- Wrestling Bios Presents - Shane Douglas and The Birth of ECW
ECW proved to be one of the most groundbreaking and trendsetting wrestling promotions of the 90s. While the WWE and WCW were producing wholesome family entertainment, the Philidelphia based ECW would begin a revolution in wrestling that changed the course of the wrestling business as a whole.
ECW started life as the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance. Tod Gordon bought the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance and renamed his new acquisition to Eastern Championship Wrestling. Eastern Championship Wrestling soon found a new head booker in Paul Heyman, and the promotion also became affiliated with the National Wrestling Alliance.
When the NWA approached ECW in regards to holding a tournament to crown a new NWA World Heavyweight Champion on ECW Television, it should have been a time to celebrate. Instead, NWA president Dennis Coralluzzo rubbed everyone the wrong way within Eastern Championship Wrestling, from owner Tod Gordon, Head booker Paul Heyman, all the way to Shane Douglas, the man who the NWA booking committee decided would be the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion. In the end, Eastern Championship Wrestling decided to go against tradition and usher in a new era in wrestling. When Shane Douglas throws down the NWA title after winning the tournament, a moment in wrestling history is created.
This video looks at Shane Douglas and the birth of ECW. Topics covered include:
01:33 - How Eastern Championship Wrestling began
03:03 - ECW becomes affiliated with the NWA
04:38 - Shane Douglas in the WWF and WCW
06:50 - Issues arise between the NWA and ECW
11:45 - Shane Douglas throws down the NWA title
13:37 - Extreme Championship Wrestling is born
- Much More!

Shane Douglas lit the fuse for the attitude era without even knowing it
Agree
...and then he was pushing Target shopping carts into the store!
good point.
110%
The Franchise was incredible. Idk and I’m not saying all the stuff the Kliq said wasn’t true, they could very well be right that he underachieved in WWF. But he was the man in ECW, and doesn’t get his flowers as much as he should for being who he was on that era of wrestling.
“ I am not the guy to accept a torch handed down to me from an organization that died 7 years ago.” What a great line!
Shane's one of the most underappreciated figures in wrestling HISTORY!
Dan Crews a load of guys from ecw are underrated and under appreciated.
I would agree with that, although I didn't get a chance to watch much. Here it was only aired Saturday nights at 3am, and I couldn't afford the PPVs
He was definitely appreciated when he mopped the Target isles...
Shane is a nobody
Shane Douglas's Speech was the declaration of the Birth of Extreme and the Birth of The Franchise
That's a misuse of the term franchise
@@user-hc9qv9yb9m no not really since that was his nickname the franchise
@@user-hc9qv9yb9m as in their franchise player or the founder of the franchise known as ECW

The most consistent & underrated wrestling channel on CZcams 🏆🥇 Thanks for your time & these accurate videos
I agree this channel rocks
@@khanthevideogamehunter2946 it should have wayyyy more subs
Absofuckinlutely, this guy always has amazing content. I've literally watched his entire catalog over the last couple months.
Please do a bio of the franchise Shane Douglas in ECW. His time in ECW was nothing short of amazing.
I couldn't agree more.
Yes. Double yes!
Triple yes!
The best in ECW history
There was nothing better than 90s wrestling. The moment with the NWA title was a huge talk back in the day.
Shane Douglas is an underrated worker.
Still wanting a "Jim Cornette" bio.
I need that💯
Me too kid, me too....
YIKES!!!! The Louisville slugger...... I don't know if I would wanna go to his realm.
Take a terrestrial globe, set it on fire. I think that would sum up a bio.
🌽
Im a HUGE Shane Douglas mark. Loved his work in ECW. He was HHH before HHH. Great video as always man👍👍
HHH isnt even his own wrestler he stole the frachise entire gimick h ows everything to Shane Douglas everything!!!!
Nope. HHH wish he has 1% of what Shane Douglas have.

As a Lifelong Philadelphian who always watched ECW on channel 48 Saturday afternoon and nights, Thanks for another Fantastic Video!
Glad that U get to watch this
Me too
Shane really blew me away when he threw the NWA belt away that was a great shoot.
