Barre chords are difficult for almost everyone at first and for good reason. They require a completely different technique, approach, and different muscles than open chords.
Most people jump right into bar chords without any preparation. I know I did, and then got frustrated because they didn't sound good, my hand hurt and I began to wonder if something was wrong with me.
Today we’re gonna fix that. I’m gonna show you a series of three Barre Chord Finger Strength Exercises that will help you build the strength and the proper technique to play clean-sounding bar chords.

Hi Tomas, your barre exercises are great when I'm only playing the barre, but don't explain how to play the barre and additional notes, such as those on the third and fifth strings for the infamous F7 chord. Have you any advice how to play the barre on the first fret and the additional notes on the second and third frets without losing the finger pressure on the barre?
I’m not seeing a response to this question. I’m curious about this too. I understand the concept of building strength, but when beginning to stretch the hand to hit other notes on different frets along with barring, is there an efficient transition method to building the strength to maneuvering that?
I've gone through many barre chord tutorials. Even just had a lesson where my guitar teacher discussed them. And NO ONE explicitly pointed out the muscle you need to flex to make them happen. As soon as you pointed that out, my learning went through the roof just in the last hour. I now know what I need to develop and it's happening. So thank you for being a great instructor that builds fundamentals.
Thomas. Thank u. I am attempting to pick the guitar back up after three years of not playing due to a bad car accident. I have stenosis in my spine and my hands go numb. I’ve lost a lot of strength and coordination and I’m getting so frustrated literally to the point of tears, not just from the guitar, but it also caused a hiatal hernia which is interfering with my diaphragm so i get winded when i sing. I have been feeling very discouraged. This was the pep talk i needed, besides just being really helpful. I will break it down and take it slow doing your exercises a few times a day and work my way back up. Your voice and attitude are so cheerful and encouraging. Thank you. It really was exactly what i needed.
I'm glad I could help Jennifer. We all need a pep talk once in a while.
@@TomasMichaud Thank you so much, Tomas. I will stick with it. :D
🙏🙏🙏
This is like the maginifier of your barre chord fundamentals. In my case, I was like "well? what could this easy execise do to me?" and then it almost felt brutally honest when every exercise revealed parts that I did terribly bad which I had never noticed. Thanks, Tomas :)
Thanks. I've been avoiding improving my barre chords for fifty years. Thanks for helping me face the music and finally improve!
Happy to help!
over 20 years of ignoring A shaped bar chords and I now have a pinky and 3rd finger technique, Thanks!
You're welcome Adam.
Thanks so much Tomas. VERY helpful!!
This is amazing! Thank you for creating this video!
A tiny tip I just noticed for boney fingers. When your index finger cant quite squeeze a string or two for the full bar, you can kinda push or pull or finger back and forth. Itll feel like your trying to roll/ a pencil or straw up and down your fingers (like 🤌 -🫰) really fast but with the guitar neck/strings. Hope this helps 🤷♂️
The energy and editing of your teaching makes for learning all the better. Thank you, I can’t wait to be barring chords like a olympic weight lifter
Go for it :)
Awesome!!! This is the biggest help!!! ❤Thanks
I started trying to do this with the full f major chord then realised i didn't have the strength i thought i did when moving to F minor. The G string wouldn't ring out.
Doing these exercises with just the barre is essential. You're great!
Wow cool man, thanks I'll be working on it
This is one of the best youtube channel that i have been recommended
Great video, great exercises
Thanks Thomas will Do.
Just what I was looking for ❤️

You're very welcome, Esther. I'm glad I could help.
Thank you Thomas, this exercise was well explained.

Persistent is the key. And smoothly too. One step at a time. Thanks Tomas 🎶🎶🎶

I'm new at guitar and and bar chords are hell I just hope I can keep on practicing them
I so believe in this practice method, even though its my first day. Thanks a lot!
You got this!
Thanks !!
You're very welcome David.
At 70+ learning guitar is frustrating at best. Barre chords are from another universe. However, Tomas you were full of good advise and your delivery energy even better. Loved it. I will work on it. Any advise on how to build strength in my left pinky. It’s soft, wont curl and bends/flops so its really hard to hold down a note.
Hey, I have the same problem with the lame pinky and this video really helped: czcams.com/video/yHE6vvImrss/video.html
Thanks... ❤
You're welcome Pravat.
Thanks! Just doing the exercising along with you, and my finger is already toast.
You got this!
Good job
Thanks Thomas!
Sir Good lesson to frostrators 🙏
So nice of you
Any thoughts on barring an A chord-shape using just the index (barre) and the ring finger (on the 2nd,3rd, and 4th strings)?
I have an arch in my finger I need to stiffen up fast
Quick question. What should I do if, say on exercise 2, I can't get notes on the G and B strings to ring clear when plucking one by one? Do I adjust my finger to get the note correct (and lose the barre across all strings) or do I just keep practicing until eventually I get it? I have short fat fingers and I just can't get individual notes to sound clear when barring all of them. Any help would be much appreciated.
This makes me feel better about not being able too Barre all 6 strings 😂
When I bar across all strings I can't get the B and G down to get good sound
Are you using your middle finger to assist your index finger in these exercises?
5th string barre chords I found easier than 6 th string barre chords.
