Peeing on a plane when you're paralyzed

- An airplane is definitely not wheelchair accessible. There are no "accessible washrooms" on board and even the biggest, fanciest planes do not keep access for mobility impaired customers in mind. This is just the way it is.
Access on a plane is provided by awful aisle chairs and airport staff. This is the price that must be paid for travel.
Travel in general can be stressful when you have a disability and when easy access to a bathroom on a plane is not guaranteed, it can make things even worse.
In this video I talk about three things I do to make peeing on an airplane easier. They won't take away the stress entirely, but I hope these tips will, at least, make your next trip feel easier!

A big thank you for being bold and caring enough to share the process of peeing on a plane. You make able body folks aware of the challenges you face everyday so we can be a more informed group of folks who care about you as a para.
I haven't even thought of this, OMG. I love this. Great tips, as usual!
Brittany you are wonderful. Thank-you for posting your videos.
Thanks for watching! Glad you appreciate my videos!
Great info thanks
Our thoughts are so in sync...either check your emails because you saw my email to you...or you and I are thinking along the same idea 🤣. It also helps a lot if you go before you get on the plane.
Damm Britt, you're clearly a better man than I am, I don't know if I would have the courage to share the way you do, you clearly have a big heart the Great Soul so glad you're running this site...
Thank you empowered para i leaned how to cath anywhere using your videos. I love to travel your tips are good notes for a plane.
Seriously!? That's so cool! Great job for putting in the work! 👏 👏 👏
Thanks for sharing. I work for the airlines and this is good information.
You're welcome! I hope it helps you serve customers with disabilities!
So glad you posted this! Being a man 90% of our clothing has the zipper LOL. But I too cath on a plane. I use the VaPro Plus Pocket by Hollister. It too is an all in one system. I always bring some type of jacket and drape that over me and simple do the deed. Disposal is always an odd issue. Telling the stewardess what is in the bag caused a huge issue one time and since then it goes into an opaque plastic bag and dumped as trash when they come. So I advise doing that otherwise they wish to treat as hazmat! Keep up your channel it is great!
lol yeah never tell them what it is haha. Men have it easier when cathing in terms of location but harder to insert lol. Short urethra is nice lol
It amazes me the airlines are allowed to keep the bathrooms so small and no handicap seating near the door. First row of first class should be easily accessible for someone in a wheelchair. How come ADA accessibility rules don’t apply?
Good Information. Thank you! Dankeschön! Best greetings from Germany.
Thanks! Greetings!
Wel said sis.. thank you so much
you're welcome!
Great comments and I’ve tried all sorts of things myself. I’m a male double amputee. I say dehydrate before the flight, use the airport restroom before you get on the plane. On shorter flight it is easier. I always get a window seat regardless. Gives me plenty of options. If you plan on peeing at your seat , there are disposable urine bags, which I have a material that becomes gel. Ziploc bags are interesting, but don’t become solid. Perhaps use the airline vomit bag or bring extra bag with you to place your urine bag.
Always bring a sanitizer.

Thank you, important note
Thank you for sharing what it's like for you. I'm sure it's helpful for so many. I "diaper up" but that's not going to suit everyone in every circumstance. x
I appreciate that you don't just pay lip service to peeing on a plane.
Now, I’m going have to figure out what a Foley is. I only learned about catheters in general about a year ago. Previously I had no idea that a paraplegic lost normal control of the bladder and bowels - what an eye-opener!
Foley is an indwelling catheter that always stays in through the urethra
@@EmpoweredPara Thank you. Am I correct in saying that then the person has a bag attached to their leg which is then emptied on a needed basis? As I think about this, I can imagine advantages and disadvantages of a Foley.
TSA plot twist exiting the plane: "Madam, you are not allowed to carry on board a container filled with more than 100 milliliters of liquid!!!"
lol right haha!
I do like these catheters from Coloplast but I have an augmented bladder (surgically made bigger to help incontinence) so these bags aren't big enough. Other brands that have bigger bags just tend to be less compact overall as far as I've found
Thank you But sadly I will never fly again. I am on 4 liters of oxygen. they will not allow me to fly with air tanks,
Even lowering yourself in the seat, you still need to open your legs to get the catheter in as there's nothing to hold your legs, a coat wouldn't hide that and even using a cover, how can you see your catheter isn't touching it and infected before you insert it ? There are usually 3 seats/aisle - how could you do all this and still check the amount of urine that came out without a flashlight ?? I simply wouldn't know where and how to put my legs ..
Yes it's totally awkward. I just leave the catheter in for longer than I normally would to make sure I'm done. Its not idea for sure but it works for me most of the time.
One of the few perks of having a Urostomy, being able to pee into a coke / water bottle while seated be that on a plane or a car in a traffic jam……👍🏻
I have a friend with a urostomy and she loves it:)
@@EmpoweredPara - Wouldn’t say I love it, but my friends who Cath. I think it’s easier and quicker…..but I’ve had it for 48yrs so kind of used to it now……😂
While traveling, I wear bigger absorbent products than usual that I can wear for a longer time.
yeah me too:)
It must be difficult for you to pee on a airplane, for you to talk about this is normalising this and making it easier for people who have a new injury and don't really know what to do, this is very honourable of you,
Re: Aisle Chair - do all chair users have to utilize the Airline Aisle Chair regardless of the width of their own wheelchair? I’m just guessing from the videos, but your chair looks pretty narrow.
I didn't need an aisle chair last time I flew but I was in the first row. Pretty sure no wheelchair can fit in the actual aisle.
@@EmpoweredPara That is a great seat location to get! Ahhh, well it’s been 41 years since I’ve flown in a commercial plane.
Like that bag is part of catheter
Wanna be my friend?? Iam Paraplegic patient
Did you check with the airline stewardess for a private space?
No haven't ever asked for that
@@EmpoweredPara sorry to ask that question, I've seen the full video after I sent you that question.b
How do you poop on a plane?
I don't lol
You don’t at least not voluntarily. And yes I have had an involuntary on a plane.
Use a diapers
PS...you might want to check your video quality of your camera 😉.
I used my phone for this one so it sucks lol.
What is cath?
Using a catheter to pee
@@EmpoweredPara Ouch
Airlines generally don’t like it when people pee on their airplanes
I guess they better take the bathroom out then lol
Passenger on the plane whispers to flight attendant. “There’s woman in the seat directly across from mine who is fiddling with something under her coat.” “I’m sure she is setting the timer on a bomb.” 😬. LOL. 😅
Lol yeah and then I have to hide the pee that people assume is bomb !
@@EmpoweredPara 💥 😅
you can try adult diapers, less stress than?
yes I should where a diaper when I travel!
@@EmpoweredPara that's ok :) no worries
@@EmpoweredPara are you able to pee without a catheter even if your bladder is full?
@@DocHouseMeister no
@@EmpoweredPara so it would be absolute pointless if you would wear diapers? :D
👏💜👍🙏🤗♿️
Have you ever considered a mitrofanoff?
Yes! I almost got one when I was a teenager. Decided last minute not to go through with it.
