I bought the performance model for this reason. After a quick test drive, I couldn't buy anything else besides the performance model.
My Honda Civic comes standard with same noises!! Oh wait, that’s me ! Lol

Lesson we learned: test drive a vehicle before purchase.
No KIDDING!? Anyone who's actually driven several cars SHOULD know AND do that! I'm STILL astounded at how many people fail to realize how important a test drive is.
And this is yet ANOTHER problem with Tesla - NO DEALERSHIPS!!! This is why you have missed sales opportunities by Elon Musk. When people are expected to pay $50,000 for a car that runs on batteries, well...they are going to want to test drive such an expensive car first. Blindly buying a car online just doesn't work for 90%+ of consumers.
@@jaroessa294 They don't have dealerships because you can't buy the car there, but you can test drive a Tesla at their showrooms.

I have an electronic engineering degree, a semiconductor science PhD and have been steadily becoming an EV nerd for the past 1.5 years, but this was the first time I'd ever heard about reluctance motors! Learning new things is amazing - over an hour of Googling and research later, I'm now musing over the future of EV motors, now that I have a better grasp on the differences between induction, permanent magnet and reluctance motors. Thank you for all the knowledge, insight and wisdom you share with us all, Jason :)
so what kind of motor does the RWD Long Range has? Is it the same as the Mid Range or better?
I'm a retired aircraft engineer and I'm not surprised at your excitement about electric cars. I just returned a leased Ford Focus Electric and replaced it with a Chevy Bolt. From an engineering standpoint they are just an elegant solution to the problem of transporting people. Things like the simplicity of the powerplant/drivetrain compared to an internal combustion engine, the ability to fuel your vehicle at home, the efficiency, the instant power, low maintenance, etc. These are the types of things that appeal to me as an engineer. My second car which is a Fusion Hybrid feels archaic now, especially when it throws the occasional EVAP code.
Thanks for sharing, glad you're enjoying your Bolt! They're quite fun, and I love how Chevy implemented 1-pedal driving. I think their 1-pedal solution is the smoothest of all of them out there.
Calling a Modern EV simple is wildly inaccurate .... simpler than a hybrid, but vastly more complex than an elegantly designed ICE (achates power's engines for instance)
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic We leased the Focus EV for two years as a test to see if we could live with an EV. Even with it's puny 77 mile range we were sold on EV's. The problem is if you are shopping now, in the US, you pretty much have a choice of only two vehicles if you want a reasonably priced EV with over 200 miles range, Model 3 or Bolt. I didn't have the time to wait around for the new vehicles coming on line. So, based on what my budget would allow, I purchased the low spec 2019 LT model (only option equipped DC fast charging). So before local tax and license, I was out the door for around 25K (after fed tax incentive). From a practical standpoint it does what it is supposed to do. It certainly lacks some of the refinements I was used to in the lowly compliance Focus EV (which is actually nicely equipped). I assume the higher spec Premier version (heated seats, etc.) would have a more premium feel.
Evaporate code on Fusion Hybrid (if you don’t already know this) is likely caused by the little trap door that you press the fuel nozzle through to refuel - at least it was on mine. A little bit of carb cleaner sprayed in during a few open close cycles with a screwdriver - and - voila! Fixed. Interesting that I also own a Bolt. I like either of these cars for entirely different reasons.
So the Rotor engine isn't dead?
Glad this one is working better for you, it's a hell of a car. And red is the correct choice for the P3D, I went the same route :D
Would anyone ever buy any other colour for the performance model? Seems like it should be the default colour without requiring an additional charge.
I did the same with Audi. Bought an RS3, heard such great things about the 5 cylinder. Loved the car, but had regrets. Hated the manual seats, hated there was no view of the hood and just the dash, cramped interior and looked too much like an A3 to me. Bought the RS5 coupe and it's exactly what I wanted. Bigger car, wider, actually great seats in the back for a coupe, looks wicked and more usable torque down low for everyday driving. Test drive the car before you get it!!
Glad you’re loving you RS5! Love the way those look, never driven one but hope to sometime!

