- After five years away, Formula 1 returned to China, but it was Max Verstappen who streaked to a fourth victory of 2024 at the Chinese Grand Prix in a race featuring two safety cars. Lando Norris beat Sergio Perez to second, ending the streak of one-twos from Ferrari and Red Bull and hometown hero Zhou Guanyu battled his way to 14th.
Bryn Lucas is joined by Jake Boxall-Legge and Jon Noble as we review the Chinese Grand Prix.

Max is so not boring--the problem is that we can't really see why he's so brilliant, and worse, pundits and journalists fail to explain what he is exactly doing. How is it that he is more than one second per lap faster without destroying his tires? What exactly does he do? If you watch footballer players like Messi you can actually see what they are doing when they demonstrate their brilliance, but in F1 it's very difficult for watchers of the race to figure out what's going on. And, strangely, journalists lack the same insights. There just isn't enough expertise.
The problem is that we have to much twitter or social media journalist. Everything is a hype it`s all about feelings and emotions. They give us no insight in the sport. Second problem is there are good journalist but they will only report what there readers like. There are good British media and journalist but they don`t like Max because of the goat conversation. Lewis is there hero and when you explain why Max is so good they think that will hurt some people`s feelings. I think both of them are exceptional but i have to say the last years Max is the best pilot on the grid.
Agree. But it's not a lack of expertise, it's a lack of decency and not being able to report unbiased. It's all about Hamilton for the british dominated f1 press. Even a Lando Norris gets treated differently than Lewis. These so called motorsport-loving-reporters are hurting the sport just because they cannot get over the fact that Hamilton isn't winning anymore.
Stroll still having fans is beyond belief
Max Verstappen and his Race Engineer worked out a number of changes after the sprint race to his car and those made his car a lot better.
Checo Perez also had a lot of changes to his car, but he complained after the race that those changes had made is car worse.
The same was true for Lewis Hamilton.
Ricciardo’s race pace was genuinely sensational, running 7-8 tenths faster in those laps before the SC
Maybe the chassis did the trick?
The penalties this weekend were a bit of a joke. Alonso getting more penalty points for racing hard than Stroll gets for not paying attention and plowing into the back of another car?
Stroll was very Stroll again😂
How can Australia have been a better race if the racing was much worse just because the name at the top was different...
Yeah. I think people who only pay attention to P1 don’t actually enjoy the sport. There’s so many stories to be told across the grid if you just pay attention.
They're British, that's your answer
I feel you glossed over the drive of Lando who was superb in the way he drove that Mclaren. At every red flag restart Lando opened up a gap very quickly against the rest of the field except for Max obviously and there has been talk about the subtle ways he lengthens the life of tyres with his driving technque.Just see where Oscar was before his car damage 9 secs adrift after 18 laps and Oscar is a great driver.
‘ I will make Daddy proud by fighting for LAST place in his green 200 million dollar F1 car ‘
What F1 really needs is just one car per outfit. That way it won't be possible to have "weak" drivers in your car, primarily there to ensure against failures of man or machine. We could have twice as many teams on the same grid. It would be like the old days. One car, one driver. One shot. Why not?
That's the headline for every race at the moment.
As a McLaren fan this was a very enjoyable race for me. I thought this was probably the best I’ve seen so far from Lando, outstanding drive. A shame Max is so dominant but at the same time you have to marvel at a sportsman at the top of his game.
I get that you lot aren't particularly RedBull fans which is okay, but as journalists you have the responsibility to try mask your inherent biases which again are natural to all. But the way y'all talk so graciously about other drivers or teams but when it comes to RedBull, the tone is either dismissive or negative.... For example the way you give a pass to Lewis but when it comes to Checo y'all get swords out. anyway it is just an observation noticed over time in y'all's presentation
British people have a sense of superiority over others and are extremely rude so it’s not surprising considering most journalists in the sport are British.
The only reason why Checo was not able to catch & pass Lando was because of excessive tire wear he wasted, catching & passing Charles. Had Max been in Checo's position, after his pit stop, he would have pushed, almost flat out, to pass Charles asap, then 'real in' Lando & pass asap. After that, prudent tire management would have got him home in P2.
I do wonder with this constant Perez bashing if it is under selling just how good Max is. Max is crushing the whole field and getting more out of this formula than anyone. Perez is second in the championship, he is doing the job. The rest of the field are more of a let down than Perez, right now. He isn't as good as Max, but him combined with the car is still the second best package thus far. Red Bull aren't obliged to make the show/racing/sport fun. They are winners, not purists.
Let me summarize: Verstappen is one of the five greatest F1 divers... Perez isnt getting it done because he's .5 sec a lap behind. Isnt it a little unfair to keep comparing Perez this way? He's in 2nd place so far, what more does he have to do? No one else is challenging Ver.
