    Great video. FYI PIREP's are done by the pilot telling ATC when in-air and ATC file accordingly. Pilots can alternatively do it when they land. They are then given to pilots flying similar paths as part of their pre-flight reports, or ATC advises pilots via radio.

    • @SupersonicKiwi
      @SupersonicKiwi  Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks! When you say they ‘tell’ ATC, is that verbally over the radio, or is there some sort of electronic gizmo that they use? The abbreviations and encoding make me think it’s data over some sort of limited bandwidth radio signal, but I’m totally guessing on that front.

    • @PyjamaLlama
      @PyjamaLlama Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@SupersonicKiwi Yep, given verbally over radio to ATC. They then file a PIREP form on your behalf and it is shared verbally to other current flights affected, or provided to pilots still on the ground for their pre-flights. In unmonitored areas, you just announce it over the shared frequency but I have never been in that situation myself.

    Life is always a exciting awesome adventure when I watch your flight reviews around New Zealand, I am from Christchurch and I flew on Air New Zealand 12 days ago., from Wellington to Christchurch on the ATR-72. A 50 minute flight not much to see out the window with cloud cover but a good flight though!. Just water and a piece of fudge on offer!.

      Thank you! I have a review of an ATR-72 Wellington to Christchurch flight, hopefully your experience was similar. I know they don’t offer hot beverages on the A320 on that route due to time constraints, but I’m surprised they didn’t on the ATR. I hope the fudge was excellent.

      Oh, yay! The maps take ages, so it’s awesome that they’re appreciated! And thanks for the thumbs up on the de-icing info - I research endlessly and still worry that I’ve got something wrong! Most of this was from NASA and out of the Q300 manual, so I was reasonably confident, but you never can tell.

    Murphy is back! I hope he didn't get too cold from the ice. I have seen those ground operated De-icing machines but wasn't aware of them being on the plane itself. Not sure why they would have ground ones if the plane can just do it itself? Great video!

    • @SupersonicKiwi
      @SupersonicKiwi  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thankfully Murphy has his own fur coat, and he seemed completely calm about his experience. We’re fortunate that he travels so well. I think the inbuilt anti-icing and de-icing features are focused on the leading edge of the control surfaces, as that’s where ice builds up during flight. The ground based de-icing systems are there to remove the ice from the entire aircraft before it heads to the runway so it will behave in a predictable manner during take off.

    • @SupersonicKiwi
      @SupersonicKiwi  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Hi! I’ve tried so many different cameras over the years, my current go-to configuration is a DJI Osmo Pocket suction mounted to the window and a GoPro on one of their mini-sticks. I also use my phone (iPhone 11) for low light (the meals on the Emirates one were shot on my phone) and I have a Canon M6 with a zoom (I think it’s a 250mm?) that I use for some of the stuff that’s a long way away (planes spotting and some approach footage). And then, of course, sometimes something goes wrong, so I end up changing it up a bit. I end up with a LOT of footage, haha, but that’s half the fun.
