Don't Come To Leicester

  • čas přidán 21. 06. 2015
  • Half hour documentary made in 1992 to mark the 20th anniversary of the sudden expulsion of approximately 80 000 South Asians from Uganda, a decision made by President Idi Amin. Many of the refugees settled in Leicester, with their family and friends, even though the City Council attempted to divert them by advertising in the Ugandan press with an infamous slogan: "Don't Come To Leicester". Twenty years later, they were and remain an essential part of the fabric of Leicester's society.
The film examines some of the historical, political, economic, cultural and personal factors in this tumultuous event, with archive footage and contemporary filming and interviews. Screened on BBC regional television.

Only in 6 years, there is nationalist PM who has taken country leaps and bounds ahead... so much so just google and you will see India in top 10 (the richest countries) and in many cases top 5 (Top GDP countries)...

I know it's not fashionable, but I also think it would be interesting to see the impact on the established population of a place like Leicester of a massive influx over a short period of time. Both good and bad. How has the English culture survived, absorbed, changed. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be provocative. Culture is always shifting and changing and that's a good thing.

It's ironic how Ugandan Asians got treated as second class citizens in England when they treated black Ugandans like slaves in their own country. Neither of it is fair, but just interesting how life humbles you. Africans should and must take control of their land, natural resources and all sectors which will bring about prosperity for them.

You have to blame the British! they created problems everywhere. In Malaysia, they did the same and Uganda and Kenya was no different. African people were totally marginalized in their own societies. In Malaysia and SE -Asia the Chinese took the economy into their own hands and later pushed out the Malays from the mainstream. These things do have consequences. However, having said that, we must acknowledge that migrants do work hard and at times outperform the locals due to sheer pressure.

Malaysia has always been MALAY-centric. The PM has always been a Malay man, the Sultans and Agongs were all Malay men. For over 60 years, UMNO, a Malay-based party ruled the country and implemented the New Economic Policy in 1970 to increase the wealth and economic power of the Bumiputra. It is also written in the constitution that Malays will get special privileges.
If despite all of this, Malays still couldn't catch up to the Chinese, then it's the fault of your leaders and your people. Don't blame the British or the 'pendatang'.

Most whites have fled to nearby villages and towns , whilst Leicester has been colonised by Asians predominantly . The empire has striked back, this is a similar situation across most of England. Call me name's if you want but whatever your race or colour you know it's the truth .

This is why there is so much racism and segregation in the UK because of the divisions and people want to live amongst thier own kind.

but even though I like indian food alot of Asians in my experience are very racist, I have experienced racism by these people my husband I think is a bit racist never very caring or loving you never feel excepted they only care about their own kind. They like to segregate themselves alot. some of his relatives were racist as well not his mother or sister they were nice. Indian never respect other cultures or other people only there own kind. They can be very rude and ignorent. I have never seen this racist bad rude behaviour in any other race excepted india/Pakistan. They are extremely racist
