  • Fabricating a DIY, Equal-Length Turbo Manifold for my K11 Nissan Micra.
    Turbocharging this car is something which I've wanted to do for ages now, and making the turbo manifold was one of the first big steps towards that.
    The turbo is off a 2014 1.4l Ford Fiesta diesel. The idea behind the setup was to have a small-ish turbo that would spool quickly and add power in the low end. Although this would mean not as much potential for power in the high end, I don't want to be redlining the car constantly.
    I had spent weeks designing the manifold in CAD trying to get an equal-length design that would work. Most definitely too tricky of a design for my first manifold which I've made but anyway...
    Obviously an equal-length manifold isn't needed, but you can't tell me it isn't cool. To sum it up, you could say I want to have a pretty unique setup.
    Next up will be setting up the engine management with a Speeduino ECU, but that's for next episode...

    I enjoy videos like this. Some people may think it loosk shit, but doing a lot of things yourself helps you learn and gain experience improving as you go. Studying it also helps you develop the knowledge needed for future ideas

      Thanks mate, that's exactly the idea for this project. I don't mind it having imperfections as long as it works and I can look at it knowing I've done it myself and learnt something from it.👍

    I used this turbocharger in the 1.0l engine in the Peugeot 106. Personally, I think it is too small. It causes very high backpressure and therefore great problems with knocking combustion and high EGT. KP35 is a good turbo up to 0.8l. You can get a maximum of 100hp from it. In my second car, Fiat 126p 650cc, it works perfectly.
    I recommend looking for a turbo from 2.0hdi 90-110hp. There were GT15, K03 or RHF4. Especially the first two will provide a better spool. Currently testing GT15 in 205 1.1 and it works very well.
    btw. I see an error in the turbo installation. The oil flow through the turbo must be vertical, i.e. supply at the top, drain at the bottom. Knowing this KP35 and the asymmetric bolt spacing of the exhaust housing, this will be difficult to achieve.

      It sounds like you're really knowledgeable regarding turbos, thanks for all the advice. I'm aware the one I'm using is fairly small, but I'm not aiming for crazy power. With that being said, it doesn't mean I won't maybe change it out eventually. Regarding the oil feed, a few days after filming the video, I eventually spun the housing to have the feed at 12 and drain at 6 o'clock. Cheers for the comment👍

      @@the_mintiest_micra I like to create such low-budget turbo kits from junk and I have already made a few of them. The biggest problem of KP35, as I wrote earlier, is high backpressure. It will take a lot of time to tune the ignition to eliminate the risk of knocking. I remember that turbo in 1.0l engine had 0.5 bar at only 1800rpm.

    This is great! Always great to see Irish car content were there is some creation rather than just expensive car builds being showing off! Keep up the good work bai! out of interest where did you buy the tubing from? Been trying to work out where the best place to buy steel for turbo / exhaust is. Also where will you buy your intercooler tubing from?

      Thanks mate, appreciate it. The tubing for the exhaust was from TubeCo Ireland. It's just regular dairy stainless steel piping. As for the intercooler piping, I haven't got it yet, but most likely will go the same route and get stainless.

    You cannot put the oxygen sensor before the turbo, the exhaust gas temperature would melt it. It should be mounted after the turbo. You could use the bung you already welded for the oxygen sensor to fit an EGT probe, which is really useful in turbo setups. When tuning your ecu, you could have too high EGT even with a correct air/fuel ratio, because the EGT depends both on the fuel mixture and the advance. If there's not enough advance, the EGT could be too high

      That was one of my worries, I kind of did this so I could run the car temporarily without the rest of the exhaust, will probably weld another bung in the downpipe and block this one or do as you said. Cheers for the advice👍

    Your o2 sensor will die it will overheat.. in turbo engine you must fit it in downpipe :) lenght from head to o2 must be at least half a meter, that what i know :)

      The O2 sensor location was only temporary, I've made the full exhaust and installed it in the downpipe, further from the turbo.👍

    did you reinforce the drive shaft and drive joints or are these original?

      Still original driveshafts, haven't considered it as I've seen people getting away with pushing a lot of power and not breaking them🤷‍♂️
