  • This is Viltrox latest edition to their mirrorless lens lineup and its a good one. The 75mm f1.2 Pro. If its good enough to out value their own 85mm is debatable. I know the Fuji Fanboy Online Militia dont like these kind of videos. But remember, just because this lens is nice doesn’t make your Fujinon worse.

This lens hits a sweet spot, where the 75 mm is not as wide as the 56 mm, and not as restrictive as a 90 mm native options, so I would say perfect for my use case. Pairing this with the Fuji 35 1.4 and Sigma 16 1.4, the holy trinity of Fast Fuji is complete. I would comfortably look at this combo (along with the Sigma 18-50 [or Fuji 16 55] and Fuji 55-200 Zooms, of course) as the one size fits all solution for event and wedding photography gigs as well travel photography etc :)

Thanks for taking an early look at this lens. I photograph a lot of stage performances, so I'm interested in it for those occasions where I need something longer than my Fuji 56/1.2 but faster than my 90/2 (you might be surprised at how often such situations arise in theaters!) I wish you had given some thoughts on color fringing, and on flare when shooting into the light, but maybe after the public release (Dec. 26?) there will be some more reviews covering such details.

I think its interesting of you Mattias to compare the value and necessity of this lens compared to its cheaper 85mm brother (which I own it), I imagine that for most people who shoot portraits, f stop is the first number that they look at and its hard in my experience shopping to turn down better performance if I know the better option is within $100 bucks or so. But I agree that in relative terms these lens are almost too similar for one smaller third party to make and not hurt there own sales

Viltrox and others do an impressive job with Fujifilm. Any mild variances in colour and contrast seem really noticeable on a Fuji, since their style is so intense, and these third party manifacturers still thread the needle pretty well.
There are even Fujifilm lenses I won't buy for my Fujifilm because they have a totally different look to the others I have, and I don't want to constantly correct the inconsistencies in post. Switching from the 50f2 to the 35f1.4 drove me nuts trying to match skin tone and hues. I think if I was to start again with what I know now, I'd probably just get an X100 and call it a day, only to realise I should have bought a Ricoh GR instead. 😂

Options are always welcome from third parties, would be nice to see some APS-C primes for the Canon R7 since they'll never make any...oh wait. I really wish Fuji didn't give me a headache when using electronic lenses (the aperture ticking back down after focusing where it opens fully then ticks back to set aperture gives me a migraine with the flicker), I like the overall aesthetic of the X-E3/4, X-T20/T30, and X-T2/T3/T5. I would get a z fc, but I'll probably never get another Nikon after they basically stole my trade-in gear by receiving it with the tracking label confirming being signed for, then never contacting me again outside of support emails. Even then they never gave me an adjusted quote, nor a refund/credit for the trade-in. They took the gear and eventually support just ghosted me. Thankfully my bank took my side seeing it as a scam and did a chargeback on the order. I have since sold all of my Nikon gear, the 1/5 star rating they have with the Better Business Bureau is 1 star too much IMO.
Ah well, I'm happy with my Panasonic MFT gear and Sigma fp L I got second hand with next to no use. The color I get out of the fp handles what I miss from Fuji while I had it. The only 2 complaints I've shared with reviews have been a factory tilt screen would be nice and a built in or less expensive and better integrated (sensor for swapping) evf solution. Everything else I've either been able to get around easily or haven't encountered.

Focal length is a simple, measurable property of the lens itself, so 85mm is 85mm no matter what camera it's on (or even if it's on no camera - Grandma's reading glasses have a focal length that can be measured.) The only thing that changes from one camera format to another is the angle of view - on a Fujifilm camera, a 75mm lens will cover 17.9 degrees on the long side, while an 85mm will cover 15.8 degrees. So if you can live with 2 degrees wider coverage to get a maximum aperture 1 full f/stop larger, the 75 might be a better fit for you than the 85. Incidentally, if (for example) you're shooting a head-and-shoulder portrait with a subject height of 1 meter, the difference in shooting distance between 75mm and 85mm will be about what you could achieve by shifting your weight from your front foot to your back foot or vice-versa… it's only about 40cm difference!

f/1.4 is already a huge leap from f/1.8, let alone the f/1.2

There is nothing weird about that all. I’m a photographer, not a lens comparer.