Nothing but nostalgia and happiness from a simpler time. Much respect.
Funny thing about NWA traditionalists being so pissed off with THAT promo: it was the only significant moment they or their championship had in 25 years.
I love you for this. So many classic ECW moments and this is just one of them. If you ever want to see me cry, all you have to do is show me when the Public Enemy spray painted out the word "Eastern" and sprayed in the word "extreme" in the banner that's usually behind Joey Styles.
Shane deserved so much more. His shoots are fantastic
He is one of the best talkers in the wrestling business.
Douglas's promo that night is definitely top 5 greatest promos of all time. He was such a heat magnet back then.
Nobody liked Shane Douglas except for the ECW marks.
Completely disagree, and what was he smoking to say something like that about Ric Flair?!
Large23 that promo both started and ended Shane’s career..
Agreed. Shane changed wrestling with that promo. And about Flair, he was a deteriorated, flabby middle aged man way beyond his prime. Shane Douglas did right challenging flair. Listen to Rick Rude, Shane Douglas, Scott Steiner, and other wrestlers that commented on Flair. They all thought Flair overstayed his welcome with concise thoughts. Flair didn't want to bow out gracefully and do the right thing.
Brother, your work rate is amazing.
100k subs soon for sure 💪
Thank you!
I hope you hit a million subs this channel should be promoted by wrestletalk and walt culture
Shane Douglas's first Royal Rumble appearance was pretty impressive
Shane is my favorite wrestler he was great on the mic
We gonna need a The Franchise & Triple Threat bio
Dusty Rhodes hard times and Shane Douglas' era of the extreme promos are my top favorites
Growing up in the 90s and being from Philly, ECW was the best Wrestling promotion out that time, in my opinion. When I was a kid, I couldn't wait for the weekend to come round, so I can watch ECW on channel 48. Good times.
Cox Cable access channel 10 in New Orleans.
Glad you finally did a Shane Douglas bio, would like to see you go more into depth with his Franchise character in ECW as well as the Triple Threat in later vids if you can . Also it would be interesting to see a JBL bio where you talk about his transition from Bradshaw to JBL and his run as WWE Champion
We need a full career vid on Shane Douglas
Yes!! Thank you so much for making this! Love ECW and this is a legendary moment!
This really took a lot out of NWA. ECW had to be nearly dead before we got a proper NWA.
WCW pulling out of the NWA the previous year was heavy hitting enough as it was, but this event definitely put the NWA in a worse spot. I am glad it did happen because, love it or hate it, ECW made a huge impact on pro wrestling.
Agree with a lot of commenters. Your channel has substance. A lot of the big wrestling channels are filled mostly with rumors and gossip and just parroting what they read online. It gets tiring. You and wrestling with wregret are both solid dudes with solid channels
I still get chills watching Shane's promo
I'd love to see more early ECW videos, pre 1997
Another Extremely good video from Wrestling Bios .
2:47 Eddie Gilbert was fired because he kept booking older Wrestlers that where big in N.W.A. back in the 1980's over younger hungry talent & was slowly turning Eastern Championship Wrestling into N.W.A. East
Another awesome video by wrestling Bios and it’s on one of my favourite wrestling promotions ECW I loved the Shane Douglas character he was pissed of at WCW and Ric Flair
What a work horse. Great content as always dude!
Here in Boston in the early 90s I would only be able to catch Ecw at 1am on Friday’s on the local Spanish tv channel. I remember telling all my friends about how awesome it was and it felt like this secret that only I knew about. Half the broadcast was them trying to sell the hone videos and the other half were matches. It was like a giant infomercial. Was so cool. I watched every Friday from that point on. Those were the days.
I lived in Worcester during the late 90's and I also remember ECW being broadcast on the Spanish channel late Saturday nights. I'd watch it every chance I got.
I liked it before I even watched.. I have love your bios since NWO bios came in my feed... I have been hooked ever since .. "whatcha gonna do when wrestling bios goes wild on you!!!" .. lol keep them coming..thank you for your hard work sir 👍
Said Ric Flair couldn't lace his boots, they had some great drugs in ECW!