I agree with you but he was stuck behind ferrari and alonse so 3rd was good. CZcamsrs and journalist got a obsession to bad mouth Perez
@@cobusschoonderwoerd5805 It's not like last year where he was crashing in P1. Maybe Alonso, Leclerc, or Sainz could do better. Would they beat VER, I don't think so.
Max and Checo fan here. Checo is doing pretty well this season (not considering Australia, where he had a stalled floor because of a tear off), but his performance yesterday was subpar to say the least. Sure, he was unlucky with the VSC/SC timing, but with that car, he should've been able to bag both Leclerc and Norris and finish P2
As always, autosports expectations are head numbingly low!!!!!
DANIEL TO NOT HIT OSCAR UNTIL STROLL RAMMED INTO HIM!!!!!!
How is Checo to blame for the safety car helping lando and leclerc get back infront of him?
The painted grass was already dead.
Sad it was made exciting by lack of racing, by which I mean VSC, safety cars. Then tyres. Really getting boring. What different pit stop strategy? These for the majority were the same due to the safety car! They started out being different but became aligned.
The tyres are becoming an even bigger part of the race than ever.
Conclusion, RBR and Max miles ahead again per usual. Cars that were thought to be next best weren’t! Ferrari. McLaren better than expected. And no one knows why😂😂😂
Max is absolutely brilliant. Being in the fastest car with absolutely no one to challenge him makes him so good. No other driver can do that.
aaaah look at you, still being hurt and trying to cope with it. how cute.
I am getting the Nyck de Vries DTS "I am more experienced" vibes from Daniel.
These Reviews need a lot more video footage instead of just having multiple talking heads].
Would be nice but they don't have the rights to track footage. Even if they did they would only have them for their region like Sky and therefore have to restrict video to UK for example.
Then have everyone outside UK complaining at them for restricting it, on twitter or in their other video comments.
This should be understood by now.
This is what has made me 'fall in love' with Autosport, in that your journalists are not bound to a Liberty Media payroll pressure, telling these races as they are. F1 has turned boring, since 2022, moving increasingly into that anti-climactic atmosphere, where fans like me, who followed F1 since 1967/1968. Without Safety Cars regrouping the fans into an atmosphere of potential rehaul, we would probably not complete visualizing these races that organizational greed and ill-spirited race regulations have taken the F1 we use to know, from Legend to Hell!
Imola will be interesting because Ferrari have a big upgrade planned for their home race. And Stroll is an idiot. Blaming Daniel while it was his own fault. If not for daddy's money and owning the team no one would contract this mediocre driver.
Breaking News!!! The FIA and F1 have announced that Max Verstappen will be banned from the next race due to the fact he was caught knitting a sweater while leading at the Chinese Grand Prix. 🤪
Dorris is a wasted talent at McLaren , hes the 21st century version of Jenson button
I knew there was a race on today, I watched it 5 minutes anyway before I fell asleep🤔🤣
Rosberg didn't say Max is becoming the 5ht best driver, he told he allready belongs to the top5... But hey what do you expect from these british toxic biased reporters. Anything to undermine Verstappen!
Honestly this is no longer interesting and fun, if it wasn't for the safety car we would have lapped probably everyone but the top 3 or 4, seriously something has to be done in order for this sport to be comeptitive, apart from the fact the the cars are too heavy and sound afwul
He wouldn't because he pulls out 15 seconds then cruises...
Have you actually watched the race?
@@RoysIdea yes I watch every race, and even though I know what the outcome will be, and I say to my self I will stop watching soon but still I love this sport and therefore I want to be extremely competitive, this race except for the sprint qualifying it sucked, ( btw I've been watching F1 since 2001 without missing)
Nothing exciting about this race, unless you're a redbull fan (and maybe mclaren)..
Are these brits working for f1/sky as well?
If you don't like their opinions, watch someone else. Stop with this British bias, accusations when you don't agree with their views.
Especially since lot of the English based coverage has be builtup over the years due to the UK audience paying for it overtime, via magazine purchases or television rights and now everyone gets to access to this coverage for free on CZcams.
@jirwin32
If you don't like them being criticised, then don't reply and go play in traffic.
If they're posting this stuff on CZcams, then that means they're trying to reach a world wide audience, not just the brits.
What’s funny is that you actually think F1/sky be bias towards Max lol. It’s actually the opposite and they all have hard ons for Lewis. Don’t know what world you’ve been living in. F1 podcast has Damon Hill, who systematically skips every single episode after a Max win, that’s how Petty he is. Listen to these guys give Lewis a pass for horrible Quali and mediocre race, and then rag on Checo for getting screwed by a safety car.
Boring again!
Sports becoming dull as dishwater, boring predictable races every two weeks.
