Kerr and the team benefit from having a thug player, similar to old hockey teams having a player who wasn't good at the sport, their job was just to go out and injure the other team's star players. It's a useful strategy, but the NHL cracked down on it for obvious reasons. Since the NBA is clearly allowing it, I'm surprised other teams haven't adapted and brought in their own thug types to go out and elbow, eye-poke, nut-kick, etc. the other team's players.
