals weak.
    6. Lights Camera.... okish. Good When and IF you are in the mood for...... Funk Metal..
    7. ......the rest is aaaaabsolute Horseshite. Just buy the first 3.
*Side note. - Rocky George is the Best Lead Guitarist, 2nd only to Hendrix. His mastery has got to be THE Most under rated musicianship of Any artist Ever.

    - IMO, Lui pisses All over Rob on Bass. They should kept him and his Punk sound.

For me the most special are still cyco after.. suicidal for life... the one with the guard and the painting.. light camera revolution and the debut.. and Groove family cyco from IG. Probably cuz I started listening in 92 and saw em Open for 'tallica in 93 in Sweden. Followed by club shows supporting Groove family cyco mid 90.s
I Think vocal performance and production is really lacking on join the army .. so I never got into it like the debut album where punk production works.

I was right with you on 9 and 10, but I am surprised to hear "Suicidal 4 Life" beating 13 and World Gone mad. I would mostly keep your ranking but just drop Suicidal 4 Life dropped at 8...
Musically it was good.... but the fucking lyrics... I felt like this was them trying to make a bad offensive album just to get off their record label. I wont speak for the other members, but for Mike it just felt like he didnt give a fuck (like one of the song titles) and didnt really put any effort, especially that fucking album cover AND album name.... Its lame sauce for the most part (lyrically speaking). Its honestly a guilty pleasure for me tho I really do love the song "no fuckin problem" as a personal hit that I def jam out to.
Not critiquing your critique, just sharing mine on the albums, I just been waiting to get that off my chest about that album for a long time, glad to hear someone else talk about it!