I've been driving a Model 3 long-range RWD for 6 months, and I've always felt like it had instant pedal response. But though the car starts moving immediately upon flooring from a dead stop, it does take a little for the acceleration to really hit its stride. The sweet spot seems to be ~25 to ~60. Still the best car I've ever owned. :D
I came for a car review.. I left with a Masters in Engineering.
Can confirm Tesla nerfed the torque application on prior models as the dual / P came to market. One of the earlier firmware updates to the RWD 3 LR killed off its low speed instant torque response so significantly that several owners started asking. Tesla denied the change, but quietly restored *some* of that torque in a later update. I had my car before any of those updates, and there was no evidence of torque ripple despite the car being quicker off the line than it is currently.
Allyn Malventano damn so this is like that theory of apple making older iPhones break through the software updates so that you buy the newest phone
@@LuneLuan Yeah, I wasn't too thrilled about it. We had the early Model 3's accelerating well above their rating, but then they were nerfed to be slower as to not steal thunder from the newer 'faster' models. Reducing the performance of *any* vehicle after purchase is not cool, even if that vehicle was performing above spec.
That's just bizarre. I guess this is the new economy where you don't own the things you buy (Kindle books, phones, Teslas) but you just lease them with manufacturers being able to modify your phone, delete your books or cripple your Model 3
Wait, so my M3 LR is slower now than it was when I bought it? This is the first I've heard of it. Is there video of the times before and after? Allyn, I know you race Model S, can you do some acceleration tests with your Model 3?
I would like to say I knew it but you wouldn't believe me! Nice upgrade! And my mistakes always cost me loads of money it seems!
I can imagine Jerime/James/Hammond on world tour being followed by the mid range car and looser driving it home with the sound effects on a loud speaker😅
Hey @Engineering Explained. Does the LR AWD Model suffer from the same laggy performance as the RWD? You mention the dual motors as adding more pep to the car, the LR AWD also has the dual motors.
Those cracks in the glass roof are a concern, I would get tesla to check that out and confirm if they are a problem or not. Due to the nature of tempered glass, all damage near the edges is problematic, and can lead to spontaneous failure ( -> exploding sunroof). It would be rather inconvenient if the thing suddenly turned into a convertible on you.
They're going to be here this week for the spoiler, I'm going to ask about it.
We also had a (much smaller) crack in our Porsche's panorama roof. Being brought to the chief mechanic's attention, it was clear immediately that it needs to be replaced - this crack should be treated the same way. We got a wonderful 718 loaner for the duration of the repairs (3 days) and the job was executed to our fullest satisfaction.
Good on you man. I have the model 3 performance and I haven’t regretted it for a minute.

Congrats! After watching this I’m really glad I didn’t go for the mid-range RWD. I thought about it but decided the price upgrade to the LR AWD was totally worth it. I debated the Performance but didn’t want to make the $ jump. Some days I regret that, but I still love my car. Im glad that it has that electric car instant shove. I’ve put 2000 miles on it in 3 weeks. I can’t stop driving it!
Hey Joe! I'm very torn between the P and LR AWD. I'm leaning between LR AWD incl. Autopilot or P without Autopilot. That is very similar in price. Got any recommendation for me? :)
I am honestly happy for you! One can see you enjoy it.
When I first watched reactions people have when they drive or ride in a Tesla, i felt they were either acting or exaggerating. Until I actually own one, yes, I can confirm that reaction is totally ligit.
Terrific video and great info. Ordered P3D thanks to the crystal clear overview you give. Many thanks!
I sold my very early Vin RWD Model 3 (Vin #89) for a Performance Model 3, I don’t regret it one bit! 😀
There's lots of early adopters who have that regret. The difference between the original Model 3 and the DMP is substantial.
Aussie2u I wouldn’t go that far, as the engine of the M3 is substantially stronger than the MSport. The difference in price is more substantial as well. A loaded M3 is pushing $80 K US.
I always thought they chose an induction motor in the front to be able to switch off its magnetic field completely, which then means you have near zero resistance from the (disengaged) front motor at cruising speeds. This is an interesting new insight, tx!
Also: love the sarcasm with the "thank you all for instructing me on how to use clamps, I never learned to use those during my engineering studies" ;)
It is true that by shutting down the input power IM rotates practically without resistance, but PMSM are not much worse in that regard since the average drag torque is also very low, especially for the better designed motors (which these are). However, in PMSM motors you need to optimise between torque and max speed for given voltage by design, which is achieved in IM by field weakening.