Shane Douglas had heat with Ric Flair for mitigating his push in WCW as the Dynamic Dudes. He still doesn't get along with Flair.
I already know this is going to be amazing. You should do Haku next :)
I would watch 10 hours on THE MONSTER MENG
@@psuley1977 Year ago I interviewed him via MySpace (that's how long ago) and he was seriously the nicest guy I interviewed. Most people gave me a sentence or two for an answer, he was giving me paragraphs.
@@JamesMMcCann That's so great to read. Thanks for sharing brother
Unique choice and have to say, as usual, thoroughly enjoyed.
ECW was remarkable in what it did in such a small space of time and this was the catalyst for its legacy.
Shane Douglas deserved a lot more success than what he got in my opinion but at least he has a definitive mark in history
Great video big fan of ECW.
Awesome video. You always deliver quality videos and this is one of your best.
Paul pulled a death row records move
Love these Videos bro Keep em Coming! My favorite was ALL UR VIDEOS U HAVE MADE!
Crockett didn't want to monopolize the NWA under a single outlet. The NWA had a vast talent pool with smaller promotions which could draw good talent to larger promotions which would give credibility to the NWA and the showcase promotion outlet.
I think the NWA just wasn't prepared for a major promotion to be that showcase that would have been what WCW used to be.
Smaller promotions would benefit as would house shows. It would have been a great business deal, but the problem of the President of the NWA just being to terse hurt the NWA greatly. ECW benefited. NWA lost a major outlet, and a ton of credibility.
They've only recently regained some of it, but really, they should have been more open as a promotion to allow outlet promotions their own leeway.
Tradition could have been kept while still allowing change in other ways.
To be honest, it always felt like Shane wanted the recognition as the true World Champion across numerous promotions, but the way he ended up being treated, soured the deal. The way he sounded when he named off the wrestlers of previous holders of the belt showed he wanted in on that long line, and that statement he made to his father showed it... but the throwing it down and telling the past champions to kiss his ass, that was all for the NWA President and the feelings he had towards being wanted and unwanted at the same time. I don't blame him. The NWA Board of Directors saw good in Shane, but not the NWA President.
I think it was more that both sides distrusted each other and that Coralluzzo thought Gordon wanted to monopolise the belt and vice versa.
@@mrman8541 very true. Gordon wanted to build a company, but Coralluzzo only just wanted a champion to promote for their brand. A brand that literally was crumbling. It was time to let go. And they did so in the best way. They literally shoved the truth in the face of the NWA. The NWA didn't want to see the truth. The truth was ugly. They ignored it as long as they could, but Shane was right in every way, and he delivered the truth, in a nice big can of whoopass that couldn't be ignored.
Can we get a Taz bio now pls
Soup bones, Cole! 😂
Great video as always, thank you
Have you thought of reviewing some of your favorite PPVS? Also could we get a Terry Funk video (either his feud with flair or a solo)
I was at an ECW show at Downingtown, PA Farmers Market in ‘95. I watched the Franchise punch a fan right in the kisser when it spilled into the crowd. It was insane. E-C-Dub!
ECW took the ball and ran with it, NWA won in the end tho as its actually still around.
SINISTER OBLITERATION it’s only returning to prominence because of Billy Corgan’s love of old school wrestling and his understanding of streaming content.
SINISTER OBLITERATION which is absolutely for the best. I love new NWA, it’s better than WWE’s stale act.
Only in name not as a true alliance
Adge Rantz yeah, absolutely. But Ecw made a huge impact. They basically kick started the attitude era.

ADAM OF GREYSKULL the rise and fall of ecw dvd is a great start.
@@gooniemarky considerate done ill buy it now thanks 🤘🤪🤘
Skelly with that said, it of course has a wwe spin on things, typical WWE revisionist history. But it is still a very good documentary.
Another great choice consistantly the best youtube channell
Shane Douglas was a good wrestler and excellent on the mic!
As always an excellent video. well done!
Thanks for this video!!!! I always wondered when it changed from “Eastern” to “Extreme”.
