    The white building at the southern end of London Bridge highlighted in the opening sequence used to be the old post office telephone exchange. My sister was a telephonist there in the 1950s.
    My father and brothers all worked on the railway in various jobs. I ended up as a Signalman after various other rail jobs. Ended my days at Twickenham West junction box in the early 1970s.

    Lovely video; we actually enjoyed the inspector sands announcement. We were there today and platform 15 seems to be in good order but out of use. Also platform 9 seems walled off from platform 10 and there is no escalator to it either - if anyone who knows why this is a comment would be appreciated.

    Awesome video! It's a shame that before, London bridge station used to have a shed just like other terminuses, bit they don't have that anymore. It was really nice with the terminus shed

      The through platforms of the station were rebuilt in the mid 1970s. I remember the old destination indicators and the small footbridge connecting the platforms. There was no platform 5 before that for some reason, so if you wanted to avoid a meeting with someone you arranged to meet on platform 5. That was all done without any major closure. The through platforms were modified again when they were lengthened to 12 carriages. Not quite sure when that was. That was also done without closing the station for any significant length of time.

    Do the different liveries for southeastern trains (white and blue) always tell you what class of train it is.
    So basically are there some classes that have white and blue trains

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains Před 6 lety +1

      The white ones are as built and the blue ones have been refurbished. In principle they will all end up blue when the refurbishment is finished. That raises an interesting point about premium brand differentiation, something that BR was never good at. Southeastern have decided to have a single brand colour on all their trains rather than maintain premium branding on the Javelin High Speed service. South West Trains strategy was to clearly differentiate into three brands with white for long distance, blue for outer suburban and red for suburban. Southwestern Railway seem to be going for a single brand. Makes it easier to disguise when you have substituted a suburban unit on the Bournemouth service, that is until the passenger gets on board.

    Is the announcement for 'Inspector Sands' really about a train fire (as reported in the media)? I do understand the announcements were for a test.

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains Před 4 lety

      I believe that 'Inspector Sands' is just a general alert message. Any security staff or British Transport Police in the vicinity will know what to do.

    why are southern diesels banned from Victoria.

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains Před 6 lety +3

      The office development over the Brighton side of Victoria station leaves insufficient ventilation for dispersal of the diesel fumes. The Chatham side of the station is OK because the conventional trainshed is still there and the country end is open to the air. Diesels and steam are regular visitors to the low numbered platforms.

    Any one know why london has a lot of third rail tracks?

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains Před 3 lety

      The LSWR adopted the third rail from the USA. As the dominant part of the Southern Railway after 1922 this became the standard system on that railway. The LBSCR lines that had been electrified using overhead wires were converted to third rail in the 1920s. The system expanded from then to include the Southeastern and Chatham lines. Bournemouth was added in 1967 and later extended to Weymouth. Some extensions such as East Grinstead were made in the 80s. There are unlikely to be any further extensions due to the Electricity at Work Regulations.

      Hi Peter. Thank you for your comments. Captions are a work in progress. I thought I had cracked it with the blue and white outline version but I agree it didn't work so well with this film. The problem is normally the constantly changing background. Trains are generally a dark object with a relatively dark background so the white outline should maintain a contrast. Unfortunately my video editing programme doesn't support a white banner across the bottom like ANWP use on their videos.

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains Před 6 lety +2

      Don't know about the canopies. There will be some shops, cafes and restaurants in the arched area. The building work for them is not actually finished yet. Regarding plants, art and meeting points, it isn't that sort of station. It is principally a busy commuter hub with lots of people passing through quickly on their regular journeys so it doesn't need the facilities of a Grand Central or Hauptbahnhof style station

    What a disappointment the new station is. A windswept desert above ground and a frost hollow downstairs, and soon another shopping arcade which will no doubt lead to the same chaos you get at St. Pancras.

      I guess you were there on a cold and windy day. We have had plenty of those recently. I've been through it several times in the last six months and also filmed there a couple of times since last summer. I love the place. I think the big test of it's practicality will not be until May or even December when the Thameslink service ramps up. That will put a lot more people through the station that are not necessarily regular users.