Great explanations on the motors. Between the fart noises and the acceleration I would crash that thing for sure. On another topic altogether I am sorely disappointed that your engineering education did not include precision measurement. Keep up the great content! I enjoy it all!!!
Lol, like engineering education is something smart. It's a 4 year college degree where pimple covered boys and girls learn basic things from 101 calculus etc. They are still average Joes. It's certainly not a law degree, let alone medical school.
Quick question: Is the AWD (non-performance) version using the same motor setup?
How much did they value your midrange when you traded it in or whats the difference between the two
I have the long range RWD 3. You can tell there is some limiting at low speeds. The acceleration is insane. It is like warp speed in regular driving. I can’t see any practical need for the car to be any faster.
Every last one of your points are valid. Especially not being able to defeat the traction control.
I'm definitely curious to try out the long-range RWD. Seems the put a decent hit on acceleration on the mid-range with 5.6 seconds, versus the long range RWD which is hitting 60 in under 5. Seems quite cool!
@@EngineeringExplained As fatboy mentioned, RWD is being limited on its 0-40 mph, after that, it performs similar if not better than AWD. Also, it has a better handling than a dual motor. I was about to trade in my RWD M3 for a Performance 3 but after drive testing the P3D, the feeling of suppressed speed was quite noticeable plus the handling hence decided to keep my car. The only time I would use P3D's quick acceleration was when I'm at stop light but since 97.3% of my commute is on freeway, there's no point on having higher top speed when I may get a ticket lol.
P3D is an amazing car... but the issues that came along with it plus the excessive energy consumption kinda pushed me away.
@@warlockhaseo3642Also comparing my wife's AWD Model 3 Long Range to my RWD Long range, while you do notice the extra snappiness in the AWD, the overall 0-60 times aren't that much different and my car has about 20-30 miles more range than hers. I'm also not totally convinced that some of the difference in snappiness is not just from the extra grip from AWD vs RWD. And definitely that's the case on wet pavement. I've also noticed that on hot days on dry pavement, the difference in snappiness isn't nearly so noticeable than when it's cold / wet pavement. Basically didn't notice the difference nearly so much last summer as I do now when it's below freezing and still running all weather tires on both.
@@warlockhaseo3642 thank you for your counter argument. I was about to go on Tesla's website to see the price difference but you talked me into keeping my LR RWD
It can be defeated. You just need an aftermarket device that plugs into the computer to disable it. I believe MPP sells it for the RWD version, for the performance version you just want to use track mode.
Do you still feel this way after the "pothole indecent". Or are you trying to find larger tires for your Performance now?
Curious how the traction and stability control disable works out on the performance Model 3.
Could you post some footage of the UI as well as how the AWD behaves on closed course?
Currently driving the regular 75D Model S and totally agree that the lack of ability to be able to fully disable driving aids takes a bit of fun out of the equation.
"They never taught me that getting my engineering degree" lmaoo.
You are right thinking that the delay you experience is put there by Tesla engineers. I did tune a couple of drive inverter and tried no torque ramp. The result was very jerky drive. So the game is what is fun but smooth enough for daily driving. As a general rule, torque ripple of an electric brushless motor is like 10 times less than ice. Nice work, thanks for sharing.
Great video and engineering explanations. Would the standard 2 motor Tesla address the responsiveness issues you had? That doesn't have track mode and is a bit slower but still insanely fast. I'm considering one when my lease is up and torn between the dual motor and the performance version
Great video explaining the differences between the two models. One quick question though. Do the performance models always come wiith the black door handles and door/window trim? I can't quite figure out how you get that black trim. I've seen performance models with the chrome trim too so I'm confused about which models come with that trim. Thanks for all the informative videos.

Those explications about the different electric motors technology is very interesting and informative, especially when you explain the impact on the driving caracterics. Thanks. FlSal27 It must be an issue because you can only buy rwd on the base car now.
FlSal27 I don't think the other cars share this issue, he noted this in the video. So far the torque delay is only in the Model 3 Mid-Range & Bellow.
It's all software control. They can reprogram it to accelerate any way they want. It's like tuning an ICE with laptop.

Is there ANY difference between the trim levels in brake performance and suspension?
That will say, what is a lowered suspension?

Does the dual motor long range (non-performance) also have the induction motor in the front? (So there isn't that torque delay)
Can someone explain what the finger/caliper method is for? I have never seen it til now.
Engineering precision way of 10/10 perfect measurement every time.
@@EngineeringExplained I see, but how do you actually do it? How does your finger translate to the thing you measuring?
Shane Martin well, first you choose the finger that's the right width (you have 5 convenient sizes to choose from), then measure the finger and voila, perfect measurement every time.
Michael Terrell Bingo! And, if you're really limber, you've even got 5 more sizes ready to hand, err, foot. Haha
Regen does away with big brakes. Your pads will last the lifetime of the car. Under normal driving you'll only need to use the brakes around 5mph and under cause that is when regen stops.
Yep! Unless you're really pushing it (track driving) you can get away without touching the brakes until about 5 mph.

@@ldever3 killing, not killed, -I think end of February- Feb 1st
I highly doubt that it is Switch Reluctance (SRM) but rather Synchronous Reluctance (SyRM) Motor. Sometimes "y" is skipped and that causes misunderstanding. SyRM makes more sense since there are a lot of topologies of SyRM with PMs which is usually referred as SyRM PM-assisted or SyRM hybrid PM- and these are awesome. One such is used in Toyota Prius and has efficiency of almost 98% which is insane and doesn't have issue with high torque ripple - almost none. I believe the efficiency was main reason behind using it as the main drive of M3, since induction motor used in MS and MX has peak efficiency of 89%.
Yet, i haven't seen one from Model 3, but that is something i've been speculating since it was first introduced.