Please do more Original ECW content...you're one of the only people who give fair and honest opinions on all your videos so it would be refreshing to watch more ecw stuff on your channel and an RVD/Sabu tag team Championship reign video or even cooler would be a Mickey whipwreck video he is the creator of the stone cold stunner and a underdog and his story would be awesome

Another great episode. Love the great editing.
Another great bio thank you 👍😎👍
I turn on a playlist from this channel to go to sleep most nights which might or might not be strange hah
Thank you so very much, finally the Franchise gets his creds 💯
Just finished makin a Shane Douglas CAW on Mania 2000 on my N64 after watching this. Won a triple threat against Terry Funk and RVD in his first match.
Ecw had the best theme
Had not been for Dennis monopolizing Eastern Championship Wrestling and being against Shane Douglas as NWA champion than Gordon and Heyman never would have done what they did. Let us all thank Dennis.
I don't even like ecw but enjoy your epic videos that I not only watch, but like beforehand.
I love Shane Douglas the Franchise of ECW
#wrestlingbio' another great bio thank you 👍😎👍
Yes! Yes! Yes! About to start making dinner and the prefect video to listen too. Huge fan of this channel!
Didn't know Chris Candido won the NWA title after Eastern Championship Wrestling became Extreme Championship Wrestling. Would have been cool if Bam Bam won the WWE title (or WCW title, I forget which one he was in back in 1994) this way the Triple Threat would have three different major titles.
Please do a full rise and fall of ECW including the doomed ECW One Night Stand
Shane and Candido were the most underrated wrestlers of their era.
On that HOT AUGUST NIGHT was that a Neil Diamond ref 🤘🤪🤘
I was a fan since EASTERN championship wrestling. The name before ECW. I saw them summer 96. Raven and Stevie Richards Dudley's meanie that tag team the pit bulls. Tommy dreamer. (who looks like Julian from trailer park boys)
pika23 nobody cares about how old you are
Lol, he does look like Julian!! I never thought of that.
The franchise is so underrated
Thank you for this!
Thank you for an interesting video. Would be interested to hear about Shane Douglas's early career.
Living only a few minutes away from Philly at the time this was a big deal locally.
That was a great bio!!!
I didn't know that ECW was named - Eastern Champion Wrestling
and that Shane Douglas was a Key Player in helping give Birth to the ECW we knew about. lol
Sad ecw died so early it was a fantastic promotion
@@noahgrey3815 this is very tru I remember Mike awesome jumping ship to wcw
Fluffy Boi ask New Jack about that. He could have payed guys if he didn’t decide to gamble it all away in Atlantic City.
Fluffy Boi everyone in that locker room loved that locker room. Paul failed the boys. Tod should have stayed in charge of finances.
i miss these kinda of videos bios would post. i still like the videos though
Yet another fantastic vid keep the ecw coming
Definitely should do more ecw videos
Another great video.👍
Another great video! Maybe one on John Zandig/CZW, in the near future? :)
Excellent video
Mate without ECW there would have been no attitude era. How interesting all these little sparks light a larger fire down the road.
This was cool, I always wanted to watch that tournament match.
Great promo by Shane Douglas
Good work!
Quicky becoming a top page bud
@8:28
How AMAZING and NOTEWORTHY it would be, for WWE to adopt this mentality:
Have a board of directors make decisions on the title winners & holders, rather than Vince hold all of the power [in booking decisions].
The rise and fall of ECW is great. Forever Hardcore is great. ECW ECW ECW
I like how those two documentaries are almost connected too. And then a decade after they both came out everything about ECW was totally finalized when the Heyman documentary came out.
They used to be on 1am Sunday mornings msg network
I remember that. I'm in Ny so Wwf/E was running things and was hard to catch any other organizations
I think I was in 5th or 6th grade and a friend told me that there's this gritty, raw fkng wrestling that comes on a public access channel at like midnight or 1am or something. I was like "who tF wants to watch that?". After being burned out from an all day MKII session on my SNES, I was like fk it, and checked it out. I was hooked.
great vid 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
……that NWA belt has a picture of itself in the middle of it.
